What a James Shields Trade Could Look Like

Hedges was #23 by Baseball Prospectus.  #51 by MLB.com, and unranked by BA (dropping him from #27 the previous year to completely out of their top 100).

Not sure what that means.  The fact that the Padres have utilized him as a sparingly-used backup this year, after only a month of AAA time, suggests they're not super-high on him either.

Sounds like he's their version of Kohl Stewart.  So here's the question... would you swap the too straight up?  Granted there are differences with the level they are at.  I might.  I'd have to think about it though.

Twins traded zero players to get him, did not already have 6-8 SP on the roster......indeed, they signed him to one of the biggest FA deals ever. I think Morris is more comparable to Price or Greinke this year......not to trading for Shields.

I would not be opposed to signing an elite player to an elite deal*

I think Morris has no contemporary comparable as the Twins only had him for one year.  At the time it was infuriating when he left but we weren't as wise about pitching declines back then.  He was almost exactly league average in 1992 and then completely collapsed in 1993.

Start the young guys.  All of them.

Or, he's only 22 years old and in the major leagues, and the Padres are utilizing him as a defense specialist and breaking him in slowly at bat.

That would be really unusual usage. This isn't getting his feet wet as a backup for month, he has been in the role for almost 5 months now, after only a month at AAA.

I can't think of any modern day top prospects deployed in that manner. They are using him like a Rule 5 pick.

Conversely, teams don't usually spend a roster spot on a 22 year old if they aren't pretty high on him. Super-high, I don't know. :)

Not that this really matters but, according to mlb.com, here are Austin Hedges' defensive tools:

Arm: 65/80

Fielding: 65/80

And Stuart Turner's:

Arm: 60/80

Fielding: 60/80

Just something to think about...
