Pete Rose Bet On Baseball... As A Player

Tuba....you including those that used greenies in the 50s-70s? Or spitballers? Or bat corkers?

Many PED users did so when, you know, there were no rules against it.

And yes, imo, betting on the game is about 1000000000x worse. YMMV, of course.

I haven't followed the Pete Rose saga much. I don't see why he can't be considered for the HOF for betting on baseball; while PEDs users, who actually cheated at baseball, are at least considered eligible?

Rose bet on the team he was managing and playing for. He was in a position to influence the outcome of the game. Pete commits a timely error, run scores, team loses, Rose wins. Rose was also in debt to people who had a vested interest in Pete influencing the outcome of games, because they did their own betting. Pete probably valued his continued health more than he valued his team winning.

Finally, Rose's story has changed after every lie was revealed. Rose never came clean regarding the extent of his gambling, even after multiple lies were exposed.

In addition to what Blake posted, the rule against players betting on baseball games has been in effect since the 1919 Black Sox scandel.

The other thing he would do to trigger an argument with them was to discuss why figure skating was not a sport - but that is an entirely different topic...

Yet so true.  Not a big fan of sports whose outcome is largely subjective.

Pete Rose was one of the most prodigious hitters in baseball history, was an icon during his era, and easily a HOFer outside of these issues.  People talk about it because it's a really unique situation.

This is very true, but he also crossed a line he had no business crossing.  We often forget that baseball nearly died due to the WhiteSox throwing a World Series.  That's why baseball has this stance on gambling, and I'm fine with it.

My big complaint about all of this is that Pete Rose has not truly been kicked out of baseball.  He'll be involved in the festivities for the ASG next month and has routinely been involved with MLB related items.  If he's banned from baseball, he should be banned from MLB baseball, not this half hearted thing where he's allowed to show up where it's convenient or even lucrative for him to show up, but not allowed in the hall.  He got kicked out, so leave him out.

Rose is in the Hall.  I was just there.  He's in at least three different places in the Hall. Just because he doesn't have a plaque in one room of the building doesn't mean his playing career isn't remembered.

At this point I'm wondering when we'll see photos of Pete Rose in bed with farm animals. But it's okay, they're all FDA approved!
