fangraphs 5 prospect for 2015

McDaniel has a series at fangraphs where he looks at 5 prospects posed to help this year - not necessarily the teams best 5 prospects, although for the Twins it's close.

http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/top-5-prospects-for-2015-minnesota-twins/

"In a Nutshell: The Twins have one of the best minor league systems in baseball and the majority of the upper-level talent should reach The Show in 2015 — significantly improving the big league product. Impressively, Minnesota has high ceiling talent both in the field and on the mound."

I'd have probably focused on a couple relievers.  I don't expect to see Berrios at all except for maybe September.  Ditto for Buxton.  Polanco perhaps in an injury callup type situation.

Trevor Plouffe has been competent at the hot corner for the past few seasons but he’s really only been above replacement level for one season out of the past four

Wrong.  He even links to the Trevor Plouffe's fangraph's page that has his positive WAR (aka being above replacement level) in the last 3 seasons.

I bet that the guy has seen less than 2 Twins' games last season other than maybe games that involved his team and I bet he has never seen any of the 5 prospects he mentioned play a game in person.  Cookie cutter garbage like this are just not worthy.  Sorry.

And Berrios has about as many chances of making the Twins in 2015 as you and I.  Really hate what those websites do with teams they do not know (or care to know.)  I wish fangraphs outsourced this to someone like Seth, the same way BA outsourced the Twins' list to Mike Berardino.  What they do is the equivalent of anyone here trying to do the same thing for the Rockies or Diamondbacks or something.  Meaningless derivative junk.  Sorry.

Yeah, that's a good point. I haven't looked at his other lists yet so I'm not sure how often he suggests relievers but guys like Graham and Burdi might have a bigger impact this year than Polanco.

'The rankings take into consideration a mixture of ceiling, readiness and potential playing time allocation'

That's not saying he expects them to make the majors this year. Doesn't mean that even if some reliever prospects not mentioned have a better shot to make the majors (potential playing time) they would overcome the five players he mentioned when taking into account ceiling and readiness. Remember he's taking into account all three areas.

About Berrios he wrote: 'With the Twins’ pitching depth, it’s possible that the young hurler could begin his big league career in the bullpen and he would have high-leverage potential in that role.' He doesn't say that will be THIS year.

And since this is a Rotograph article, maybe his comment had to do with just looking into Plouffe's offense (since fantasy baseball doesn't usually include defense which is part of WAR) compared to actual major leaguers.  Not to mention that .03 and .05 WARs are so barely above replacement level might as well be replacement level. WAR puts players into categories and players with .03 and .05 WAR would more likely be grouped with replacement level than any other category. 0-1 WAR is the scrub category.

Good point. He probably meant to say above "MLB regular" level, which is widely accepted to be around 2 WAR. But yeah, agree, overall this wasn't that enlightening a piece.

"Positive" WAR totals of 0.3 and 0.5, in 450-500 PA seasons, do not make a player definitively above replacement. His point is very much correct by fWAR.
