Who Replaces Wallner As He Goes to the IL?

Twins Video

Wallner is going on the IL today with hamstring tightness, assumedly retroactive a day. Who comes up? This decision is a little more complicated than usual because Austin Martin is on the minor league IL, we can't make Castro an OF because we don't have enough left side infielders unless Correa can play, and Larnach isn't running well. Add to that you look at the statistics for the St. Paul Saints and the only three players were really hitting much are Carson McCusker, Ryan Fitzgerald, and Luke Keaschall. McCausker has only had 145 PAs (132 ABs) at AAA between last year and this year, going 38-132 (.288), with 8 HRS, 13 RBI, 48 SOs (33.1%!), and 13 BBs (9%). He's also 6'8", 250 lbs., so I'm guessing not a speed merchant. Good average and OPS, some but not exceptional power, high strikeout rate. Keaschall is in his first year at AAA with a slash line of.261/.379/.348 (.727), and coming off Tommy John surgery so is limited in the field. Good on-base guy, not much power, uncertain defensive home, not an outfielder. Ryan Fitzgerald is hitting with a .882 OPS and can play SS, but he is 30, not really a prospect because of his age and prior performance, and also not outfielder. Emma is not really hitting much at AAA - .704 OPS wiht no HRs and 6 RBIs in 45 ABs. This also Jefferson Morales who placed some outfield, but he's really a catcher and is sitting.238/.304/.405 (.709) so he's not really setting the world on fire.

So what do you do? I would call up Keaschall, put some combination of Bader, Keirsey, and Larnach in the corner OF every day, and have Keaschall play 2B some and DH some. I'm banking on Correa being able to play so he and Lee are the primary left side of the infield, with Castro an occasional fill in and also available as the fifth outfielder.  Frankly, it's not ideal. It would be better Martin was available, but he's not. By the way, I wouldn't be upset if they combined this with bringing up Fitzgerald to have some infield coverage at SS and 3B while sending down Gaspar.

What do you guys think we should do?

Keaschall has only played 7 games defensively this season, all at 2B.  As long as Julien and Gasper are around, this would not be a move that helps cover this team's defensive needs.

Jonah Bride has been acquired via trade with the Marlins for cash considerations.  He is primarily a 3B but also has MLB experience at 2B and 1B.

Miami DFA'd him after his 4 for 40 start to the season.   Yup, he should fit right in on this team.

Castro came out of the game today due to an injury.  Correa did come in defensively and turned a nifty double play but did not have his lineup spot come up to the plate.

If you have mlb.com subscription AND the time, watch a couple of St. Paul Saints games via milb.com

. Carson McCusker is a late developing player. He is a bigger version of Wallner. He has more power than Wallner, hits the ball consistently harder, is just as fast, is the same or better in the outfield, and has a good arm albeit not as strong as Wallner's arm. He lacks experience but is far and away the best player for the Saints at this time. If the Twins need a shortstop, they could use the Saints guy. He is slick in the field.

Both Luke Keaschall and Emmanuel Rodriguez are off to rough starts. Each has a number of bleeders, broken bat, and infield hits. They are going to be fine but are off balance and out of sync at this moment.

I have watched parts of most Saints games. missed a couple. Life in the frozen north, retired, and waiting to start summer projects - so I watch too much baseball. If I lived in Los Angeles i would go to a number of  high school and college games every week. Last year I was in Las Vegas at a friend's house and went to 3-4 games a week for a month. Always better to be outside.

Martin being hurt is terrible timing. He was the Saints best hitter. We really could have used another spark plug at the top of our lineup. Adding Martin to a lineup with Buxton, Bader, Castro and Keirsey really starts to look like a much more speedy athletic team, which is what we needed.

I agree on calling up Luke Keaschall.  Have him platoon part of the time in the corner OF spots and then the rest of his time at either 2nd base or DH.  Long term he belongs at DH or 2nd and will be a much better option than Julien or Gasper so the sooner they get him up to the bigs the better.

While having Martin available would be helpful short term, I'm not a fan of his play.

I would personally like to see Emmanuel Rodriguez get a shot. He needs to improve his hitting against lefties, but we thought the same thing with Wallner, and he seems to be figuring it out. Rodriguez is a manageable fielder with plus speed.

Also, Luke Keaschall should be called up. Move Lee to 2nd, Keaschall and Julien to 2nd, and another player worth watching temporarily would be Ryan Fitzgerald, who's with the Saints. He plays SS and is an average hitter. I think the Twins would have called him up already if they wanted him; he's also not on the 40-man roster.

Just saw in the Athletic that Keaschall has been called up. No corresponding move yet announced.

Hey, you made a great call!  I believe this corresponds exactly to Wallner's IL placement which opened up a spot on the 26 man roster.

Highly doubt he will play the OF. Still recovering from surgery last year and just this week played his first full game at 2B (not one play in the OF this year). Lots of DH and 2B.
