NIck Gordon Sent to AAA - Is He a Long Term Player?

Twins Video

I see Nick Gordon has been sent down and Refsnyder brought up. I understand the logic; Gordon has been hitting around .200 with no walks or power for the last month and Refsnyder was hot earlier before he got hurt. We're evaluating both for 2022.

My question is what does everyone see for Gordon going forward? Given his play this year, do you think the Twins need to keep him on the 40 man roster or could He survive the Rule 5 draft? Do you see a long term future for him with the Twins? We could use the 40 man spot but I am concerned about losing him in the draft since he would be easy for a losing team to stash for a season.

Keeping Simmons on this roster and sending Gordon down makes zero sense. None.

I want to agree with you and I'm not a fan of Simmons, but Gordon cannot play shortstop and Simmons can which means the move makes sense to see if Gordon can hit and play defense at other positions in AAA. Nick Gordon has had a tough go the past few years and he doesn't project to be more than a mediocre utility player at this point. Gordon and Tyler Jay were tough picks. Maybe the time in AAA will help Gordon find another gear.

Because Arraez gets the yips very often.

Polanco's fielding percentage is almost always among the worst in MLB... Arraez, on the other hand is almost always average.

Absolutely true. Gordon, who has primarily played shortstop every single year of his professional MiLB career (including this one)  can clearly not play shortstop. We know this because even though Gordon has the arm strength, quickness, reaction time and range to play shortstop, somebody on the internet wrote Gordon can't stick there one time. Thus... the book is closed. It's just the strangest thing the Twins keep having Gordon play SS almost exclusively... every year for 7 years now.

Gordon's error rate has been bad at SS. Very bad. Gordon cannot play any defensive position with a bad error rate because he doesn't have the bat to make up for it (unlike Polanco). It'd be nice to see his skills at the MLB level rather than hear about his issues from an internet "scout."

I have seen Gordon play. I'm not being a harsh judge of him. The Twins will play whomever they decide to play. I will agree with your underlying question of why Gordon was used at shortstop for years but never given a real shot to show any skills at the MLB level.

The post concerned his viability as a long term option and there are doubts about his future right now. The opinions on Twins Daily carry zero weight but his managers at AAA and MLB have a voice. You sound bitter about Gordon's opportunities right now and this will play out far away from our field.

I am annoyed. I've seen the Twins waste talent and jerk players around back and forth for years before figuring out what they had by sheer luck or only discovering it after they leave through rule 5 picks. It's a poor way to run a franchise IMO.

Understandable. I was really eager to see Nick Anderson and then .... poof, he was gone. However, this is the fate of a fan. I played for way too many years and just enjoy the game and all of the little stuff. When looking over players and guessing who will still be around it is only my thoughts and I am aware that management may not like some aspect of a player; we have to live with that. Don't let management ruin your enjoyment of the game of baseball, but know you will be ticked at how things are run by the corporations. Baseball is still fun for me and good entertainment.

I saw enough of Nick Gordon. He has no power, he chases to many pitches. He isn’t a big league SS.

i guess I look at him as compare him to Astudillo.  Look how he has bounced up and down for 3 seasons.  When you don’t play good defense don’t have much plate discipline and not much power. Your probe to slumps at the plate and unable to help the team.  Then take that Astudillo has elite contact skills, can catch, play 3b 1B LF RF. Has shown some power and still is 27 or 28th man.

Nick Gordon doesn’t do any thing elite, he doesn’t play good defense anywhere he doesn’t put the ball in play enough and when he does he doesn’t make hard contact.

right now he is a 2B with decent speed who can fill in CF or SS in a pinch.

I agree with the gentleman questioning why Simmons is taking up so much playing time.  He should have been traded.  I like Gordon, I think he's a serviceable MLB player.  But Twins probably ruined his career.  A few times they brought him up only to sit on the bench for a week and never even get an at bat.  Twins have plenty of stiffs they could unload off the 40 man roster.  Hello Cave.  Oh and you Gordon haters Remember he was a highly touted hyped prospect that's been relegated to a bench player at best.  Remember not all can't miss prospects are MLB players.  Hopefully the highly touted players we got in trades fare better than Gordon

Who plays where?

We all like Arraez in the lineup, often leading off. He works the count. Gets on base. But we hate him at second, Donaldson is better at third, and he just isn't the hitter we want in right or left (not that Kepler and Larnach are making us happy.)

We all hate Polanco at shortstop. Yet if we don't have Simmons, who do we have at short - Polanco. At least until the arrival of Martin & Lewis, and then we have to wonder who will actually play where and when. At what point do those guys make us not feel bad if Buxton walks.

Since this is about Gordon, is he just a solid utility guy, for at least another season? Can he play 2B/SS/3B/OF as necessary? If so, his speed is good, but is he a better bet than Astudillo? Is he more valuable than Jake Cave? Should Cave be repalced next season by the older Refsnyder? Is there any reason Cave, Garlick, Refsnyder should be kept on the 40-man, considering as long as we have Sano, Kirillof will be playing the outfield, or playing 1B/DH with Sano, Garver and maybe Rooker. Is Rooker long for the Twins in the off-season?

If the Twins don't resign Cruz, then I picture Garver/Sano will be the primary DH with a little bit of Rooker in the mix. Which means Garver will also be the third catcher a la Astudillo, with Rortvedt coming up fulltime to spell Jeffers.

Man, in some ways I'm tired of all this positions shuffling. The other night Garver at first, Astudillo at second, someone at short, Sano at third. An outfield of Larnach, Refsnyder, Rooker?

Who's anywhere?

But the Twins will go into the off-season before making final 40-man decisions with Cave, Refsnyder, Gordon, Rooker and possibly Astudillo. They have a few people to add because of Rule 5, Lewis the top one - Enlow, Sands, Villamont, Winder, Sisk are all at AA so not as appetizing. They have Javier, Weil, Watson, Moran, Miranda, Lujan and Wells, Maciel, Cabbage, Bray, Ryan, Caleb and Ian Hamilton, Vasquez all approaching (I believe) minor league free agency. Who will go, who will walk away, who might stay will be the question.
