Twins Minor League Report (6/5): Explosive Kernels

We are only a couple days away from getting a new influx of talent into the Twins minor league system. The MLB First Year Player Draft will start on Friday night and the Twins have the fourth overall selection. It will be the second year in a row that the Twins are picking in the top five picks.   Last year's first round selection, Byron Buxton, has been a great addition to the organization. By the end of this year, he could be the top ranked prospect in all of baseball. Last week, Seth Stohs mo

The team has played all right -- about what I expected, given difficulty of replacing guys like Aaron Hicks, Chris Herrma

25 Minnesota Twins Drafts in 25 Days: 2012

Originally posted at Kevin Slowey was Framed! I have reached the end of my journey. Although we've come to the end of the road, still I can't let you go, Twins' drafts. It's unnatural. As such, I wanted to thank everyone for the positive feedback and for simply reading these recaps. I really enjoyed the research and I really enjoyed sharing what I found. I also appreciate the support from Twins Daily and their willingness to put these on the Front Page. I think the proudest moment I have h

Performance Enhancing Drugs and the MLB

With all the recent developments in the latest PED scandal, it remains to be seen which players (if any) will receive suspensions and how those penalties may or may not impact the Minnesota Twins.   While MLB is busy trying to procure documents, names and testimonies from now-defunct Biogenesis and its shady former owner Tony Bosch, countless athletes such as Ryan Braun and Alex Rodriguez are once again finding their names in the headlines for suspicion of using performance-enhancing drugs.

Update on 10 minor leaguers to watch

In judging my ability to note appropriate "minor" minor leaguers to watch, the first update must address the fundamental question: are these guys still worthy of keeping an eye on. I think the answer for each is yes, though I am starting to be concerned about a couple of these guys. With that, here is the update:   Dereck Rodriguez (EST, E-Town or CR): Dereck is likely going to be in E-Town as soon as that season starts.   J.D. Williams (CR): J.D. is in a slump at the moment but he has had a str

What's the point of Clete Thomas?

Earlier this week, the Twins made a roster move to bring in some center field help for Aaron Hicks. For most of the season, the club has been without a back-up center fielder because Darin Mastroianni has been dealing with a nagging ankle injury. Even last week, Chris Parmelee had to play a defensive inning in center field in the late portion of a game. The Twins need a back-up center fielder and Thomas was one of the few options.   When Hicks was struggling at the beginning of the season, Thoma

2013 Draft Class Could Lead 2014 Kernels

I've never been someone that pays an enormous amount of attention to the MLB First-Year Player Draft. Most years, I would glance at a few writers focusing on who the Twins might draft in the first round, but the draft itself just held little interest for me.   I suppose, like many people, it just seemed to me that it was going to be several years before I would ever see any of the young players drafted in a given year put on a Twins uniform, so there was little point in spending much of m

He was a reliever throughout his early minor league career, did very well, and made the majors for the first time in September of 1999. He bounced back and forth between the majors and AAA for the next two seasons, mostly u

Wha Happened? #7 (Red Sox, Braves, Tigers, Brewers, Brewers, Mariners)

There was agony during the last two weeks of Twins baseball (including 7 straight losses to run a losing streak to 10) and ecstasy (including winning 6 of their last 7). The season continues tonight in Kansas City, but before you see that game, let's review what happened in the last few weeks. Game 40 Red Sox 3 - Twins 2 Remember about a month ago, when we went into Boston and dominated the Red Sox to win 3 of 4? Turns out they didn't like that very much. And brought a rather curt "Don't Mess Wi

Twins Birthdays--June 3

Sorry, I was gone yesterday. We'll have today's birthdays later today.   Ron Keller (1943) Jim Dwyer (1950) Nelson Liriano (1964)   Right-hander Ronald Lee Keller made nine total appearances with the Twins in 1966 and 1968. He was born in Indianapolis and attended Indiana University. The Twins drafted him in the eighth round in 1965. After a strong year at Class A St. Cloud in 1965, he started 1966 in at Class A Wilson, was promoted after seven starts to AA Charlotte, was promoted after seve

Swing's the Thing: Twins versus Mariners (Games 51-53)

Twins versus Mariners   No Big Deal (Game 51)   The ball game was relegated to nothing more than background noise. The goose-egg on the Twins’ side of the scoreboard did little to lure me back in.   With baseball refusing to signal the beginning of weekend joy. My conversation with my friend turned to ghost stories and hard luck tales. I even dug out the flashlight for that special campfire vibe.   And so it’s like this: Baseball is apple pie, and when people are done with their slice they retur
