Twins Gaining In Arizona Fall League

The Major League Baseball Arizona Fall League kicks off and with it, a handful of Twins prospects continue their development. Now playing in games against some of the most talented prospects in minor league baseball, they will be given another measuring stick opportunity. Competition regarded as higher than most of what is faced in a typical minor league game, the "All Star" rosters of sorts go at it.   For the Twins this season, seven players have been asked to compete for the Scottsdale Scorpi

Challenges Await Gardenhire Out West

Following the 2014 Major League Baseball season, Ron Gardenhire was removed from his duties as manager of the Minnesota Twins. Following a fourth straight 90 loss campaign, management decided a change was necessary. Paul Molitor was brought in, Gardy was given a humidor, and that was that. Over the course of this season though, it's became apparent Gardenhire has the itch again, and he may be back in the dugout as soon as 2016.   During the season, and while reports flooded from Detroit suggesti

The Case for the Joe Mauer Contract

I wanted to stay in a Twins uniform, and I want to win. And we’re definitely headed in the right direction. — Joe Mauer after signing an eight-year, $184 million contract in 2010   All of the vitriol aimed at Joe Mauer right now would have been directed, ten-fold, at Twins management if they had not retained him in 2010. Minnesota had just opened a new publicly-subsidized park, they were coming off a year in which they had won the AL Central and Mauer was named MVP. He was an anomaly: a defensiv

Through the Fence: End of Instructs 10/9-10/10 The Rise of Flash Jr.

Once again, the Twins and Red Sox took to the diamonds for Instructional League ball. Yet there was a new giddiness in the air as the League is done as of Tuesday and a good deal of these players will head home for the winter. Everyone already has their plans set and everyone has something different in store. Still for now there was baseball to be played and talent to be evaluated. This weekend the Twins front office were visible in the stands with GM Terry Ryan, Special Assistant Bill Smith, Sc

Rise And Fall: The Twins Youth

The 2015 Minnesota Twins were an exceptional story and breathed life back into baseball fans throughout Twins Territory. From veteran contributions, to rookie additions, Paul Molitor's club had it all. In the year of the rookie, the Twins did their part promoting a handful of youngsters. It's going to be that core, that carries the Twins will into the future.   While Miguel Sano and Eddie Rosario were the young names that highlighted the Twins 25 man roster, it's been noted for a while that the

Winning Season Raises Expectations for Inexperienced, Inconsistent Minnesota Twins

I’m coming here to win. I think that it’s very important to lay that out there, right from the start. Things can change in this game very dramatically at this level. — Paul Molitor at the press conference in November, announcing his hiring as Twins manager   It might have sounded corny last winter when I talked about 70-92 and the fine line of being able to at least cut that in half by winning 10 more games or whatever it is. There was enough signs there for me to think that it could happen. — M

For Twins, Future May Mirror Cubs

The Twins Way, it's a moniker that has been thrown around Twins Territory for years. Often synonymous with feelings of angst, disgust, or displeasure, the Twins Way is more mocked than it is celebrated. Whether it exists or not, the Twins Way may be more in line with the current trajectory of another franchise than it is given credit for. That other franchise won 97 games in 2015, and plays in the National League Wild Card game this season.   That other franchise, the Chicago Cubs.   Back in the

How about Cuban free agent Eddy Julio Martinez ?

Just a few days ago, it was reported that the Giants had agreed to terms with highly touted Cuban CF Eddy Julio Martinez. There's a lot of oddities to the saga, like this from MLB Rumors:   "One of the most talked-about and highly ranked free agents earlier in the summer, Martinez curiously went months with his name scarcely coming up in news and rumors before the agreement with the Giants was reported."   The signing bonus was supposed to reach $10M. The Giants supposedly signed him for $2.5

Off-Season Decisions

After the back-slapping is done at Twins Way, the general manager should have time to take a long, hard look at the season that just played out. The Twins won 83 games and were competitive. The season was highlighted by one fine month (May) and a pluckiness that kept them from sinking too far when times got tough. The Twins pitching improved more than their metrics indicated while offensively the team scored more runs than their numbers indicated.   The Twins scored 695 runs, while the league av

Passing The Grade: The Twins Breakdown

In 2015, the Minnesota Twins exceeding expectations by an immense amount. Expected by man to once again finish at the bottom of the AL Central and hope to stave off 90 losses, first year manager Paul Molitor had his club doing anything but. While ultimately the club came up just shorty of the playoffs, it was a season of much more good than bad.   Going into 2016, the year in which the Twins should begin to be a serious contender once again, understanding who contributed most is important. Not enough at the end, but the Twins had a great 2015

It's over. The book has closed on the 2015 season for the Minnesota Twins. What a ride it was.   Coming into the last week of the season, the Twins had seven games left. Many thought they needed five or six wins to capture the second AL wild card spot, or even just to tie either the Astros or Angels. The Twins ended up with three wins, all in Cleveland and the last one was a comeback victory in the late innings.   Torii Hunter and the Twins addressing fans Sunday.   They came home still in it,

WARNE: A Eulogy for the 2015 Minnesota Twins

Surprises are great. They crop up when you least expect them and can frequently be a harbinger of the days to come.   And if the 2015 season is any indicator, things are about to be a lot more fun in Twins Territory.   This season was dotted with debuts of players that fans have been awaiting for years. First Eddie Rosario, then Miguel Sano, Byron Buxton, even Tyler Duffey and finally Max Kepler. Even without the highly-anticipated debut of Jose Berrios — no doubt not far down the road — the Twi

Through the Fence: Instructional League 10/2-10/3 Gonsalves, Gordon, Walker and Reed

It was another beautiful weekend for baseball in sunny Southwest Florida. The baseball gods were smiling down as there was a rematch of last weekends pitching prospect phenoms of Stephen Gonsalves of the Twins vs 17 year old wunderkid Anderson Espinoza. Before the matchup, I got a little video of Gonsalves warming up in the bullpen where he appeared a little wild. After his two innings of pitching, where he showed off his plus changeup that upticked his 90-92 mph fast and the feel of a good curv

Your 2016 Twins (no-trades edition)

The Twins will enter 2016 after recording their best record since 2010. They have added several young players, most of whom are here to stay. As of today, they have some gaps, but overall have a decent team returning for next year. Four players are slated to be free agents--Mike Pelfrey, Torii Hunter, Brian Duensing, and Neal Cotts. Perhaps a player or two will be non-tendered. Candidates would be Casey Fien, Eduardo Nuñez, and Blane Boyer.   Here is my current projection for the Opening Day 201

The Unfortunate Half Of It- Dozier and Perk Do It Again

By all respective measures, the Minnesota Twins 2015 season has come to an end. Despite a very exciting month of September, and a Wild Card playoff chase that gave Twins Territorians something to tune into, Paul Molitor's squad has reached the end. While 2015 is no doubt a resounding success given the expectations, it remains 2016 that is Minnesota's goal. Unfortunately, two massive question marks remain.   Going into 2016, the Twins roster will prominently feature a handful of high ceiling and

You can hang this one on Molitor

How can a guy that knows baseball so well, be so ignorant? Brings Perkins in to face Zobrist a right handed hitter who owns Perkins, result? Base hit of course, Perkins then surrenders another hit..3-1 Royals, Molitor did this same thing against Detroit, brought Perkins in to face Martinez, forcing Martinez to hit from the right side where he was hitting over 500, result hit off the wall, how could you be so ignorant?

Duffey Puts A Bow On Impressive Debut

2015 was supposed to be and has been the year of the prospect for the Minnesota Twins. Eddie Rosario, Alex Meyer, Miguel Sano, Byron Buxton, and Max Kepler have all made their big league debuts. In one of the most impressive farm systems in all of baseball, the Twins had plenty of big names to bring to Target Field. It has been Tyler Duffey however, that has been arguably the most impressive of them all.   With young pitching talents like Trevor May and Alex Meyer being highly touted, and Jose B

The Twins, Then And Now

The Twins are in the midst of a heated race for the final AL Wild Card spot, and while they are running out of games, getting to this point has been a heck of a journey. Having suffered through four straight 90 loss campaigns, being back on the positive side of things is a nice change. Winning isn't new to this franchise however, and the most interesting aspect may be just how the winning takes place.   2010 saw the Twins compile a 94-68 record under Ron Gardenhire, good enough for first in the

What if...?

Here we are in the final week of the 2015 MLB season and the Twins are still in contention for a playoff spot. All things considered, that’s pretty incredible. Virtually none of us expected this when the season began. http://knuckleballsblog.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/what-if-600x304.jpg Hoped for it? Sure. We all hope for it. We’ve hoped for it for the past four years, too, but show me someone who went on record in April that the Twins would have a .500 record locked down and still be
