Kohl Stewart Reflects on the Draft & His First Year as a Professional

The 2014 MLB First Year Amateur Player Draft is right around the corner and hundreds of high school and college ballplayers are counting the hours before the Houston Astros go on the clock with the first pick of the draft on Thursday, June 5.   One year ago, Kohl Stewart was an 18 year-old pitcher anxiously awaiting the draft. Today, Stewart, who was selected by the Minnesota Twins with the fourth overall pick of the first round, is a couple of months in to his first full year of professi

Walks Don't Haunt Phil Hughes

Phil Hughes signed during the off-season to help remedy some of Minnesota's starting pitching woes over the last two seasons. Hughes was coming off a rough final season in New York where he posted an ERA over 5.00 and his WHIP topped out at 1.46. Hughes was charged with a career high 14 losses and he probably couldn't get out of town fast enough.   "Walks Will Haunt" was the message played to taunt opposing pitchers inside the Metrodome. Apparently, Hughes has taken that message to heart as he h

A Lament: Jarod Burton

A Lament   By Percy Bysshe Shelley 1792–1822 Retold by Paul Pleiss   O world! O life! O time! On whose last steps Jarod Burton doth climb, Trembling at that where he had stood 66ft 6in before; When will return the glory of your prime? No more—Oh, never more!   Out of the day and night A joy has taken flight; Fresh spring, and summer, and winter hoar, Move my faint heart with grief, but with delight No more—Oh, never more!

Monday Morning Madness: Memorial Day 2014

Originally posted at Kevin Slowey was Framed!   Weekend Recap   The best thing I can say about the Giants series is that the Twins did not lose more games than they played. If they had done that, I would have been really upset/confused. The Twins didn't put up much of a fight this weekend, but the Giants are one of the best teams in baseball. Plus, San Francisco is windy. Wind is nature's biggest bully. I'm just glad the Twins escaped with their calculators.   Does Kyle Gibson have the Ra

Twins Minor League Report (5/25): Vargas and Berrios Continue Their Strong Months

The Minnesota Twins finished their five game road trip vs. the National League on Sunday, with a defeat at the hands of Madison Bumgarner and the San Francisco Giants to finish off a sweep. The Twins return home tomorrow to face the Texas Rangers on Memorial Day, looking to get their record on the season back to .500.   Down on the farm, the Twins affiliates received some strong pitching performances, including another one from a top prospect, on their way to a 3-1 day at the ballpark.   RED W

Twins Minor League Report (5/24): Commander Lee

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!   The Twins lost the opener against the Giants late Friday night. Game two was also a late-night affair.   The Twins return home for a four-game set against the Rangers and we can anticipate a 25-man roster that will undergo some changes between now and then. Though guys may have been deserving of getting that promotion during the week, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to fly guys completely across the country for one or two games.   Moving on to the farm…   Red Wings

Twins Minor League Report (5/23): Arcia and Willingham lead the Red Wings

The Twins fell behind early in San Francisco and could not take advantage of six walks from starter Tim Lincecum in the first six innings. Brian Dozier and Joe Mauer both had two hits at the top of the lineup but the rest of the Twins batters had a tough day against the Giants.   Down in the Minor Leagues the Twins affiliates went 2-2.     Red Wings Report Rochester 7, Scranton/WB 1 Box   Mike Pelfrey pitched five scoreless innings, walking two, and giving up four

former twin watch

It is always fun to check in with how our former players are performing. It seems like ex twins are found in bunches. Rockies have Cuddy back after being down with injury and is seeing ball well. Hawkins looks gassed after great start as tgeir closer and of course Mourneau is tearing the ball and not just at home. With Milwaukee Gomez is off pace from torrid stretch last year but still putting up numbers to envy any of our of production. Both Lohse and Garza have helped propel the crew to their

The Maturation of Trevor Plouffe

As spring training began in Twins Territory, there were questions about who should be starting at third base when the team headed north. Trevor Plouffe was coming off an underwhelming season where he dealt with some injuries and he struggled defensively at third base. Miguel Sano was ranked as one of the best prospects in the game and his powerful swing looked primed to make his debut.   Flash-forward a couple months and Sano is recovering from Tommy John surgery while Plouffe has continued to l

3 Twins Prospects Who Have Been Much Better Than Their Numbers Indicate

Here are three legitimate prospects (all are 1.7 years younger than the average player in their respective leagues, according to Baseball Reference) who, at first glance, appear to be struggling so far in 2014. A closer examination, however, tells a different story:   Taylor Rogers (AA SP)   32.2 IP in 8 GS The bad: 5.36 ERA 1.53 WHIP   [*]Why he’s better than his numbers: The obvious indicator is his 3.50 FIP, almost 2 full runs lower than his ERA; in fact, this difference is the high
