Cliff Notes to the 2014 Twins: Ch. 1 April

We know how it is. Life is busy: with work and family and social engagements, there are a lot of demands on your time. So, if you've missed some developments in the first month of the season, you're perfectly normal. Missing baseball games is not unlike missing reading assignments for school, so we're happy to provide this series of Cliff Notes to summarize, explain and analyze the story that is the 2014 Twins Season. "Chapter I: April" Summary: At the beginning of the season, the Twins are a t

Yohan Pino to help?

Ok, go ahead, call me crazy. I get it. But is it possible we're missing something here that could prove helpful?   When the Twins re-acquired Pino this off season I offered a simply "meh" like the rest of you. AAA filler who might not finish the year or even make the club if a few things break right. But with his incredible start I had to sit down and take a look at his career numbers.   He has a career 3.7 to 1 SO to BB ratio and a career BA against of .239 including this season, and a career W

Twins Minor League Report (5/3): Pino's Still Perfect

Something clearly hadn't been right with Mike Pelfrey in his recent starts and the Twins finally did something about it on Saturday morning. Pelfrey was placed on the disabled list with a left groin strain. Sam Deduno will take Pelfrey's spot in the rotation after he has continued to pitch well out of the bullpen.   Danny Santana is the man taking Pelfrey's spot on the active roster. The Twins plan to use him in a variety of roles especially since the club already has two other shortstops on the

The Twins need more Brian Doziers

Brian Dozier wasn't a high draft choice. He had a breakout minor league season in 2011 and became a prospect for the Twins mostly because of the dearth of talent at shortstop, which was then his position. Dozier was then assigned to Rochester and got a promotion to the Twins after a hot start in Triple A. Brian's rookie season was by most measures disappointing and ended with a demotion back to Rochester without a September recall.   2013 looked to be a year of decision for Dozier. He was mov

Some Samples No Longer Small: Pitchers

Sample sizes for a few ratios are becoming large enough to consider. For pitchers, strike out rate stabilizes at 70 batters faced and ground ball and fly ball rate stabilizes at 70 balls in play. By stabilizing, that doesn’t necessarily mean it is the new expected rate. It does mean that any significant changes from previous year cannot be written off to small sample size. For minor leaguers a drop or change likely coincides with a step up in classification and the necessary adjustment. It is al

Twins Minor League Report (5/2): Diamond's Redemption?

After a rough, Mother Nature influenced series, in which the Twins were forced to use every one of their pitchers in a double-header vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, they received a valiant effort from their prized off-season acquisition, Ricky Nolasco, on Friday night to stave off a catastrophic pitching predicament moving into the weekend.   Although Nolasco was able to save the bullpen with a complete game, 3-earned run effort, it wasn’t enough to save himself from taking a loss

Shortstop found, Johnson not viable...cf?

Escobar clearly took command of shortstop, will he continue to hit? Not at that rate for sure..but at least he gives you the possibility of making contact...   Kris Johnson? No Way.. Wait for Jose....   CF? I really like Fuld but History suggests...He will falter...Trade a AA prospect for established CF? I certainly wouldnt put all my eggs in The Buxton Basket

Rotation woes

One possible outcome of the come to jesus meeting with Pelfrey (as mentioned) might be to eat the salary since he sounds against both bullpen and demotion options. Frankly, I am all for it a) because it is not my money at least Nishi had the class to forego his last year of guaranteed money which the brass could apply to this contract mistake and c) how much would it cost to bring back Scott Baker?? Surely his AAA numbers bode well for AT THE MINIMUM an improvement over what Pelf has given us.

Twins Minor League Report (5/1): 8 Games in the Org

If you are a real baseball junkie, Thursday was a great day of baseball. The Twins organization played EIGHT baseball games yesterday. The Twins played two (lost both), the Red Wings played one (squandered a great pitching performance), the Rock Cats palyed two (split a double header), the Miracle played one (a lopsided loss) and then Kernels played two as well (swept both sides of a double header). With so much baseball action on Thursday, we will get right to it!   [ATTACH=CONFIG]7323[/ATTA

Episode 81: Brian Dozier is good at baseball

http://assets.podomatic.net/ts/19/ad/da/paulpleiss/1400x1400-347x347+136+0_9532106.jpg With three off days in the last week, it's been a bit of a slow week for the Twins. The Twins added Kenny Wilson who was DFA'd by the Blue Jays, Alex Meyer learned to throw a nasty change up and Eduardo Escobar seems to have taken over the SS duties from Pedro Florimon. No one in the starting rotation is very good at throwing baseballs lately. With so many off days instead of finding a hitter and pitcher of the

A Look At Chris Colabello's Season So Far

Originally posted at http://troystwinsdugout.wordpress.com/2014/04/30/a-look-at-chris-colabellos-season-so-far/   This past offseason, Chris Colabello received an offer to go overseas and play in South Korea. Instead, he decided that he'd stay here and go to spring training and see if he could be a major league player. He made the 25 man roster out of spring training and has exceeded expectations so far.   In 23 games, Colabello has batted .308/.351/.505 with 3 homeruns, 27 RBIs and 11 runs scor

Rosario Selfish and Reckless...Twins should sever ties...

Do I understand this correctly? Eddie Rosario a top prospect for the MN Twins, smoked pot KNOWING..he could be tested for illegal substances?   I wont engage in the merits or dangers of smoking MJ. However if you have the world in front of you and YOU HAVE TO SMOKE WEED...isn't is just a matter of time before your character catches up with you? I have to believe it is....   I think this shows long term weakness and once he comes back if he puts up great numbers..I urge the Twins to trade him,

Twins Headed in the Right Direction?

Future Stars: Miguel Sano and Byron Buxton. Emerging Rookie: Josmil Pinto Revelation: Chris Colabello. Starter who Finally "gets it": Trevor Plouffe. Only player to establish himself in 2013: Brian Dozier. What do all of these position players have in common? They are all right handed hitters.   Since the emergence of MVPs Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau the Twins have definitely leaned left. Perhaps not in sheer numbers, but the most feared and respected hitters were lefties. The sto
