Article: Twins 2019 Position Analysis: Third Base
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great article, Nick. All baseball with a realistic look at the situation. Sano-Buxton, Buxton-Sano, Sano-Buxton. The Twins had to count on a recovery from both to propel them to the playoffs this season. Stay tuned to see how it turns out. The really good news, however, is that with many options for a decent 4th outfielder and Gonzalez, they have given themselves solid players to fill in should either or both be injured or fail in 2019. The replacements won't have the ability to lead the drive to the playoffs, but they also won't be anchors. If Sano-Buxton fail, a lot has to go right elsewhere for the team to make the playoffs. Lets pray that isn't the case and Sano-Buxton have career seasons and the Twins play well into October! -
Article: BREAKING: Twins Flip Granite To Rangers
rdehring replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I understand that the Twins got $700,000 or $750,000 International Bonus Money from the Orioles. As I understand, it has to be used during this signing period, ie, before June 30 (or is it an earlier date?). I also recall that the Twins spent their entire allocation for the young outfielder from Venezuela (Urbana). Does anyone know if they signed any other prospects for more than the minimum (is it $5,000 or $10,000?) and are over the allocation and this trade will allow them to not have to deal with the penalty? If not already over, this will enable them to sign one or more late bloomers to contracts. Have to believe they have one or more players in mind if this is the case. Does anyone know anything about this? In any case, I really like them getting something in return for a player that had to be removed from the 40-man to make room for someone much more valuable to the team. Great maneuvering by the FO. -
Article: Twins 2019 Position Analysis: Second Base
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Arraez is a real wild card for this team. Logic said he couldn't maintain his high average when he moved to Hi-A and then AA, except he did. Can he do it two more times, going to AAA and then the Twins? Most would say no, but Arraez may not be listening to them. If he does make it and ends up hitting .320+ in the big leagues, he will be a heck of a lead-off hitter. But with Lewis/Javier the future shortstop and Polanco moving to second, where does Arraez play? Seems to me he will be the most unusual DH in baseball, batting lead off for the Twins.- 27 replies

Article: Twins 2019 Position Analysis: Second Base
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If Gordon hit a wall at AAA last summer, he hit a high hurdle at AA the previous summer. Don't know if he is wearing down the last half of the season, or what. Regardless, the second baseman of the future for the Twins is Polanco. We just don't know when that future will begin. Will it be this September? Or more likely summer 2020? Or maybe even 2021, when there could be two candidates clamoring for the job?- 27 replies

No twitter here, Seth. So will ask the old fashioned way. First, how have you been? Still juggling two jobs, TD and that window company? Also, still living up on the border? Always appreciate your work on those kids in the minors. Have a wonderful season!

Article: Twins 2019 Position Analysis: First Base
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It is always puzzling to me when reading about first base that there are several mentions of Kepler. Yes, he played some first base in the minors, but it wasn't that much...was it? But he is our best right fielder, one of the best in MLB. Yes, he does have a second position, but it is center field where he played quite a bit last year. I don't understand the constant mention of him at first base which would see someone who isn't as good as he playing right field. I say keep one of the best right fielders in the game in right field. Look for others to cover first base.- 47 replies

Article: Twins 2019 Position Analysis: Catcher
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Traveling, so not reading a lot about the Twins first weekend on the field. Thought I saw that Rortvedt saw action on both Saturday and Sunday? If he did, it's encouraging that the Twins would have him out there so soon in the spring.- 67 replies

Great move that makes the Twins a better team today than yesterday. The only move/decision that needs to be made before the end of spring training is with the 40-man roster. Don't think they will DFA a pitcher as they only have 20. So to me, its gotta be an outfielder. They will have been in camp for a week, which I suspect gives them time to decide between Granite and Reed. Granite has the edge that he has options and the likelihood that Reed makes the final 25 is slim and getting slimmer. So I suspect they will DFA Reed and try to swing a deal for some kid playing in the rookie league somewhere.

Article: Musical Chairs In The Bullpen
rdehring replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
That means that one of the last two (Hildy or Romero) are in Rochester along with guys like Duffey and the funky lefty. All four pitched for the Twins last year with Hildy and Duffey on the roster all or most of the year. If three of the four are at Rochester, one has to say that the bullpen is stronger than last year. And that is a positive step for 2019. -
There is no reason not to expect Schoop to have a good year. Maybe not 2017 good, but certainly as good as the two years before that. If he does, it would go a long way towards putting the Twins in the playoff picture. My excitement about Gordon began to wane after his second half troubles in 2017. With 2018 in AAA now behind him, he is in the 'show me' category. My expectations don't include him as a starter for the Twins...not in 2019, or beyond. Maybe he will make me change those expectations, much as Stewart has made me re-think my opinions of the last few years.
-
In answer to your question, why? We have no idea how the coaching staff intends to use this bullpen. Will they be using Romero and Mejia in extended outings every 3-4 days, pitching 2, 3 or even 4 innings? If they do, that changes the work load on the other 5-6 guys in the pen. It also means that the other top relievers will not be overworked like the past few years, thus, more effective throughout the season. Lets get into spring training and see how these guys are used and how they are doing before raising the surrender flag. Maybe Reed and Parker will be exactly what they expect them to be and the bullpen will be a strength.

Article: Twins Daily 2019 Top Prospects: #1 Royce Lewis
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Like all of us ole guys, I too have the hope to see one more championship. As for the steady approach, I see this group having a plan that is different than that of a man I hold great respect for. They seem to be more flexible in using all the tools available to them as the game is currently structured. Like you I hope, and pray, that they will get it done and not take too long in doing it.- 41 replies

Article: Twins Daily 2019 Top Prospects: #1 Royce Lewis
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes, you could. But something feels different this time, at least to me. There seems to be a continual emphasis on strengthening the system. Not just all the moves they did last July, but the continual moves that haven't made big splashes. You know, moves like bringing Pearson in last spring, and others. Seems like they have a plan and are working it. To me, that's how building a successful organization will happen. It appears to me that they also have been more successful in the past couple drafts, although I will agree we won't know for several years. It also helps to be drafting high, however, their management of the signing pool two years ago was beautiful to watch...getting Enlow and others after making the surprise pick of Lewis, who just may turn out to be the best choice of all.- 41 replies

Article: Twins Daily 2019 Top Prospects: #1 Royce Lewis
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Remembering back to those Brewers teams, Yount had a partner in Paul Molitor. Could we have some of the same with Lewis-Javier? I know lots of people have been hammering away at the new FO, but I for one like what they are doing. No, they aren't throwing gas on the fire to get it done overnight. But there is something good about a steady approach towards turning this team into one of the best in baseball...year after year after year.- 41 replies

Article: Twins Daily 2019 Top Prospects: #1 Royce Lewis
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
When thinking about this kid I keep thinking about Robin Yount also, although Yount didn't have Lewis' speed. Won't go back and look, but Yount was up when he was still 18, wasn't he? Also, Seth, love how these are presented with the 'blue style baseball card look.' Can we please fast forward to late 2020 or early 2021 when all five of these top five are playing at Target Field. Really am kind of giddy thinking about them in a Twins uniform.- 41 replies

Article: Report: Twins, Kepler Finalizing Extension
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Lets hope the Front Office sees/knows something about the type of player Max is going to be in 2019 and beyond. Getting these two on long term contracts could fill their #2 and #3 spots in the batting order for the first half of the next decade. And doing so at a reasonable cost. Now lets get Berrios and Gibson into the mix and I will be more than excited. Also curious if they are talking to Eddie, who was out best player last year and is closer to free agency. -
We won't know how it is structured until we learn the terms. Maybe it is front-loaded with a nice signing bonus this year on top of his previously agreed salary for 2019. Unless I am mistaken, I believe signing bonuses are allowed. I also will join those who believe Polanco hasn't even scratched the surface of what he can become. And his defense is adequate at shortstop until Lewis or Javier are ready and he moves to second base. What this does mean, however, if Javier is also the real deal he will likely end up at third base...sometime after Sano either moves to first base/DH.

Article: Making Sense of the Lineup Makeover
rdehring replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Excellent presentation of the Twins lineup as they begin spring training. Don't they have a team option to bring Cruz back in 2020? Also, I think the problems with one year deals last year had less to do with the length of the deal and more to the timing of when the players were signed. Lynn went into the winter thinking he was going to get richer, then waited and waited while no one gave him the offer he thought he deserved. He eventually signed with the Twins, but was really disappointed and missed most of spring training. Morrison's problems were likely more related to his injury than a one year deal.- 21 replies

Love this move and am a bit surprised they are doing it. Although this is about keeping a very good middle infielder in the fold long-term, it does affect others. Perhaps the most affected will be Gordon. His play on the field will determine future Twins moves pertaining to him. Now get Berrios signed to something similar, then Gibson to a couple years. With Kirilloff, Larnach and others on the rise, I can see them waiting another year to extend Rosario and/or Kepler.
-
The number that blows my mind is 44-doubles in a five month minor league season. Unbelievable! I think there is a good chance your ETA is wrong. If he has a year at AA anything like last year, we gotta see him by September at the latest. Could be earlier if one of the starting three is out with an injury.

Yes, incredible pictures. If he reads this, was wondering if he has seen any of the artwork by Andreas Nottebohm. Several of his photos could be Nottebohm paintings. Expect he would find Andreas' life interesting. Sounds like another good kid who the organization can be proud of. Always fun learning more about them. Thanks Seth.

When I read your description of his slider, I kept thinking Liriano...you know the guy pitching for the Twins before his surgery. And Frankie didn't have a 100mph fastball. That combination blows my mind, but yes, he does need at least an average change up. Although we all assume #2 will be Kirilloff, I have been wondering if it could be Lewis. Those two are so close in my mind that I see a case for either as #1.
