  1. Looked at Cedar Rapids box score this morning with a different question on my mind. The Kernels are already in the play offs. With all the player movement, was wondering what their chances look like. With pitchers like Balazovic, Enlow and Teng moving on or gone, who will step up after Labor Day. Will one be Cabezas? Or maybe Schulfer will get back to the pitcher he was early this season. They also should be able to count on Rijo, Winder and Palm. Hopefully, Celestino will remain hot and lead the offense. Maybe Steer will heat up and hit like he did the first several weeks with the team. Yunior Severino should also help now that he is healthy. And wouldn't it be nice if Wander Javier would step up and be the stud who leads the Kernels in the play offs. The Kernels are in the play offs. Hopefully, they will make it one game further than last year.
  2. I don't know what would have happened after that out at home, had he not sent him. But count me among those who would not have done so. The only Twin I might have considered sending there would have been Buxton. But with his speed he would have been well beyond third sooner that AD.
  3. Good day in the win column with the GCL Twins splitting a twin bill the only blemish on an otherwise perfect day. And how bout those Red Wings, who at 60-58 remain 2 games over .500. Miranda is probably wondering what he needs to do to be your Hitter of the Day. Two home runs didn't get it done, at least yesterday. He and Bechtold are both having good years at the plate. Hopefully, one will continue getting better as they move through the organization to give the Twins depth at third base.
  4. Didn't see the game as Mediacom went AWOL about 7pm and didn't return until about 5 minutes after the game ended. Liked Odorizzi's comments in the post game about preferring more pitches to more runs, as he explained his 5.2 inning outing.
  5. Great report, mlhouse, thanks. And who the heck does Vallimont think he is, Duran? Don't know if you saw this Tom, but after Kirilloff led off the Pensacola game with a home run, the next time up he was hit by a pitch. No way for me to know if it was an intentional fast ball or the pitcher lost a curve ball or something. Regardless, I don't like seeing that BS, especially with the young man I believe is our #1 prospect. The good news is that he got another hit later on and the Blue Wahoos won. And isn't Matt Wallner having a nice start to his professional career. Haven't compared it to Rooker, but seems similar.
  6. Am confident the Twins will win tonight and tomorrow to end up with a split...the hard way. Smeltzer has looked good in several appearances, NOT against Cleveland. Looks like he has to have nearly perfect command. Will see if he makes it long-term. Don't know what to think about Dobnak, other than I was impressed. Watching him last night, kept thinking he reminds me of some pitcher from the past, someone who was very good. Can't remember if it was some Twin over the past 30 years, a Brave from back in the 50's or 60's, or a Brewer after they came to Milwaukee. Kind of a bulldog, both in stature and how he seems to pitch. Hopefully, Dobnak will get a start 5 games from now and we will see how he does. OK, they got the first of two home run records. Now lets get back on the winning track!!!
  7. In answer to your question, August 23 is the day I expect Graterol to arrive in the TC...or wherever they are playing on that date.
  8. I enjoyed your article, Ted, and am in agreement with what you said. We all must remember that Buxton has been out again for awhile and the team doesn't play as well when he is MIA. Unfortunately, he won't be back until later this month or even Labor Day. Hopefully, Buxton and Cruz are both back around September 1 and the team plays in September like it did in May. Won't that be fun! Should have the problems with the pitching staff ironed out by then also. Don't know what the answers will be, but expect they will find a few.
  9. Saw in today's Strib that Gibson was 'under the weather last night.' If that is correct, not feeling 100% could be a reason he wasn't at his best. Not a good game for it to happen, but ….. happens.
  10. Is it time, Seth, to remove Arraez from the prospect list? Heck, he may be the best rookie in the American League. What a wonderful outing by Balazovic on his return from the Pan Am Games. Assume there isn't time left in the season for him to move up. Hopefully, he will lead the Miracle to a second championship. Although Jax wasn't great, he wasn't terrible either in his first game at AAA. Hopefully, he gets back to his usual self next time out.
  11. Don't know what the future holds for this team, playoffs, wild card or the late fall off to begin preparation for 2020. But I do know that this team seems to believe they are never out of a game. What is becomming clear to me, however, is: 1. Contrary to my previous belief, the FO better begin planning on finding four starters for their 2020 rotation. Hopefully, they will find one or two from the trio of Thorpe, Smeltzer and Dobnak, who all should see lots of time on the Target Field mound the next 7 weeks. 2. It really looks like Zach Littell will be a key part of their 2020 bullpen, and 3. Luis Arraez will be their starting second baseman for the next six years, or longer.
  12. Exactly type of game one wants to see from a pitcher who has gotten his feet wet in the big leagues. Agree with the above comment, let's see him make another start or two where he can focus on being dominant. Then come back and get the job done like we all hope he can, this September and in 2020 and beyond. Am excited to see how Jax does today in his first start in AAA.
  13. Thanks, Nick. Have been thinking about a possible contract extension this winter. Do they offer something similar to Kepler/Polanco, which would be low for someone with Buxton's talent? Then also build in bonuses for number of games played, say beginning at 120? Problem I see with that is Buxton's agent would say, "so you are penalizing him for playing hard and being who he is and what makes him great?" Don't know what they do, other than they gotta keep him long term and on the field.
  14. Not a clue what you were talking about in the opening, Steve. Rochester is now 2 games over .500. Not a lot of time left for a playoff run, but weirder things have happened. Will second, or third, the comments above about Rodriguez. Sure is someone worth following. As is Escobar, who is about a year and a half younger, who also had a very good start. And it is always a good day when we see Javier's name mentioned for something other than an 0 fer whatever. Hopefully, his horrendous first half is behind him and he can show enough to management to get that 40-man slot come November. With a 26 man roster next year, gotta believe someone would take a flyer on his tools and ceiling.
  15. Talking about Cleveland, Trov, wasn't Kluber a pleasant surprise? A good prospect, but not one of their top guys? Maybe Dobnak can be our version of Kluber?
  16. Interesting month, Seth. Would have thought from recalling the daily reports that Ober and Duran had better months. Nothing wrong with their results, just seem to recall several games where they were dominant. Do recall that Ober had one so-so game since returning from the IL which must have been in July. Will be interesting to see if Dobnak gets the call. Everyone knows the Twins are going to need starters in 2020. Could he be one of them? Getting a few or more starts under his belt before the end of this season will help with the answer. Not certain I want to see him get that first start, however, in what is going to be a critical weekend series with the Tribe.
  17. If memory serves, Rooker doesn't have to be added to the 40-man this fall. Really doubt we would see him unless he returns both soon and ripping the cover off the ball.
  18. When selecting last year's deadline to this year, you must take into consideration that he got injured in August last year and played injured for some time. I don't recall exactly how long, but it seemed like the better part of a month.
  19. With all the talk of moving Rosario, I must ask one question. Is team chemistry the most important factor in this year's success? Not being in the locker room or dugout, I have no way of knowing. But it could be. And there is no question that Rosario is a big part of the chemistry on this team. Just look at the three outfielders at game's end of a win. These guys have played together a lot on their way thru the system and all indications are that they really like each other. Forget the streaks, both good and bad. But taking Rosario out of this mix could deflate the Twins like that proverbial birthday balloon when struck with a pin. Personally, I would work like heck this off season to extend both Rosario and Buxton.
  20. As impressed as I was in his first start against the Brewers. Can he repeat it next time out against the Indians? If I recall, he wasn't as good last time in his second start...also against the Indians, wasn't it? Regardless, I really like what I see. Reminds me of those Braves pitchers back whenever, Maddux and Glavine. Neither threw all that hard, but were the definition of being pitchers. Let's hope the Twins got some lightening in a bottle in that Dozier trade and get to go ahead and release it on the American League. But let's not forget the other rookie who made nearly an equal contribution yesterday, Mr. Arraez. After a couple games where I thought he struggled a bit, was back doing what he does so well. Anyone who thinks he won't be on the 25-man roster and playing regularly over the next seven weeks is going to be proven wrong. Add one very fine defensive play and you have one big contribution to a win over a tough KC team.
  21. Took a look at Ober's 6 games since returning from the IL six weeks ago. Six starts for 30.2 innings, 40 K's and only 5 earned runs. And 3 of those runs came in his one so-so start when he lasted only 4.1 innings. So that's 2 earned runs in 26.1 innings in those other five starts. Could the Twins be so fortunate to have one of these guys actually make it to the big leagues and perform as he did down on the farm? You surprised the heck out of me this morning, Seth, with your comment that Larnach will play in the big leagues in 2020. That's optimistic as heck...I like it. The bigger question is where, both what position and with what team? Could the Twins trade one of their current outfielders not under long-term contract to open a position for Rooker, Raley, Kirilloff, Larnach and others to battle for? If so, is it this coming winter? Assuming they extend Rosario and Buxton, I like to think their outfield is set for the next 5+ years. But do they look at it that way? Also great seeing Benninghoff have success on the mound.
  22. Thanks for the update on Julien, Seth. Had forgotten about his signing near the end of the signing period. Agree about AAA. Also agree that it makes sense. Was just reminiscing that it seems to have changed from what it was 10-20 years ago. Or at least what I remember from back then.
