  1. The Twins have too much of their immediate future riding on those two to not have a long leash. Like I said, if they don’t look better by the end of this season, Falvine has some tough choices. Sending them to AAA won’t help them get better IMO and certainly won’t help evaluate them against MLB competition. If they both still are terrible after having 1500 carrer AB, I’m done. They can be released for all I care. If that happens, it will be obvious to me that they aren’t going to get better wearing a Twins uniform. If they then blossom somewhere else, so be it. It will simply be a further indictment of the Twins player development and coaching staffs. Many of whom have already been dismissed.
  2. The CAREER MLB and MiLB numbers for Recker are better than Wilson’s. Not much, but that is exactly why I said “not much”.
  3. Garver is still extremely inexperienced behind the plate. He has fewer than 3000 innings caught as a professional. John Ryan Murphy, who is actually a few months YOUNGER, has over 5400, close to DOUBLE. Garver may or may not ever get better, but to expect him to be a polished receiver now is simply not realistic. Through no fault of his own. Why Anthony Recker wasn’t retained this offseason is a curiosity only Falvine can explain. Would he be a better hitter than Wilson? The numbers say yes. Maybe not much, but likely some.
  4. That’s called regression to the norm. Anyone who thinks he is going to be a 120 OPS + hitter is deluding themselves.
  5. I think it is time for Ssno and Buxton to either prove they can play at the MLB level or prove they can’t. IMO, too many here are still thinking of contending in 2018. If Buxton and Sano don’t produce, the Twins WON’T contend. It really is that simple. The offense truly is built around those two. The Twins already know Buxton and Sano can hit AAA pitching. They need to find out if they can hit MLB pitching. Because if they can’t, Falvine needs to decide what to do about that THIS offseason.
  6. It would be pretty foolish to try to replace the offense the Twins essentially aren’t getting from Sano, Buxton, Dozier, Polanco and Mauer by acquiring a catcher. There’s no catcher out there that has that kind of bat. Better than Wilson? Sure. Enough to really move the needle? Not IMO. If the Twins don’t get production from the players listed above, they can forget the playoffs in 2018. No trade they can make will help enough to replace the core of the offense. No team could essentially replace their core offense midseason. It’s time to start thinking about 2019 and beyond IMO.
  7. Reminds me of a guy that used to catch for the Twins. Actually, a couple different guys.
  8. When Hunter was sent down in 2000 he had fewer than 500 MLB PA. Buxton has over 1000.
  9. What I’m saying is that the Twins gave up on Hicks despite him NOT looking completely overmatched at the plate. Buxton is completely overmatched. If he were to cut his K rate by 1/3 it would STILL be higher than MLB average. We’re talking about a guy who is a below MLB average HR hitter. Sure, Buxton will probably get better. Most guys do with experience. But, he is SO BAD that it would take an enormous amount of improvement to make him an AVERAGE hitter.
  10. I’ve mentioned this before, but I still think adding bit pieces for this year would be a waste of effort. Sure, the standings say the Twins are in it, but Cleveland still has more talent than the Twins. Considerably more. A lot has been made of the fact that the Twins have only played 10 divisional games. Cleveland has only played 15. So, they are just as likely to take care of business against subpar teams, including the Twins. The Indians that are scuffling some are just as likely to rebound to their career norms as those that are for the Twins. Indeed, moreso. No one is really sure what the “career norms” for Sano and Buxton are right now. Now, let’s talk run differential. The Indians are + 13. For perspective, the 30-20 Mariners are +9. The Twins are -17. They are where they should be. The Indians are not. They are far more likely to improve their record than the Twins. Sell, not buy IMO.
  11. Many of the Twins own prospects have done little to establish that the Twins player development strategies are working. It will tske Falvine time to get their people into key spots and even longer for those changes to impact prospects.
  12. There’s also plenty of doubt. From the “national publications” thread: Jeff Sullivan 9:59 For everything that's ever been written about Buxton, his year-to-year strikeout rates have spanned from 29% to 36% 10:00 Which is to say, they've spanned from high to very high Maybe -- just maybe -- Byron Buxton isn't going to be a good major-league hitter
  13. I’m guessing very few of you are old enough to have heard Bill Cosby’s take on dogs and cats.
  14. He’s not changing the game on the bases with a .200 obp. And he won’t have the opportunity to make plays in the OF when he is benched to inject offense a couple times a week and pinch hit for a couple more times. Buxton right now has about 100 more PA than Hicks did as a Twin. Their OPS+ are nearly identical, 83 for Buxton, 81 for Hicks. Biggest difference offensively is K rate. Hicks was under 20%. Buxton is over 30%. If you don’t put the bat on the ball, you are going to have a hard time being a productive hitter. The Hicks trade may go down as one of the most impactful in Twins history. They got nothing from Murphy. And now he’s doing well elsewhere. Hicks has blossomed into a solid, borderline all star centerfielder. Buxton isn’t a completely lost cause - yet - but it’s hard to envision him ever being even an average MLB hitter because he has zero strike zone recognition.
  15. There was a substantially lower threshold of offense expected from shortstops than centerfielders, and still is. Buxton is going to have to hit enough to convince teams to play him. At some point, the “he’s still young” excuse stops being valid. At some point, he’ll have to contribute offensively or he won’t play.
  16. There once was a woman from Venus, whose body was shaped... Oh wait. This is a family friendly site.
  17. And he may never stay in the lineup for enough games to do so. I’m not sure he’ll ever even hit 30.
  18. Actually everyday when they aren’t offering him the sun, moon, venus, mars and half of jupiter to be a lifelong Twin. I think the Twins are waiting to see uranus shrink first.
  19. “In the long run, we’re all dead.” John Maynard Keynes
  20. Are we certain Carter doesn’t represent the Ghost of Christmas Present with regards to Sano?
  21. Wins and losses are not what the focus of minor league baseball should be. The minor leagues exist to develop players, period. On a typical low A team there might be as many as 5 legitimate MLB prospects. The rest of the team is there to surround the legit prospects with capable professionals.
  22. I fail to understand why Addison Reed didn’t pitch the 9th. He hasn’t pitched since Sunday. Tomorrow is an off day. Today was Pressly’s 4th outing in the last 5 games. It isn’t why the Twins lost, of course. Still. Puzzling to say the least.
  23. I literally have no idea what I saw now. But I swear when I looked it up earlier, Grossman had like almost .100 higher OPS. BUT, then it is past my bedtime...
  24. Yes, but you originally asked who had the higher raw OPS. That is substantially more one sided, with the other guy having the edge.
