Scouting Twins Prospects: Gilberto Celestino
wabene replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Celestino has always intrigued me. Good comments, I see a floor of a busy 4th outfielder. Man his D didn't look good in the bigs, but he seemed a little overwhelmed. Yes the AAA bounce back, as Mr Lease said, has probably got many of us excited. His ceiling has got to be above average center fielder. If he and Alcala top out it'll be Pressley who? Good things come to those who wait. This series of articles has got me excited. I'm not so into speculation on possible trade or free agency targets, but self scouting? That is crucial and here's hoping the FO is working harder on this than you guys! -
Twins Announce Changes to Coaching Staff
wabene replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He was their offensive coordinator. Not maybe exactly apples to apples but he has the ultimate responsibility for the Marlins production.- 12 replies

Three Indicators that Jorge Alcala has Broken Out

Yeah could be something especially if Duran goes the opposite way. Still would need two FA starters though but yeah maybe just one frontline guy. -
Twins Announce Changes to Coaching Staff
wabene replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I just came from reading a similar article in the Strib and the comment section was filled with complaints that the Twins where stupid and that James Rowson was the second coming. They talk about how high they were on Rowson when it is unlikely any of them have ever even laid eyes on the guy. The Marlins had the second worst offense in baseball while the Twins were 11th. Gawd drives me nuts. With the Twins situation this year I don't think there is any scapegoating. They were caught a little off guard with their staff losses last year and scrambled to fill rolls. Varela has many good qualities, gets on with the players, speaks Spanish etc. My guess is they have come to realize what they want in a hitting coach and Edgar wasn't as strong in those areas so they moved him to a spot that is a better fit. These coaching moves getting a more technicle hitting coach, a pitching coach with big league experience who may not be as technicle as Wes but have more real game experience and a bench coach that they feels compliments Baldelli. I can see the logic behind all this and it could be a real difference maker. They had their team torn apart last year and now they are taking the time to carefully reconstruct it.- 12 replies

Byron Buxton Isn’t the Next David Ortiz
wabene replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Something not mentioned yet, but of course most know, is that Big Pappi cleared wavers as every team turned him down. That allowed Boston to sign him on the cheap. The Bosox won the lottery here similar to the Twins hitting the jackpot with Santana. If the Twins can't get a deal done they will have some leverage in a trade. While that is going down it will be a **** storm of interweb vitriol. Be very afraid- 32 replies

Another analogy pertaining to bring injury prone would be the boxer's chin. Some have it and some don't. It may be the most underrated talent the assinine Floyd Mayweather has. Muhammed Ali had a phenomenal chin and sadly relied on it heavily, possibly contributing to his health conditions later in life. Wladimer Klitschko had his fragile whiskers exposed and had to revamp his fighting style to accommodate it. It is quite possible that Buxton and, say, Mike Trout could run into the same wall at the same speed and have completely different outcomes. A wide receiver vs a fullback. Would you send Randy Moss as lead blocker into the hole on a halfback counter? (Ok, maybe because you don't like him).

3 out of his first 4 seasons Kyle Rudolph played in only 8 games missing half of each season and earning the dreaded injury prone lable. He publicly lamented this and vowed to change it. He did not miss a game the next 5 seasons garnering the iron man lable. It could happen for Buxton too. As Lev stated some are more injury prone which can be genetic but I believe that protecting yourself while playing sports is a skill. Some are better at it than others. I would sign Buxton to a long term deal as long as incentives are a big part of it. His track record dictates this type of deal. 12.5m a year base salary with up to double that, 25m a year, if he plays.

40-man roster decisions, part 1: position players
wabene commented on Squirrel's blog entry in In My Opinion
One thing people forget about teams in places like Florida is the population is from all over the US and they bring their fan allegiances with them. Add in crappy ballparks and the time of year when people are indoors, it's just not conducive to that boys of summer experience. -
What Happens to the Twins Emerging Star?
wabene replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
The one thing I noticed reading through this is hardly any mention of Cave, Garlic, Refsnyder and Astudillo. That is as it should be. They have been useful but with Gordon, Celestino, Rooker, Arraez, Rortvedt and Larnach they are now unnecessary. I could see a few of these guys turn into above average regulars. In particular Celestino really turned it around and I like his ceiling. Gordon, if he can fill out and gain just 20lbs could surprise us. Time to prune the 40 man!- 52 replies

Age is a factor but not the whole enchilada. There are so many variables. All you have to do is look at Nelson Cruz' career.

Ok I'm going to agree with this. Considering how many starters the squad needs next year let's give Jax another chance as rotation depth.

@big dog Guys like Jax and Barnes sure got a lot of time in the bigs, though. Head-scratcher. Perhaps because they were healthy. Duran, injured. Winder, injured. Balazovic, AA not ready. Drew Strotman was ineffective and maybe not ready, but since he is on the 40 man I could see an argument for him. Cano is not on the 40 man and I can't remember why but there was an advantage to waiting till next year for him (it was mentioned on TD, of course). I'm not sure who else could be causing your itchy head. We got to see more rookies this year than I ever remember happening. Out of the pitching auditions we can be excited about Ober and Ryan in the rotation and perhaps Jax and Moran in the pen.

At the time Wells was the one that had me shaking my head. Starting pitcher of the year, big fastball, really good stuff and a huge frame at 6'8". C'mon man!

Any reason Woods-Richardson came out after only 3 innings? I like him as a prospect, but starters only throwing 3 innings in AA doesn't exactly make my socks roll up and down. Since they didn't use him in the Olympics, he didn't pitch for weeks. They are cautiously building him up.

I think Miller went 6 for 6 or something like that the other day. Hell get there. Another outing like this from Strotman and perhaps a start for the big club is in order. He is on the 40 man. He could even give Ryan a week off although he is one day behind him pitching schedule wise. Miranda's mini slump is ova and the power stroke is back. Gleeman may be right about not calling him up. He is not on the 40 man yet and let him finish his green of a season on a high note right where he is. He won't be up until a ways into next season anyway ?

Twins Minor League Week in Review: One Week To Go
wabene replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Nice to see Miranda bounce back after a mini slump. He got his slugging percentage back up this week. Celestino took some lumps with the big club, but you gotta like the grit he has shown in bouncing back.- 7 replies

Sign him for depth, but it's gotta be cheap. If the guy could just get in better shape I think it would particularly prolong his career. He and Gordon should become roommates. Gordon cooks for Michael for Big Mike for Flash.

Maybe it would be better if you saw a list for the whole league. I would guess this happens with every team. Player development is more of a crap shoot in MLB than any other sport. Hindsight is 20/20. All teams make minor trades that include young lottery tickets like Gil and some of the Twins prospects you read about were acquired this way. What happens if Baddoo settles in as a 4th outfielder type and Miranda is an all-star? Do we then criticize the Detroit FO for taking the wrong guy? I will agree that there are some fringe vet types on the 40 man at times that I would love to hear the reasoning explained.

Week in Review: Rotation Reinforced
wabene replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It seemed in Ryan's start that he came out firing 93-95, but after a few innings he was sitting 90-92. Not sure if he gets gassed or if I am misinterpreting things.- 14 replies
