He’s only 21. Most of the Twins college players have started in E Town. But I do agree, it’s great to see him tear it up thus far.

We were at the Chattanooga game last night, and as Cody mentioned... they weren't clutch with RISP. Although the one caveat to that is Rooker. He absolutely scorched a groundball to the left side that the 3B for Jax had to make a ridiculous diving stop to grab and just barely beat the runner at second for the force (when Rooker makes solid contact, wow...). Bencomo didn't pitch all that poorly, but nothing he threw really jumped off the table though. He was sitting between 88-90 all night, although he did seem to have a fair changeup working. Other than that... he looks like your typical journeyman innings eater. *** Just remembered this... my son (who is a 14 y.o. pitcher just entering his Freshman year of HS) noticed this as soon as Bencomo through his first pitch. In his exact words, "Wow, see how flat his ball looks. It's almost like he has no movement on his FB."*** The real killer was the throwing error by Motter with two outs. It was a fairly hard hit grounder to short, and he would have had time to set his feet... but he rushed, and uncorked a throw that was two to three feet outside of Rooker's reach up the first base line. Wiel's homerun was a scorching line drive to left center that exited the park in a real hurry and was never in doubt.

Good point. Also, I have to wonder if at some point though, if Falvine aren't somewhat setting Molly up to fail. As folks have said, he was never their pick or choice for manager and was for all intents and purposes handpicked by the Pohlads (or at least it seems that way to me... I know, I know, put the crayons down and step away ).- 134 replies

Article: MIL 3, MIN 2: Pushing Against a Stone
MN_ExPat replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I... well I'm not really sure how to put this but, for some reason in the back of my brain I've got this odd feeling that some of this sits with ownership. Some folks have pointed out that Moliter oddly seems to have a considerable amount of sway over personnel decisions. If I remember correctly, didn't the owner publicly come to Molly's defense during the crisis of 2016? I can't fully put many of these "oddities" we are seeing with the roster fully on the FO, at least not yet. I know this seems a little out there, but it just feels like the FO is hampered a little by Moliter's relationship with the owner.- 48 replies

Article: MIL 6, MIN 5: Oh, That Rodney Experience

I totally agree. Sometimes a team is just... snake bit, and the season goes south. For me, it is that imperfection of baseball that keeps me enthralled even through the years like this . -
Article: MIL 6, MIN 5: Oh, That Rodney Experience
MN_ExPat replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sigh...... This has been one of the most frustrating seasons I can remember. Not really because they haven't been doing well (part of the reason, but not the whole story for me), but because this is one of the most physically talented and gifted (core) groups of players I've seen in in quite some time. When I match that talent with on field production... well, it's disheartening to say the least. -
Watched Larnach in the CWS. The kid can rake, is a lot more athletic than I initially thought and also seemed to possess a plus arm in the outfield. All in all I think the Twins got a pretty good player in that pick. But as we all know, nothing is given in baseball... only earned. So Godspeed and good luck Mister Larnach. We wish you well on your journey.

Article: Week in Review: Cooked
MN_ExPat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So, my son comes to me last night and tells me he wants to make an announcement. He says, "Dad, I love you but... I have to tell you that I'm officially rooting for the Mariners (and Cubs) the rest of the year." Oh the shame... (btw, anybody looking to adopt a HS RHP freshman with potential to be a NAIA / Div III / Div II player? Free to a good home) -
I'd have to concur a little. 129 pitches (while a phenomenal performance by the freshman), does make me cringe, especially considering he had thrown 20-30 pitches in game 1. However, while I don't agree with the OSU coach keeping him in for that many pitches, I can understand the thought process and why he might do it. This got me thinking about other herculean pitch counts and brought me to my favorite game of all time: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIN/MIN199110270.shtml Here's the link to Baseball Reference for Game 7 1991 WS. Morris hurled 126 pitches in this CG (and yes I know, he wasn't a college freshman )

Article: Why Isn't Mitch Garver Playing More?
MN_ExPat replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would love to say something smart, clever and perhaps even a little pithy about the current catching scenario, but let's face it, expecting that from me is like expecting Bobby Wilson to hit .300 or Sano to put up Barry Bonds-like walk numbers... pretty sure that's not going to happen. I'd be all for Astudillo getting a chance as backup to Garver (heck that no look throw to 1st he made alone earns that chance for me), but I'm not sure the team is willing to part ways with Wilson yet and he does seem to call a good game. -
Great write up as usual Seth. I'd like to think that your spot on with most of those observations, with the exception of the AAA to MLB jumps. With those, I.E. Gonsalves/Slegers, I look at the them and what they've done and I think they deserve the chance, but... then I look at the Twins current roster and I draw a complete blank. Baring injury or a slump of obscene and epic proportions, I just don't know how they'll fit in outside of a double headers/spot start here and there. And thusly.... NIBB HIGH FOOTBALL RULES!!!!!!!

Article: Bartolo, the Twins, and a Guy Named Phil
MN_ExPat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No one says you have to like him, or his numbers. The last few years they haven't' been even eyebrow raising overall. I look at Big Sexy and he makes me think of that TV show/movie or video game I loved so much back in my mispent youth (it's the nostalgia of it). Yes, I still mutter under my breath about how he "stole" the Cy Young from Johan, and yes I cringed every time he took the mound for the Twins... but in the end, he was just "fun" to watch. The complete game shutout he threw last year... my son and I will still talk about that and say, "did we really just see that?" and then laugh our heads off. It was awesome. In the end, to me (and hopefully a few others) it's players (Colon and Hughes) and stories like this that make baseball what it is meant to be. Thanks Ted.- 10 replies

Plus I'm pretty sure Romero is a dog person. This would probably explain his easy going, but inner bulldog mentality. Paxton on the other hand... He strikes me as a cat person, but then again that might be just because he is Canadian. Not that I have anything against Canadians. I ran into some exceptionally tough and talented Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan (hats of to those guys... especially for finding a way and place to play hockey in a high desert). It's just that, well... I don't really have anything I just needed to find some way to make a really good pitcher seem like the bad guy and thus make him easier to root against. So there... Paxton hates puppies and kittens and likes to yell at kids playing on his lawn.

Robinson Cano, Excuses, and the Dominican Republic
MN_ExPat commented on Luke Albrecht's blog entry in Dominican Adventure
Excellent write up Luke. I feel that you are pretty spot on in your observation. I was just talking to my son the other day about this (who is an aspiring player himself) and he was having a hard time trying to grasp why a player like Cano and our own Polanco would do such a thing. While I probably did not explain it as well as you touched on in your story, I also added that beyond baseball there are not as many opportunities for young men in the DR. Baseball is next to God there and the pressure to excel, to stand out and be noticed and gain your chance in the MLB and glory in your homeland (or maintain what they have gained) has to drive many of these young men to take chances they otherwise might not take. We shall see how Cano's legacy holds up, and how Polanco goes forth from his suspension (although, wasn't this his second incident? I thought he had one in the minors, but I can't remember), but I for one am... well, disappointed. It is as you said, the player themselves may face punishment, but the fans, teams, baseball the places like the DR in general that suffer the most.- 2 comments

Great write up SD. I'd have to agree, I'm still pretty bullish on these guys and have no doubt that they will still be at least competitive all summer (even if the "Big 2" get the call at some point).

Article: 2018 MLB Draft Top 50 Prospects: 21-30
MN_ExPat replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great write up Andrew. It's really interesting to see many of these draft eligible players from more of a Twins perspective rather than what MLB provides. Also, you may want to research Randon Jernigan from Glynn Academy in Brunswick, GA. I've seen him play a lot (and know for a fact that the Cubs/Red Sox are all about that Coolaid, i.e. to the tune of a most likely top 5 round pick) and can say without a doubt that he has 70+ speed to go along with a good bat and very good defense. -
Yup. There's a couple of good looking catchers in this years draft (and from Georgia no less ), not sure how high they slot, but they are intriguing.

Article: End of the Road for Phil Hughes and the Twins

Talk about misinterpreting someone. So since we find ourselves at an impasse, I will finish this and say to you, Good Day Sir. I wish you well. -
Article: End of the Road for Phil Hughes and the Twins
MN_ExPat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Once again, not my point. It was merely to point out that I respect his opinions and viewpoints on baseball overall, even if I do not agree with them at times. If Mike wishes to take umbrage over that, so be it. I will happily discuss that with him at a date and time of his choosing (and I hope you don't take it personally) not you. -
Article: End of the Road for Phil Hughes and the Twins
MN_ExPat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I totally concur. I don't believe it's personal in any fashion and as I said in my post, it was clearly time for both parties to move on. I'm glad both the team and Hughes really seemed to handle it in a professional manner. But my point was simply (and maybe poorly explained, but then we shouldn't be all that surprised coming from me), that we shouldn't be "glad" he's gone. Rather it should be to lament that another talented soul is forced from the game he loves due to injuries. -

Fair enough. But, like I said, I respect his opinion... I just don't agree with it.
