Novelty type of pitcher? Just because he throws sidearm? So he's kind of like Neshek was/is a novelty type pitcher? Because he hasn't had any type of success in professional baseball at all.

Article: The Darvish Contingency Plan
MN_ExPat replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's times like these that make me really glad that I'm not the GM/Twins Brain trust. My two cents worth... Archer isn't worth the price the Rays will demand. Why? They don't have to trade him, plus the team control. We've all read the most likely STARTING asking price... Lewis. It goes up from there. If we were trying to get Kershaw... fine, I could close my eyes and pretend it was worth it. But Archer?? He has loads up talent, but up to this point... that just hasn't married up to the numbers that he has put up. Now, before the torches and pitchforks emerge... I'm not saying he doesn't have massive talent and potential. Just that the potential and talent expressed on the field of play give me pause. Especially with the price the Rays will exact from the Twins. So, yes this may be a minority vote, but I just couldn't justify the price for the product desired.- 195 replies

Article: Darvish Down To The Studs
MN_ExPat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If signing Napoli nets Darvish... so be it. Besides, I keep hearing and reading about how well respected Napoli is around the league by players and coaches, and that brings a whole level of value that is often underappreciated. -

Article: A Central Of Historic Proportions
MN_ExPat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Excellent point. I too agree that Chicago will most likely be far scrappier than projected, but at the same time the team is so green that I can't help but feel they will wear down considerably as the season progresses. -
I concur. Perhaps we can petition the league to award all the teams in the league participation trophies so that all teams and players won't feel left out.

I'm pretty sure most folks have seen this from MLB Trade Rumors, but just in case... In his latest Dodgers mailbag, Andy McCullough of the L.A. Times writes that Yu Darvish has “made it clear” that he’d like to return to the Dodgers, which is part of the reason that his market hasn’t moved forward. Darvish, according to McCullough, has been waiting to see if the Dodgers will be able to shed any money; McCullough notes that they’ve explored dealing from positions of depth by gauging interest in well-compensated veterans such as Yasmani Grandal, Logan Forsythe and Hyun-Jin Ryu, though clearly nothing much has come of those endeavors to date. The fact that he’s waited this long suggests some degree of mutual interest, though the Cubs, Twins and Brewers have been most prominently linked to Darvish in recent weeks. So beats the heck out of me. I'm all for it if they do, but at this point I'm ready to say just sign Cobb or Lynn and let's just go ST and play some ball.

Article: Dollars Make Sense For 2018 Twins
MN_ExPat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Here's why I'm ok if the Twins sign a Darvish/Arrieta: #1: I love baseball #2: It's not my money or any of ours for that matter #3: I want to pretend that the Twins really do want to be competitive (even pros don't like to lose). #4: I love baseball (even in the bad years) #5: There are no sure things in life and even more so in baseball #6: It gives me something to share and pass on to my son, so that he may in turn pass it on to his. #7: I love talking about baseball (and yes even arguing about it... stupid Yankees) #8: I'm ok if someone doesn't agree with me or those who want to spend big in FA, I totally understand their arguments/stance. #9: There is nothing else like baseball on this planet and everyone else here is awesome for their love of it.- 37 replies

Article: Get To Know Rule 5 Pick Tyler Kinley
MN_ExPat replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Very true. You really do want to root for the guy, but I also find myself somewhat perplexed/(worried for him?) as to how he will fit in the bullpen. Perhaps he wows in spring training and it makes the decision easier. Then again, it is possible Falvine brought him in to challenge the incumbents with the message that no one is truly guaranteed a spot and you have to earn everything. For only in the crucible of the gauntlet may you be forged anew, and thusly made be warriors cable of great deeds and noble of spirit.- 29 replies

Ok, time to take a break from eating glue paste and crayons... (Hmmm, maybe that's why I keep getting them taken away). Thanks Tom, I really appreciate one more topic to really get my neurotic synapses firing full bore... It's an intriguing thought, but I would concur with many and hope they pull the plug on the bathwater bank and let the water/money flow to Darvish. Lynn and Cobb could be great additions, and it is conceivable that they could both be landed and brought into the fold. But I can't help but feel that Darvish would be the statement the Twins need to make. Will they? I have no earthly clue, but I can hope and dream. And Archer....???? Unless you want to see a recreation of a really bad 70's prison movie shower scene where the "new guy" is played by Twins prospects given up in sacrifice, let us speak of this no more

Great write up Tom. I really love it especially since those are almost the exact same thing I tell my son on a daily basis. Of course he only "listens" when he hears it from Tim Hyers, the Red Sox hitting coach... sigh

Can't say I really have a "problem" with most of those proposed additions with the one exception being players talking to the pitcher or "visiting" the mound. That has been a part of the game since it's inception and IMHO should be left alone. I would agree that the hitter constantly stepping out of the batters box to adjust every part of his uniform imaginable is mind numbingly irritating, but to me a huge part of that starts with the umpire. Don't give the player Carte Blanc to step out all willy nilly. Actually hold his feet to the proverbial fire. If the hitter keeps stepping out, let the pitcher throw a free strike. That would keep them honest.

Very well thought out list. I do like the Wade comparison to Granite, and would probably have to agree. Similar type of player, but different strengths.

Very excellent point Tom. I'd also have to add though, that (at least to me) some parts of it seem to be mental. Almost as if he's expending so much energy and thought on improving his offensive efficiency, that is has pulled some from his defense. I don't think it's the be all end all, but I can't help but feel that it is playing perhaps a small part.
