  1. The Twins have not shown that losing high-priced veterans means more money to spend on free agents. The year after the Twins lost Hunter and Santana their payroll dropped $14 million. After losing Cuddyer, Kubel and Nathan last year the Twins payroll dropped $13 million DESPITE signing Josh Willingham for $7 million a year. Also, the person you'd be expecting to "excell" would be Chris Parmelee who has shown no proof of being able to do so. If the Twins can get prospects back for Morneau I'm totally listening, but I could give a dog fart about the $14 million coming off the books because I don't believe for a second the team would put that savings back into the payroll.
  2. The Twins got a PTBNL for Thome and his name is $$$$$. $$$$$ isn't helping the team this year, but I heard $$$$$ was used for the landscaping at the Pohlad winter place in Cabo.
  3. That's the best assumption from that strange quote. Of course he couldn't say it exactly as you put it becauset that has only been the Twins stratagy for about the last five minutets. Velocity was largely disregarded by this organization up until last year when the Twins finally jumped on the strikeout bandwagon and took a shot at Boer, Boyd, Williams, Hoey and Oliveros. Of course that quote was actually Neyer's, not Ryan's. Neyer may have translated it poorly. It wouldn't be the first time a reporter used Twitter as an excuse for a lax jounalistic effort.
  4. It thought the most baffling quote was:--robneyer ‏@robneyer When it comes to amateur pitchers, Terry Ryan not a big fan of change-ups and curveballs.-- What the hell does is that supposed to mean? The Twins jut about demand everyone in the system learn the change-up. Is he saying that he doesn't like pitchers to throw it BEFORE they come to the Twins so they can learn how to throw it the "right" way? Or is he saying he doesn't like the change-up but people within the organization circumvent his stratagy by teaching it to the kids anyway?
  5. If the Nick Blackburn Law is accurate, that mid-90's sinker can't possibly have any sink to it as he's throwing the thing too damn hard. Guess maybe we'll get to see if Professor Anderson's physics teachings regarding the sinker are accurate, or if a real pitcher will show it's a bunch of crap and Blackburn just isn't very effective at using the pitch.
  6. At least they are trying to help the Rochester club get competitive and draw more fans. Now how about the club in Minneapolis.
  7. Morales hit a game winning three run HR Monday, but that hit was his only one in the last five games. His line is down to .205/.270/.279.
  8. Hicks is a 6'5" 250 lb junior out of Central Florida. His size is indicative of his expected talents. He is an all-or-nothing hitter who, if he makes it to the majors, may very well turn out to be a true three outcome hitter. He is only suited to play 1B as he is slower than Adam Dunn with his leg caught in a bear trap, but he does possess great power potential; the quality most clubs seek in a firstbaseman. Hicks was named the C-USA preseseason player of the year. Last season he had 14 HR and lead his league in RBI with 72. He has a predictably high strikeout rate but also has a very strong walk rate. Out of high school he was drafted by the Giants in the 46th round. He went to college instead, but he was included on the Maxpreps 2008 All-American team with the likes of Danny Hultzman, Garrit Cole, Kyle Skipworth, Eric Hosmer, Tim Beckham, Casey Kelly, Zach Hood, Matt Hobgood and fellow Twins BJ Hermson and Aaron Hicks. Very strong company by any evaluation. Hicks has been assigened to Elizabethbton and will get regular playing time at 1B. As his contact rate and defense are not expected to be his strengths, look for him to be promoted based almost entirely on his run producing numbers. As one of the highest drafted college bats picked by the Twins, look for him to get a shot at A ball before others that may seem more deserving.
  9. The only younger player in the game is Cleveland's Francisco Lindor but he seems to be handling the strike zone pretty well. So are the other younger hitters like Profar and Machado, but Sano seems to have hit a speed bump with his recent K numbers and .237 average. Maybe the Twins aren't so much holding him back as much as he's just not deserving of the spot at this moment.
  10. People talk about the lack of consistancy in ballparks these days but it's always been like that. Roberto Clemente got robbed playing in Forbes, but someone like Duke Snider gets top 50 all-time consideration because the left handed hitter played in Ebbets Field. Check out those demensions: Left field: 348 ft. left-center: 351 ft Center field: 384 ft. Right-center: 344 ft. Right field: 297 ft. Check out his stats after the Dodgers moved to LA and people can see how much a ballpark plays with our perceptions of all time great sluggers. Mel Ott got to 500 HR because right field at the Polo Grounds was 258 ft, I think some infield fly rules get called at that depth!
  11. Previous to last season, Duensing was seen as a future staple of the rotation. There are basically question marks for all five spots come 2013, why not give him another shot. Things looked promising for Duensing just over a year ago, it would seem pretty foolish not to see if he can flash some of what made him effective in the past when the Twins are already scraping the bottom of the pitching barrel as it is. Besides, it's not like his poor 2011 looks any worse than the numbers the 2012 starters are putting up.
  12. Ha, glad I read this before I wasted my time proving the initial statement utterly absurd. I figured it was a new thread too. The Twins have only drafted 4 starting pitchers who have made an All-Star game with the team, and none since Brad Radke was drafted in 1991.
  13. I would guess if Gardy and Anderson have a say (and at this point they actually may not) they would cut him loose. I've never heard either of them as exhasperated as when a reporter asks them about a Liriano performance. I'm for keeping him around at a reasonable price but the coaching staff tends to prefer stability even at the expense of a useful player.
  14. Still, seeing as he was clearly blocked at the majors by players of similar age and still long under team control, you would like to see your team make a decision and try to recoup some value at a point in time when a player still has some. The Twins always said they didn't want to sell the future, but guys like Jones and Michael Restovich clearly had little chance at a future seeing as they were blocked. Selling high on them during a powerful and productive minor league season should have been considered.
  15. Hopefully, yet there was probably 100% agreement in this forum that the Twins needed to release him. The question needs to be, are the Twins snakebit with extremely inconsistant performances, unfortunate timing and unexpected injuries, or is there something more fundementally wrong with the team's decision making process when it comes to their players?
  16. Taillon and Cole? I hope people from other organizations don't find this thread and laugh at us.
  17. Don't forget the Dodgers are also looking for an impact bat at 1B to replace the offensive black hole that is James Loney. The Twins have one of those available too.
  18. Anyone notice that Jason Marquis only gave up 2 ER in 7 IP against the Rangers while striking out 10? This is on top of his first two starts having a 1.46 ERA and a K/9 of 7.3. What the hell? At least his 1.622 WHIP indicates he is about to get a shocking wakeup call.
  19. Nothing to see here. Although he hit a HR two days ago it was his first since week one, and it was the only one of his six hits over his last ten games that was for extra bases. The fact that the Twins went pitcher heavy in the draft may help him keep a roster spot through the season though he likely does not desrve one. The end is near for this former prospect.
  20. I think the Nats view Harper as a future corner infield, and I think the Span speculation has more to do with their lack of top of the order bats. Their leadoff hitters have a .308 OBP this year, they are going to want an upgrade for any kind of meaningful playoff run.
  21. As good as Willingham has been, he doesn't and won't put fans in the seats. As far a marketing goes, he is neither tenured long enough as a Twins nor offensively prolific enough to bring people to the stadium; he is expendable from that standpoint. If Ryan believes the Twins can contend during the last two years of Willingham's contract than he can be hesitant about moving him as misguided as the notion of contending might be. My stratagy would be to start putting out the idea that Willingham is a more consistant and healthier Carlos Quentin seeing as CQ has been the big outfield name on the market. If you can't get a terrific desperation offer, try the move again next year.
  22. I was not aware either, but it's not surprising considering who the Twins regularly run out for the 8th and 9th spots in the order. Hard to drive in runs when the Twins don't get bottom of the order bats on base.
  23. When Benson comes back that will put the Twins top 3 OF prospects (minus Buxton) playing alongside each other. Hopefully this gets the competitve juices flowing. Hicks and Benson certainly need a spark.
  24. And no one grins in a Cormic McCarthy book. Usually because they're all about to die.
