  1. It's pronounced like "sugar" and every time a batter crowds the plate he asks them, "What's the most you have ever lost on a coin toss?"
  2. A Liriano/Span package should be about as similar as the Sanchez/Infante combo. Rental pitcher with a controlable top of the lineup bat, though Span's deal is cheaper and longer. While you're talking to the Reds, start dialing the Rangers.
  3. NL pitchers strike out 2 more times a game than AL DH's? That seems pretty high considering Adam Dunn is attemting to single-handedly strikeout more than every NL pitcher combined this year.
  4. Have to give the M's credit for keeping that under wraps. How many other front offices could keep the news that the face of the franchise wants out for two weeks.
  5. Do we really want a "major leaguer" back? You wouldn't get much value there. If no prospects are being acquired, I'd hold onto him. As long as he's servicable like this year his value will be higher next year after most of his salary has already been paid.
  6. Sounds more like a PR move the team would make after getting rid of the rest of the vets. However, I don't think Hunter would be too excited to come to a rebuilding team. His swing would probably play into Target Field's sweet spot however, just as Willingham and Plouffe seem to be currently benefiting. No doubt the Twins will continue to look for right handed free agent bats with average to above average power moving forward.
  7. There is no need for Frankie the last two months of a broken season. If the Twins want him next year, they are just as able to sign him as any other team should they choose to this off-season. At this point there is no way he signs a mid-season extension seeing as he's the hottest pitcher in the league right now. If Hamels and/or Greinke end up signing deals with their current teams, Liriano and his agent are going to be licking their chops this off-season. To get a deal done now would mean the Twins would have to severly overpay.
  8. All the trade rumors are tagged with the prospective GM's saying they wont give up top prospects for rental players. Now that you can't get comp picks for traded players, trading guys still under contract next year might be the only way to get any valuable prospects back.
  9. Morales tripled last night and scored 2 runs. It was his only hit of the night, and only 5th in the last ten games. He is still doing well to draw walks and has not had a 2 strikeout game in two weeks, but the balls he's putting in play are not falling in there.
  10. Ouch, sorry for the delinquent repy, I didn't realize anyone had posted in this thread. Hicks has spent about a 1/3 of his games at DH. I wouldn't be able to give any technical evaluation of his defense, but it looks like he is splitting most of the 1B duties with recently demoted Rory Rhodes. Hicks has 1 error in 12 games but obviously that is no indication of his defensive skills. He is a big man so DH may be where he ends up, but since he joined the team, he has getting more games at 1B than Rhodes who was getting most of the starts before Hicks' arrival. Since both players are still young, I would take the favorable split for Hicks to mean that he is either better defensively, or the Twins have higher hopes for him and are going to give him the first chance to succeed. His bat has cooled off after his decent start. He is striking out as expected, but has not drawn a walk in ten games. He's batting .216 over this period. It's still early, nothing to get worked up over.
  11. That would be very helpful for most clubs. Still, if the Twins wait several days (weeks) before putting someone on the DL it doesn't make much difference.
  12. I'm glad to see this was a glass half-full post. Negativity had set in and I thought it was going to be a glass half-empty post in referrence to an expected 90 loss season.
  13. The Twins are painfully slow at development, but surely we should be able to expect more than a couple guys to take less than six years to develop especially considering that the Twins almost exclusively draft college arms at the top of the draft over the last six years. Even if someone wants to defend the scouting/drafting/development of the hitters, I don't think there is an arguement for their taste and development in pitchers.
  14. Yet none of those guys were drafted this decade. The guys you listed who have made it to the pros are pretty good players, but most were drafted nearly a decade ago. The Twins have only drafted two players who have made it to the majors since 2007. That's not acceptable. The ten year timeframe may paint a somewhat rosy picture, but the six year time frame is undefensable. You may say it's too soon to judge that six year window, but I don't believe it is. Of those players who may end up being contributors, there are only 3-4 for anyone to get even modestly excited about seeing at the MLB level.
  15. I'd rather the other teams draft the pitchers and begin the development process, the Twins have not proven to be very good at it as of late.
  16. I want to see the Angels get another arm, like Liriano, before the deadline and look to retain said arm the following season. This would cause them to second guess picking up Dan Haren's $15.5 million option. After a down year, Dan Haren may not be able to command the contract normally expected and he may fit into the Twins budget if he has to settle for a more reasonable offer. He's still only 31 and is not someone with major injury concerns.
  17. I would have liked the prospect of the Cardinals going after Liriano a lot more if Dave Duncan was still the pitching coach. Pitchers like Liriano, who had good stuff but previously were very inconsistant did very well under Duncan. If he was still the pitching coach, the Cardinals would probably not be as concerned with Liriano's inconsistancies.
  18. I always thought the guy would end up in the bullpen. Throws hard but inconsistant and less than adaquate control. If the guy gets released and costs the prorated minimum why not go after him. Other clubs would think the same thing too however, and there are probably plenty of more attractive places than the basement of the AL Central. If he becomes a free agent and money is not a factor, someone more attractive than the Twins will come calling.
  19. I noticed Esmerling Vasquez got the start for Rochester Sunday. Was it a desperation move by the Redwings because of the recent starter shuffling, or is it a move requested by the Twins because they are running out of starters they can run out to the mound?
  20. Another great article, which is why I hate to point out that Mark Trumbo is holding the other outfield position and is putting up MVP caliber numbers. The Angel's are always after pitching though, and Liriano shouldn't be out of the question. They could trade for him with an eye toward offering him arbitration next year. If their current choices for their #3 pitcher next year are Liriano at arbitration value or the disappointing Ervin Santana at $13 million or Dan Haren at $15.5 million, Liriano may be the more attractive option.
  21. Playing the hindsight game may sound like whining, but those that don't learn from history are condemned to repeat it. The fact is under Terry Ryan's leadersip the Twins have never drafted a starter who has made an All Star game. Like it or not there are compelling reasons to believe Ryan is not willing to learn from his mistakes.
  22. Wimmer's scouting report was great control with a good curve and change up and a fastball that touched 92. Everyone agreed that he would probably be on the fast track to the majors but his low velocity would not enable him to be an ace. I don't remember anybody being excited with the Wimmers pick. Everyone knew it was coming, but most people were pleading to take someone with some velocity and upside, particularly because a year after drafting Gibson, BA and the other rankings gave us Twins fans a kick to the gut by saying Gibson was good but didn't have the strikeout potential to be an true ace.
  23. Had the Twins let Santana walk and taken the comp picks instead of getting a grab bag from the Mets, they may have been able to have Gibson, Trout and Tyler Skaggs had Santana's Elias ranking in the AL remained higher than Francisco Rodriguez's and Mark Teixeiria's following the 2008 season. Those two players were what netted the Angel's those two high ceiling picks in 2009. Everyone did agree Wimmers was the closest to the big leagues and before the draft, everyone also agreed that he was going to the Twins at pick 21. So at least 20 other teams agreed that taking upside is a better move than playing it safe, yet every scout, analyst and agent had the Twins pegged perfectly.
  24. I notice that four players drafted after Alex Wimmers in the first round of the 2010 draft are ranked higher than Buxton.
  25. I'm sure right now the Rochester fans are ripping the organization (as usual) for letting New Britain have the more exciting outfield. Hicks turnaround nearly coincided with Arcia's callup, hopefully Benson joins the motivation party.
