  1. Why would you compare baseball with basketball? Perhaps you could look at last year and notice the improvement by the Orioles, White Sox and A's who all had the same suspect talent but unexpectedly competed due to managerial changes. Still I've said it before, I don't want to see Gardy fired unless Ryan is canned first. Gardy's in game management has been poor and he keeps throwing the young guys under the bus for petty mistakes, but this is Ryan's mess and I don't want to see him try to lay the blame on someone else. The game has passed him by and he does not seem comfortable with the current economic boon and contract trends that the other clubs are utilizing to stay competitive.
  2. True, but if Stewart was going to cost the full slot or over slot anyway, the bonus pool wouldn't have done any good to help throw around to HS kids drafted in later rounds.
  3. I was going to accuse this guy of being an obvious Twins fan but it looks like most of his contributions on SB Nation involve the Yankees. So it's legitimate. Legitimately insane.
  4. He won't go to college if he gets' #4 money. Even if he did, I've started to sour on so many other options that getting the #5 pick next year doesn't sound like the worst think in the world right now.
  5. In the Choose Your Own Adventure universe, I think you are always supposed to do the opposite of what the Bald Wizard tells you. http://cdn.newsday.com/polopoly_fs/1.2346674.1286654916!/httpImage/image.JPG_gen/derivatives/display_600/image.JPG
  6. If that conversation took place, I can't imagine anyone could spin that logically to him. No Twins pitcher has been consistant (ly effective) and they are promoting the guy who last season was handed the mantle of Mr. Inconsistancy after Liriano got traded. The non-promotion is clearly Super 2 related, which is fine as long as Gibson doesn't hold it against the organization. This could unintentionally work out well for the club however. Hopefully Deduno pitches well and forces his way into a regular rotation spot. Then when the Super 2 deadline passes and the Twins can freely call on Gibson, one of the actual terrible vets will get pushed aside. If Gibson took Hernandez's spot, the Twins would probably give the vets much more leash seeing as Deduno isn't exactly a top prospect they NEED to make room for.
  7. And call up the Handsome Soda? He and Parmelee are pretty similar players.
  8. I agree, particularly if he and Boras truely believe his injury is the reason for his lower velocity. The monetary difference between a top five pick and a pick in the teens is pretty high. I'd think going back to school is looking more and more likely. The Twins can get him at #4 next year.
  9. Has anyone said they hated Gardy? There is a distinction I hope you are aware. I like Gardy a lot and long ago he was great for the Twins, but the product is getting stale, something has to change. No grey area there huh? I must have voted wrong.
  10. Well that's the plan. Though I think your optimism might let you down at some point. If a third of these guys pan out we should be extremely excited.
  11. ".317/.420/.559, 39 2B, 15 3B, 27 HR, 131 RBI, 112 BB and 73 SB. And, that my friends, “ain’t bad”. (I did the math, that’s actually the exact same stat-line that the entire Twins team is on pace to put up this year. Ok, I’m joking. Cool it.)" Would have been believable save for the slash line.
  12. Turn to FSN, I think they are currently on.
  13. I really dislike how the draft guru's project starters. Manaea will be a three? I've heard the same thing about Meyer and May and plenty of other supposedly high strikeout arms. Number threes aren't generally high strikeout arms. High strikeout guys likely end up as front of the rotation arms, or bust out to the bullpen or not make it at all. For some reason the experts seem to think that the fair way to peg their potential is to settle on the halfway point bewteen these scenarios even though the halfway point is the least likely outcome.
  14. They have a discernation for plays like that. If it happens further than 250 feet from the plate a ball leaving the park under unusual circumstances like this is a homerun. If it happens under 250 ft its an automatic double. I remember about a decade ago a batter smoked a line drive off the pitchers cleat and the ball carried over the outfield fence. That was correctly ruled a double even though it was more awesome than 95% of all regular homeruns. Which umpire is tasked with carrying the 250 ft tape measure is beyond me though.
  15. I actually think it would fall under the "automatic double" rather than the "ground rule double." Still, must not have happened. I've heard enough from Red Sox fans to know that they don't get any breaks. The bad breaks always happen to them, no for them.
  16. I only disagree in the fact that this number should be lowered to 5.
  17. From the Fargo Forum: Twins call up former SDSU pitcher Thielbar | INFORUM | Fargo, ND How can this team seriously justify demoting Pedro Martinez!!!
  18. Well just looking at the first 5 rounds I count 62 players that have made their MLB debut from the past 4 drafts. Thats an average of 2 per team.
  19. Nice work and a lot of effort. As you touched on above, the sampling is a little swayed simply because we don't yet have data on Buxton, Rosario, Gibson etc but that does little to show the Twins drafts have not been terribly effective. The offensive side has perhaps been adaquate to above average but the pitching track record is beyond abysmal. Since moving to Minnesota, this team has drafted only 4 starting pitchers who have made a total of 4 All-Star appearances with the Twins and none since Brad Radke gave up 2 hits and a walk in his one inning of work in the 1998 Mid-Summers Classic. Those four pitchers are Radke, Scott Erickson, Frank Viola and Bert Blyleven. Terry Ryan was the man in the GM seat for none of them.
  20. You know the arguement is not going to end in the Twins favor if you really want to start comparing what it costs to go to the various staduims compared to team payroll right?
  21. There is usually some middle ground in these kinds of decisions. The Twins just don't typically land in it. There probably would have been little reaction had the Twins called Hicks, Arcia and Gibson up before the Super 2 cut off but after the service time exemption. Likewise, fans likely would not have gotten upset had they not persued Grinke had they gone after Dempster, Haren or Jackson instead of the bottom of the barrell options the team chose. We also likely would not be upset if the Twins gave players two days to test out an injury before putting them on the DL instead of waiting a week and playing with a 24-man-roster during that time. Similarly they have almost no ability to find pitchers who can manage an acceptable K% and BB%, they seem to always find guys who are very good at one while terrible at the other. So perhaps if this team started operating within an accepted margin of error, we would be more forgiving.
  22. I'I would imagine since it's based on a curve, the Twins early promotions of Hicks and Arcia would actually help the Twins in that it would tilt the deadline a little earlier. These situations are different though. I could care less if Gibson gets another arbitration year. On the other hand, I DON'T want to lose a year of Hicks and Arcia. Why does it seem this team bungles every situation lately?
  23. Gibson (and Arcia) are already past that point, they only needed 20 days in the minors to delay free agency. You're thinking the the Super 2 cutoff which is almost certainly what the Twins are concerned with. I don't think it would have stopped the team from bringing him north with the team from Ft. Myers had Gibson been ready, but now that the Twins are about 2 weeks away from saving a few million bucks, I'm sure they've decided against bringing him up until early June.
  24. The Cape guns may have been fast but surely the scouts watching knew of the accuracy. Fast guns also wouldn't explain his utter dominance over the hitters. I think that was more impressive than any velocity. Still, I think this is a rare occurance where the HS arm is the safer pick. From the sound of it, I don't know that Manaea needs less developmental work than Stewart. Both of them may need to be broken down quite a bit to be built back up properly.
  25. The stafff is terrible as predicted, although Gardy has made some pretty poor decisions with the pitching moves. He does not seem to have a feel when to pull Correia specifically. It should go without saying, in a tight contest, he or any other starter should not be in late game situations if they allow a runner to advance to scoring postion with less than two outs, they just are not able to strike anyone out which prevents the runners from advancing. Despite that, I actually don't want to see Gardenhire canned. At least not until Ryan is. This IS Ryan's mess, Gardy is simply bathing in it. I don't want Ryan to give any impression that Gardy failed when the failure is actually due to Ryan's reluctance to identify and pay for competent pitching.
