  1. Gibson (and Arcia) are already past that point, they only needed 20 days in the minors to delay free agency. You're thinking the the Super 2 cutoff which is almost certainly what the Twins are concerned with. I don't think it would have stopped the team from bringing him north with the team from Ft. Myers had Gibson been ready, but now that the Twins are about 2 weeks away from saving a few million bucks, I'm sure they've decided against bringing him up until early June.
  2. The Cape guns may have been fast but surely the scouts watching knew of the accuracy. Fast guns also wouldn't explain his utter dominance over the hitters. I think that was more impressive than any velocity. Still, I think this is a rare occurance where the HS arm is the safer pick. From the sound of it, I don't know that Manaea needs less developmental work than Stewart. Both of them may need to be broken down quite a bit to be built back up properly.
  3. The stafff is terrible as predicted, although Gardy has made some pretty poor decisions with the pitching moves. He does not seem to have a feel when to pull Correia specifically. It should go without saying, in a tight contest, he or any other starter should not be in late game situations if they allow a runner to advance to scoring postion with less than two outs, they just are not able to strike anyone out which prevents the runners from advancing. Despite that, I actually don't want to see Gardenhire canned. At least not until Ryan is. This IS Ryan's mess, Gardy is simply bathing in it. I don't want Ryan to give any impression that Gardy failed when the failure is actually due to Ryan's reluctance to identify and pay for competent pitching.
  4. Ha, couldn't have said it better myself. Well not faster anyhow.
  5. It's inexplicable, but teams often seem to get a spark once the high salary vets get traded and the manager gets canned.
  6. he Kernals played ten games in eight days, Hicks started all of them. The strikeouts returned this week with 11 in the ten games with 4 multi-strikeout games. He had four extra-base its, all doubles.
  7. Agreed, I want to see the Handsome Soda get a shot once a spot on the 25-man opens up.
  8. As in promote him to Minnesota? I understand the concern after TJ surgery, but I'll take a manager at the MLB level who's not afraid of the mythical 100 pitch forcefield.
  9. Of course, how fortunate will it be for the Twins when those 2-3 extra starts by Hernandez or Pelfrey cause Gibson to lose Super 2 status. As the team threw caution to the wind with Arcia and Hicks, I'm sure it wasn't a consideration early on in the season. However, I'll bet the front office thinks they are getting too close to the cut off to promote Gibson now. They'll sacrafice those 3 starts to save possibly millions of dollars now that they've come this far.
  10. Yup, no argument there. The Twins starters should not be in the majors.
  11. Just throwing this out there and it might be grasping at straws, but bullpen arms generally have a higher K/9 than the starters. So a team that uses its bullpen a lot may have an inflated K/9. Of course a team that uses its bullpen a lot also is probably giving up a bunch of runs early. Would the K/9 to runs/9 coefficient be different if we just factored in starting pitchers?
  12. I hope Law is right about the Twins draft board and their intentions.
  13. In Dunn's at bats he either hits a home run, strikes out or walks. The Twins pitchers don't walk anyone nor do they strike them out. It doesn't take an expert to figure out the likely outcome. Also see Jim Thome vs. Twins pitchers.
  14. I think he is. 60' 6" away from the batters unfortunately.
  15. I'd like a power arm too, but Manaea does not appear to have that at present. He's been throwing in the mid to high 80's most of the spring and only recently got into the low 90's. I don't know what you like in Frazier or particularly Meadows that you don't like in Bryant. He has great plate discipline and walks nearly a third more than he strikes out. Frazier profiles to be a much bigger swing and miss bat. Meadows' entire hit tool is in question. Bryant now plays 3B but could also profile as a corner OF and surely a 1B as well. If you're simply looking at Frazier's HS offensive numbers, Bryant was pretty comparable, but of course now he is much closer which also reduces some uncertainty. Edit: I forgot, I wanted to see if I got this straight. You said the Twins already had Bryant in Sano and you instead want Fraizer or Meadows. Is it really your opinion that Frazier and Meadows are better talents or prospects than Miguel Sano?
  16. And is the strikeout the only way to prevent the defense from factoring into the outcome of any particular at bat? Yes. I don't even liked the term "Earned Run." They're all earned in my book. Strike the batter out and you don't have to worry about your 3B throwing the ball in the stands. Awesome write up and the effort put into the research is great. Though this was writen right in the article: "So the difference is...defense? Luck? Secret sauce?" The strikeout takes away any unknown variables associated with defense or luck. Secret sauce? Well only Clay Buchholz knows, and he's not telling.
  17. Rizzo's deal only bought out three free agent years, the last two of which are team options. The last option year can also be voided if he is traded. Additionally, escalators can drive the contract up to $73 million. Hard to see any reason Rizzo wouldn't be interested in this deal.
  18. Parmelee's struggles are at the same time being accentuated and minimalized by the solid play of Arcia and Morneau. It's probably going to take a pretty severe and rapid increase in production or he might get labled a goat and never be able to shake it wearing a Twins uniform.
  19. I expect the Twins to do a lot of this, but not anytime soon. They need to be smarter about it though. Span and Hunter were the only players they used this technique even close to wisely on. As noted in the article, Mays and Blackburn were busts and Eric Milton was barely better. The busts were a little troubling, but all that cost was lost money. The Twins also did this with Mauer and Santana, two young elite players. Yet the Twins only bought out one free agent year. They needed to buy out more than one, or get multiple option years. What were they thinking? The Twins should have had Santana under contract or had options on him until 2010 and Mauer should not have had the leverage to negotiate a new contract only two years later. Span's deal worked out for the Twins but they also only bought out one free agent year which is actually an option. I believe the Twins bought two free agent years on Hunter, though it was still only a four-year deal which led to more consternation and trade rumors only two years later. This four-year extension crap needs to be scrapped. If it means waiting an extra year to help mitigate the Twins extreme risk aversion, fine, but buy out more than one free agent year please, they have the money now.
  20. I think it is this mostly. The Pirates were the ones supposedly to sign Sano, the Twins were a dark horse in that contest. I remember hearing the Twins attached to the other Cuban defector, OF Darial Alverez, but he does not fall within the rules of the International budget. I'd suspect the tight-lips would apply to guys who would need to be signed out of that pool. Games surely are being played.
  21. And the relievers are the strength of the staff.
  22. Yet your avatar provides compelling evidence.
  23. So the Phillies signed German 17-year-old Julsan Kamara. I thought the Twins had the market cornered on German prospects. He's an outfielder though, I guess the Twins can focus their International budget elsewhere. Has anyone heard any updates on Aledmys Diaz? Is MLB going to take it's sweet time with the age investigation and cause him to wait an extra year to sign regardless of the findings?
  24. Did anyone else notice that despite the Twins efforts to get groundball pitchers this year they rank 23rd in GB%? Also of note, of the bottom 15 teams in GB%, 8 have winning records. Is it possible the Twins are succeeding partly due to an over-estimation of the rotation's ability to get groundballs, when in fact groundballs would have been a negative variable?
