  1. Can't argue with that, unless someone else thinks grabbing the 2nd best HS catcher at #4 is a good move.
  2. Jason Churchill at ESPN wrote about the 2nd tier of college pitchers. I guess he mentions Manea, Stanek and Eads. The article is summed up at MLBTR and it says that Churchill states Manea would likely be the first of the second tier to go (duh) and he could go to the Rockies at #3, the Indians at #5 or the Red Sox at #7. I'm curious why he does not think he is a possibity for the Twins at #4. Is it due to the team's track record with drafting position players, or does he know something we don't. It's an insider article and I'm not paying ESPN any more than my cable bill dictates so I don't have more info on the piece.
  3. I didn't realize I posted this on the relief pitcher page, perhaps I should move it. Thanks for the additional info. It's puzzling, I hope Churchill is just blowing smoke and guessing.

  5. Since Pelfrey has 5 years of service time, if he is DFA'd, clears waivers and refuses a minor league assignment, the Twins are on the hook for the remainder of his salary. So Pelfrey likely would refuse the assignemt. Surely no team is interested in him with his $4 million contract which they would be forced to pay if they claim him off waivers, but he likely would test the waters to see if someone will take him at a prorated portion of his contract with the Twins paying the rest.
  6. As much as I like Price, and as much as I think Price would make this team instantly legit, I would bet good money that Terry Ryan would never do this. To make this trade viable, Ryan would also have to sign Price to a long-term extension and he would never give a pitcher a contract like the one Price would require. And yes, the Twins can call up a player from any level they chose. Though rare, there has been a history of some players skipping the minors alltogether. While a Sano call-up this year is not an impossiblity, I wouldn't set the expectations too high, getting to AAA this year would even go against the grain for the Twins. Buxton almost surely won't get called up. The Twins have a track record of keeping HS drafted players in the Midwest League for an entire season regardless of production. Buxton getting to Ft. Myers this year would be a rare occurance within this organization, though I think we may be in luck with that goal actually. Thanks for the Sano updates.
  7. Yup, I understand why he got 5 starts last year, but there is depth this year. It may not be proven depth, but there are options. You'd probably want to give Walters another look first and hopefully Albers too.
  8. I like Stewert and would be fine taking the risk, but he doesn't sound quite like a Bundy or Taillon. If the Twins took him and he busted, I would fear they may be scared off from drafting another HS arm high in the draft for the foreseeable future. In other words, I'm not afraid of drafting a bust, but I'm afraid of the how the Twins would react if they do.
  9. I don't think these things are unrelated. I think the internet age has absolutely driven the immediate gratification expectation that is prelevant in our society today. As such, it has also expanded the forums in which we can voice our expectations loudly and often.
  10. Well Jon Heyman seems to think the Astros liked their underslot payment stratagy from last year and doesn't sound convinced the Astros are a lock for a pitcher at #1. Of course even in the unlikely event they pass on a pitcher, the Twins would still need to convince Colorado or Chicago to follow the same path.
  11. Good write up. Kelly survived during a the terrible stretch but that began nearly 2 decades ago now. We are in an era where managers in all sports have a much shorter leash and I think non-coincedentally we are in an era with an explsion of media outlets and fan interaction. As beloved as TK was, I don't think he would have survived 1993-2000 if there were so many venues for fans, bloggers, and journalists local and national, to point out every fault. I think you're right that Gardenhire is safe, in fact if this team finishes at .500 he may get an extension longer than he has received in the past. However, if things go sour, say +90 loses sour, I can't imagine he has a leash as long as Kelly's. They just don't make them in that size anymore.
  12. Hicks connected with his 4th HR of the season last night to match his his short season total from the year previous. Unfortunately his strikeouts have increased over the past 6 games as he has wiffed 11 times including 5 games with multiple strikeouts.
  13. A related question; are you able to retroactively award Bill Smith an error for signing Nishioka?
  14. Adam Johnson WAS the safe pick. He was the near ready college arm. I don't remember the draft chatter (it was 2000, was there such a thing?) but 5 of the next 6 pitchers taken were HS arms. None ever appeared in a MLB game.
  15. If this was the NFL draft people would likely be saying this is a bit of a smoke screen hoping to push him lower. If I was the Tigers, I'd tell my scouts to give reports like this hoping he falls to them toward the bottom of the first. Heck, I'd hope the Twins scouts would do the same and hope to push him into the second. He hasn't been pitching well, but what I'm getting at is the good stratagy is to tank his value.
  16. I'm all for my pro teams taking chances, so I'm game if he looks to have the most potential.
  17. It just seemed to me the biggest question mark with Buxton was his competition, while scouts are picking apart these guys' swing and defensive abilities. The numbers are pretty eye-popping but fair or not, these guys are getting more criticism than Buxton did last year.
  18. These guys but up some pretty nice numbers but no one is raving about them despite the stats. I don't think the Twins will be picking from this group.
  19. On Pelfrey: "I think he'll be fine," Ryan said. "He's one of the best workers, he's got great make-up. I guess I should expect him to struggle a bit out of the chute because of where he's been, but with all that being said there's no reason he shouldn't succeed up here because he's got plenty of stuff." What kind of "stuff?" I've seen no "stuff." His K/9 is 2.8, that generally implies no "stuff." I'll give him credit for the Liriano trade, although I don't disagree with my original stance which was that I would have preferred a singular player with more upside that would not need to be added to the 40-man roster. So far so good with Correia, but this bugs me a little bit: • With his fifth straight start of at least seven-plus innings on Sunday, Kevin Correia has already almost doubled his number from last year (three) in Pittsburgh. As someone in the Twins front office pointed out over the weekend, National League pitchers are often pinch-hit for in the later innings, so it's possible many of his six-inning starts were halted because of that. That's some pretty easy recon to get actually. It doesn't have to be just possible, a simple check of his game logs would tell you if it's a fact. Please tell me this team isn't handing out contracts without doing even simple research. It can't be all scouting.
  20. I'm under the assumption that Gardy was still frozen in shock that Pelfrey's pitch count was only 72 after 5 innings. Duensing should have faced Fielder but I don't believe for a second you people actually think an overachieving team playing .500 baseball would fire a manager in April after a 12 year tenure. Besides, as stated above, for every finger pointed at Gardenhire, two should be pointing at Ryan. Pelfrey is not an adaquately functional pitcher at this point but since the GM paid the recent TJ victim and paid him well, he's been obligated to remain in the rotation which has been killing the bullpen. It's no shock Gardenhire clung to Pelfrey's one shining moment hoping against hope that the guy would prove something last night. And this is coming from someone who has NOT been a traditional Gardenhire defender.
  21. What do you consider "major" power? The Twins have rarely, if ever, had more than one guy with major power in their lineup. I would think that Arcia will develop power in the Cuddyer/Kubel range. Or are you looking for more of the Mantle/Maris modle?
  22. While I agree with this, I don't think this is the motivation behind re-signing their own guys vs signing free agents. Nearly every free agent the Twins have signed in the last two years has come directly from the NL after all. I think for Ryan and the Twins, it has more to do with them over-valuing what they have and under-valuing what other teams have. It's probably not the wisest way to assemble talent but I'd bet a deeper analysis would show this is common thinking among other GM's too.
  23. Last year Sano made an error in 11.6% of his chances. This year it is down to 5.5%. Others have had a few negative things to say such as he has slow footwork or he plays stiff but the results are more than encouraging at this point.
  24. Well I don't know about wasted, but I think the issue arose from the JJ Hardy incident and his ensuing Baltimore success. But... I think the Twins did take something away from the Hardy mess. I believe they are letting Plouffe and Willingham to be pull hitters to take advantage of the soft spot at Target Field.
  25. Anyone have an update about Chargois? Plenty of people do forget that there is an actual human being attached to these porcedures but the Twins have been known to be very indecisive in these situations. When the club forfiets several months of a players career due to passive decisioning the fans and the players should both be frustrated.
