  1. And considering the likelyhood that Herrmann is going to put up better offensive numbers than Butera, it may be hard to justify bringing him back up when another catcher is needed. Perhaps they will trade Drew.
  2. That Rookie League K rate is only average. Look at last years draft class, I'll be a half dozen Twins had +11K/9. Everyone strikes out in Rookie League. If either of these two ever play in the majors it would probably be a surprise.
  3. He had some pop but I can't imagine the Twins view a promotion to AA is in order after a .275 OBP and 25% K rate season. Though I do see the Twins have always had interest in him, looks like he was orignally drafted out of HS by the Twins in 2007.
  4. I assume the Twins wanted some organizational catching depth? I see Kvasnicka has played more OF/3B the last two years than catcher though. Or did Cedar Rapids ask the Twins to trade for him in the hopes of getting his family to buy some season tickets?
  5. I agree that the whipping boy concept is a bit childish, though to be fair, I think most fans know better than to take out their frustrations on the players themselves. Florimon, Correia, Butera, Punto; all have taken criticism but I think most of it is correctly laid at the feet at the GM who misguidedly signs them and/or the manager who continues to play them when they likely shouldn't. Of course if you make the case that Ryan is the whipping boy, well guilty as charged and no clemency requested. He has control over his decisions where as the players have little control over their physical limitations (which still are superior to everyone of us.)
  6. Morneau and the Twins may find themselves back together next year due to the new compensation rules. If Morneau is putting up terrific numbers, surely the Twins could/would/should move him at the deadline for a nice return. However, if he is having a nice year, but not outstanding, the Twins may not be able to get what they expect he is worth. In that case they may very well keep him and give him a qualifying offer after the seasonwhich would entitle them to a draft pick in the JO Berrios range. However as we saw this offseason, Kyle Lohse was good, but not attractive enough to get another team to forfiet a draft pick and Adam Laroche reluctantly took a deal from his orignal club. Instead the Nationals traded the guy who would have been his successor at 1B. Like it or not, the odds of Morneau in a Twins uniform next year are probably higher than we expect maybe 20%. If he is still a Twin in August, the odds go up quite a bit.
  7. It's not a coincidence that most of the strikeout pitchers signed early and the last couple of arms to sign were the soft tossers who were still effective. (29) Teams are moving away from guys who don't put up reasonable K rates, it's not a surprise that Lohse and Saunders were the last two of the higher profile arms to get picked up. Besides, who knows what Boras and Lohse were asking for to start out with. Most people had Lohse ranked as the 3-5th best free agent pitcher, knowing his agent, he likely started out pricing him on par with the 2nd best pitcher if not higher. This is how Boras has always opperated, though surely it turns many teams off. Also, only 3 pitchers signed deals of 4 years or more, only 4 signed deals of 3 years or more. Surely Lohse and Boras had thier sights set on multiple years but teams just aren't doing that for older pitchers anymore. He probably would have been signed by now if a draft pick wasn't involved, BUT he also probably would have been signed by now if his agent wasn't Scott Boras pulling his regular Scott Boras manuevers. There's a reason why Edwin Jackson was last year's Kyle Lohse but now has a new agent. All I have to say is: http://www.whited00r.com/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=6888.0;attach=870;image
  8. It's only one game but Sano does not looked out of place at 3B. I think most people half expected a lumbering Delmon Young-esque awkwardness to him but that is clearly not the case. He's big but his movements are much smoother than expected. He had at least one nice pick where he had to turn his hips toward the dugout then twist and throw to 1B which looked pretty natural. Well natural except for the double pump which I saw him do a couple of other times. He could work on cutting that out of his routine.
  9. 652 direct tv. Dick and Bert, not the Yes network.
  10. Ha, is it wrong that Ryan looks strikingly like Eisenhower on that flag? My mind is blown.
  11. The article makes it sound like the Tigers and White Sox ownerships are against revoking pensions. I wonder what the Twins "comparable" plan is? Probably your average 401K? I can't see the banker Pohlad's being on the generous side of this equation. I'm getting tired of the other teams in the AL Central coming across as a champion of the fans and employees while our Twins do the opposite.
  12. The Twins don't use statistics anyway.
  13. "I think this is a good illustration of how difficult the draft can be." Drafts are difficult, but for most of this century the Twins made it more difficult by seemingly passing on high school pitchers early on. Obviously they are more boom or bust, but the reward can be so much better. Perhaps I'm off base but the perception has always been the Twins will take a safe college arm over HS kids with upside. Looking at the HS prospects the Twins passed on to take Wimmers in 2010 makes my stomach churn. Water under the bridge though. I'm going to assume they learned their lesson considering where they took Berrios last year and Boyd the year previous.
  14. Exactly, I'm not sure why it's hard for people to understand it's an either/or situation. What other options for the 25th spot are people expecting to emerge? I don't get the irrational anamosity toward Colabello's age when the likely other option is 29-year-old Drew Butera. That is unless someone is really, really cheering for 27-year-old Wilkin Rameriz or 30-year-old Brandon Boggs. Or is it possible they are still pining for 42-year-old Jim Thome?
  15. I think we're getting a little ahead of ourselves. Escobar has hardly played for the Twins at the MLB level and Hernandez has yet to do so. I'm not saying Escobar won't be a Twin for five or six years but this is already his last option year. If his bat doesn't develop, five or six years is a long time to waste a roster spot without exposing him to waivers, especially if he ends up getting competition from the likes of Rosario, Dozier and Santana going forward.
  16. Any chance Colabello was passive-agressively punished for playing in the WBC instead of staying with the Twins camp? The 25th roster spot was always going to come down to Butera vs Gardy's request for power on the bench. Colabello seems like an unlikely choice at first glance, but it would not have been a novelty pick, there simply were just few options. I would have to assume the bench bat to counter the Butera option now falls to Wilken Rameriz who is hardly less of a novelty than Colabello. Of course they could decide to sign Thome, or perhaps Colabello's reassignment could be a show of power by Ryan showing Gardy now before he can get public support, that no, he will not get a bat for thebench.
  17. Mauer put a ton of balls into the first row of LF at the Metrodome that year. Those don't even get to the warning track at Target Field.
  18. And the Twins would pay $5.8 million for premium defense at a premium postion when it came to the man Gomez was traded for.
  19. Having an emergency catcher is only one way to go about solving this issue. Moving the remaining catcher behind the plate and losing the DH for a few innings of one game isn't the end of the world either. Having a pitcher hit if it's a low leverage situation is just fine, if not, pinch hit for they guy, what's the huge issue? With no snark intended, is a pitcher batting that much worse than Butera?
  20. What's the over/under on how many swings Mauer takes against Deduno tonight? Assuming 2 or 3 at bats, I'm putting the over/under at 2.
  21. So is it Hendriks and DeVries fighting for the fifth spot, or does Deduno have a shot if he shuts down Mauer and the Americans in the WBC tonight?
  22. When I think of Reusse, I think more of his editorializing and not so much of his deep connections into the Twins front office. Seven of the teams top ten prospects AND Santana AND Tonkin in a two year span? All of them could do it, but I doubt the organization will put themselves in a postion where everyone's on the same arbitration schedule.
  23. Is it strange that I think the Royals will improve because of better offensive output? I think the youngsters will click having now played a couple MLB seasons together. They put a lot of effort and dollars into the rotation but Santana is a time bomb and Shields pitches much better indoors than out. I don't think that rotation is as good as they think it is.
  24. I love Summit and Sierra Nevada as well. My California relatives are from Chico and drink a lot of Sierra Nevada; they wanted to know a comprable beer and I told them Summit. Now when they come every summer they bring a 12 pack of Sierra Nevada and leave with a 12 pack of Summit.
  25. You have Baxendale, Melotakis, Rogers, Duffy, Bard and Powell from last years draft class getting a chance at starting. Is this what you would do with these young men or is this information that you have been made aware of? Within reason, I'd like to see most of those arms from the 2012 draft to get looks as a starter, but I was starting to assume it was just wishfull thinking. Aside from Rogers, Bard and Berrios, I believe the only draft pick last year to get starts was Andre Martinez who didn't dazzle but the Twins did pay over-slot to ensure he didn't go to college. Would you have him with the short season crew, or is the team not likely to keep him in the rotation?
