  1. Why? He's never covered up the million or so leaks abuot A-Rod buying PED's and no one was more upset than he was when Braun got away with his failed test due to an arbitor with extremely questionable decisioning skills.
  2. I think the players are starting to police themselves, that's going to be the biggest key to cleaning up the steriod issues. Michael Cuddyer says he wants to see a 100 game ban for 1st time offenders and Matt Holliday, Dustin Pedroia and Ryan Zimmerman have all spoken out for harsher penalties. All it will take is the clean players to push for provisions in the CBA for teams to be able to void contracts of cheaters or something of that sort. However I don't know how true this is. Would the Yankees really be in discussion with Cano about a long term extension if he was going down? I guess if we start hearing that extension talks are breaking down, I'll buy into this story. Edit: Though, Scott Boras generally likes his superstars to hit the market and see what kind of bidding war ensues. Perhaps he and Cano were trying to get a deal done before the Yankees caught wind of a suspension.
  3. Do you have a link? I've never heard him say that before.
  4. If no one else shows they are worthy of the spot, DeVries can have it if earned, but considering the situation the team is in, at this point I 100% take upside over another back of the rotation starter.
  5. Because the advertising on an ESPN site is rediculously low? I don't really care if ESPN charges, there are plenty of other sources for good baseball discussion but I seriously doubt ESPN would need to rely on insider subscriptions to pay their writers.
  6. This one took awhile. Fangraphs periodicly released the various teams top 15 this offseason, the Twins were last. May was surprising, some of the write ups didn't quite seem right though. They say Hicks will start the season in AAA and have a chance for a late season call up one sentance, then mention the Span and Revere trades and say the door is open for him the following line. I have a feeling they wrote the Hicks article quite some time ago and amended the last sentence to reflect the current situation. I think it likely that many of these were done that way. May being that low was surprising. They reference his high strikeouts and high walk rate, then in the next sentance say his ceiling is a "No. 3, innings eating starter." How many high strikeout/high walk rate pitchers are inning eating #3 pitchers? The high walks usually limits innings and the high strikeouts generally make you a 1-2 or the walks cause you to bust out into the bullpen. Interesting that Polanco got the #9 spot. He passed over some of the bigger names but with a solid season, he'll likely be ranked in the top 10 on everyones list next year.
  7. Harden read this thread thought he was done and booked a flight home is what I heard.
  8. How could there possibly be any indecision about this? Duensing is clearly a bullpen asset and severe starting liability.
  9. As much as we like to throw Buetera in Gardy's lap, I would assume the 3rd catcher is what Gardy is willing to sacrafice to get the big bat. It would be either giving up the 3rd catcher or a middle infielder; I don't imagine they are going to cut back on the bullpen with all the question marks in the rotation. Unless Gardy assumes that Selig will grant the Twins a 26th roster spot. At the end of the day, it's not Gardy's call, Ryan has final say over who breaks camp with the team.
  10. My spidey sense was right, it was not a coincedence that Guerrero was advertising that he would take a minor league deal. Darren Wolfson Tweeted that Guerrero's people did in fact approach the Twins, but Ryan said no thanks. I'd guess they approached the Twins after it became known they weren't interested signing Thome on a major league deal. I wonder if the issue of having a bigger bench bat might cause some discord between Gardy and the front office.
  11. He's not ready, but playing devils advocate: Florimon is supposedly ready (hey take it up with Ryan and Gardy, not my call!). Say he struggles and they send him down, but Danny Santana has already gotten a promotion to Rochester so they move Florimon to New Britain. Let's also say at that time Rosario also gets bumped to New Britain. Which of those two hits better in AA? I don't think it's close, Rosario would put up much stronger numbers. I doubt Rosario's bat is as Florimon-like as you might think. To be clear, he's not ready, but considering what this team has expected from it's middle infielders over most of the last two decades, he's not nearly as far away as some people on this board seem to think.
  12. Darren Wolfson is again Tweeting that the Twins have interest in Thome. He specifically mentions Gardy as interested (no shock) but says not all MN officials are on board. That would seem to imply that some officials ARE on board. I kind of doubt it, I think it's Gardy vs the front office on this one. Thome wants a MLB contract, the Twins obviously are not as willing to give one. Coincedentally(?) MLBTR is reporting that Vlad Guerrero also wants to come back but he IS willing to take a minor league deal. I love Thome, but there's little doubt the right handed Guerrero is a better fit, though neither may be a great fit.
  13. He's been so injury prone in his career. I wouldn't be surprised to see his production slip due to getting hurt.
  14. Seeing as he's 25, I don't think the service time should be as large of a concern. Calling him up now will mean he's younger when it comes to talking about an extension. As silly as it may seem, I find it much more likely that the Twins would be interested in extending a 29-year-old until he's say 34 than they would a 30-year-old until he's 35. It's only a year difference, but the perception of an under 30 pitcher generates positive reactions, while the perception of a pitcher over 35 generates pretty negative reactions.
  15. I didn't realize he didn't have an effective changeup. Did Terry Ryan? I thought it was a pre-requisit for Twins pitchers. Well I guess in this instance we can say that it is better to have Cuellar up at the MLB level. At least he can and has thrown the pitch, hopefully Cuellar can fix a mechanical issue or grip and the implementation of the change will not be something that causes him to be erratic this entire season.
  16. He'd cost the Twins their 2nd round pick, doesn't sound like much, but last year numerically, that pick was about where Berrios went. I wouldn't trade Berrios for what would likely be one cancerous year of Kyle Lohse on a still losing team.
  17. Clearly Mauer. If there was an expansion draft and only Twins organization players were available, Mauer would be the hands down choice. Consider that the team has the youngsters for six years until free agency, while Sano, Buxton, Meyer and company have a high likelyhood of being successful, the odds that Mauer is still a productive major leaguer for the next six years is still higher.
  18. Last year the Twins and Indians were seperated by 4 wins. I think it is fair to say that if the Indians finish more than 4 games ahead of the Twins in 2013, we can conclude that lowering the beer prices was a major factor and the Twins would need to do so in 2014 to once again compete in the AL Central. Seriously though, lower the prices 10% for the season ticket holders? Does St. Peter really think that's going to drive up demand for season ticket packages? Even if it did, the Tribe cut beer prices by 28%; the beer prices in Cleveland will be 37% cheaper than it will be for Twins season ticket holders, way to keep up. Also thanks buddy, nice to know the rest of us individual ticket buyers are still ripe for gouging.
  19. I saw Luke Hughes on MLB network playing in an Australian league playoff game the other week. Too bad he hasn't caught on with another team. Perhaps if he has a good showing at the WBC. Matt Tolbert's with the Phillies I believe as well.
  20. I wouldn't expect his past pace of HR to continue at Ft. Myers, the league generally supresses power. For a lot of guys it increases again at New Britain.
  21. We've been complaining on this board about the lack of middle infield options most of the off-season. Next year there is a possiblity the team will have Rosario, Dozier and Danny Santana all looking like exciting options.
  22. Love Eddie, clearly the new position will likely be the main reason for non-advancement. If he can hold his own at 2B he could move up fast. With his more polished and mature hitting approach, I think it's likely that the Ft. Myers stop will be the one that breaks up the dynamic duo of Sano/Rosario, if only temporarily. I'd expect Rosario to handle the more advanced off-speed and breaking pitches better than the slugger.
  23. Yeah the Cardinals promoted him to AA in pretty quick order last year. He was in the tier of college pitchers last year that was generally thought of just below Appel, Gausman and Zimmer. St. Louis sure has been able to identify quality pitching as of late.
  24. I had Jedd Gyorko in mind.
  25. I guess of the criticisms of Mauer I've heard, uncoachable wasn't one that I've come across much; though I can see how his quiet Minnesota demeanor may unjustly provoke such thoughts. Hopefully he puts some good time in with Steinbach as well. Parker had a great breakdown awhile back showing that Mauer was no longer getting out of his crouch quick enough on SB attempts which made it difficult to throw out runners. Hopefully these new voices can bring some new approaches to existing problems.
