  1. He'll probably be more entertaining than frustrating; when his salary is that low, cutting him hurts very little and benching him is always an option. What a waste though, here's a guy who's going to have 1,000 hits before he turns 28 despite his past anitcs and effort. What could have been with this guy.
  2. I never used the word hate, as a rule I generally don't use that word toward people, nor have I attacked you, the vitriol is coming from your side. I've been called ignorant, unchritable and now prejeduced by you since lunch. As for my reasons for my lack of respect, I've listed those already. I rightly assumed you had a personal connection to the family and appologized that the words said about them wounded, but you're not going to swing the opinion of them on an internet forum by going on the attack. Perhaps they give to charities and maybe they treat their employees decently, but their most high profile venture happens to be one of the states most charished possesions. If they wanted to have an untarnished image, they should have thought about that in their dealings with the one business that is in the media most often. They didn't think that way, or they didn't care, either way they've used the Twins as a weapon to reap huge profits, and all from the pockets of the people who love the team the most.
  3. Oh I forgot, my vote is for #1, though Reusse's hyperbole is annoying. No sane fan thinks any owner would spend unlimited money, nor would any sane Twins fan think the team would spend East Coast kind of money. The hyperbole for option two is also awful. Few say Ryan shouldn't rebuild, most just agree that he didn't need to put such little effort into free agency this year. Way to be objective Reusse!
  4. He wasn't old at the time, he was quite young then. Your defense of the Pohlad's is pretty steadfast, if you know them I'm sorry I've offended and I respect you sticking up for them if that is the case. That being said, I have/had little to no respect for Carl Pohlad. He manipulated the state of Minnesota in every underhanded way he could concieve. He took advantage of it's citizens from the first farm he foreclosed on, to the current tax payers that he demanded more from than he justly should have. As for the kids, hopefully the apples fell far from the tree. That's not often the case with children who were exposed to extreme weath, but I do not know them.
  5. Are you saying he atoned for his sins by donating to charities? He was the villian in The Grapes of Wrath for crying out loud. He was part of the problem long before he was part of the solution. Still wondering why you won't address the disproportionate amount of stadium funding he contributed, you were the one to brought it up originally.
  6. I don't mind public subsidies, but I'd like to hear you justify the fact that the Pohlad's demanded the public pay for so much more than the ownership groups in St. Louis and Detroit? The figures are above.
  7. The Tigers owner Mike Illitch paid for 66% of Comerica park, the Cardinals paid for 88% of the New Busch stadium while the Pohlads only paid 33% for theirs. Illitch paid $175 million for his $300 million stadium, the Cardinals ownership paid $320 million of their $365 million stadium while the Carl Pohlad paid $125 million for his $585 million stadium. The Tigers and Cardinals are the teams the Twins should look to as one is the cream of the AL Central, while the other is the cream of the comparable market-size. As fans we got a bad break. It was good that Carl Pohlad bought the team from the even more mizerly Calvin Griffith but the improvement was not great. There aren't too many good things you can say about a man who made his fortune buying up risky mortgages during the Great Depression so he could immediately foreclose on the unfortunate families as soon as they were a minute late on a payment.
  8. I'd hope Cedar Rapids is his landing spot. It's not a race or anything but a good half dozen or so high schoolers already tasted A ball last year. It's not exactly an excellerated push by putting the #2 overall pick in the Midwest League his second season as a pro.
  9. Ha, I'm not sure that "out over his skis" has ever been used to discribe a baseball player. Perhaps Berrios will assume he's talking about being pulled behind a speed boat.
  10. Yawn, I thought we were contemplating Wade for a second. There's your left-handed 3B complement for Plouffe.
  11. Here's hoping his "swagger" level is of a different variety than Garza's, Lohse's, Young's and Valencia's as the powers that be have already determined that abundant "swagger" does not mesh with the preferred Minnesota conservative demeanor.
  12. His future weight projections have been mentioned as a possible downfall in many of the various write-ups done about Arcia. Surely it's something to keep an eye on, but perhaps the Twins are being proactive about the matter and making him understand the offseason can affect his body type more adversly than others.
  13. Not to be callous, but he's on a one year minor league deal. I don't see why injury concerns would stop the team from looking at him as a starter if that is the route Harden also prefers. Assuming this team is not going to compete and assuming at some point a rotation spot is needed, the only reason I can see to put him in the pen would be that perhaps Harden as a reliever would have more trade value seeing as teams likely would be less hesitant about his injury track record after proving himself for several months out of the bullpen. Of course he may have zero value if he only has 10-15 appearances before the trade deadline.
  14. The more I think about Mackey's reply the more annoyed I'm getting. He makes it seem like the Twins compensated the budget cuts this year by spending big in the draft LAST year. Heck no, it's the other way around, the Twins were forced to spend big on the draft by virtue of their poor record and in turn cut payroll the following season. So in effect, payroll was cut because the Twins had to follow the MLB slot guidelines. Surely neither the league nor players union would agree to the slot program if they figured teams like the Twins would in turn cut spending on MLB players.
  15. And conversely, it's hard to cut draft spending when you have a high first round pick unless you refuse to sign him. Half of the Twins draft payroll went to one player.
  16. Why? He's never covered up the million or so leaks abuot A-Rod buying PED's and no one was more upset than he was when Braun got away with his failed test due to an arbitor with extremely questionable decisioning skills.
  17. I think the players are starting to police themselves, that's going to be the biggest key to cleaning up the steriod issues. Michael Cuddyer says he wants to see a 100 game ban for 1st time offenders and Matt Holliday, Dustin Pedroia and Ryan Zimmerman have all spoken out for harsher penalties. All it will take is the clean players to push for provisions in the CBA for teams to be able to void contracts of cheaters or something of that sort. However I don't know how true this is. Would the Yankees really be in discussion with Cano about a long term extension if he was going down? I guess if we start hearing that extension talks are breaking down, I'll buy into this story. Edit: Though, Scott Boras generally likes his superstars to hit the market and see what kind of bidding war ensues. Perhaps he and Cano were trying to get a deal done before the Yankees caught wind of a suspension.
  18. Do you have a link? I've never heard him say that before.
  19. If no one else shows they are worthy of the spot, DeVries can have it if earned, but considering the situation the team is in, at this point I 100% take upside over another back of the rotation starter.
  20. Because the advertising on an ESPN site is rediculously low? I don't really care if ESPN charges, there are plenty of other sources for good baseball discussion but I seriously doubt ESPN would need to rely on insider subscriptions to pay their writers.
  21. This one took awhile. Fangraphs periodicly released the various teams top 15 this offseason, the Twins were last. May was surprising, some of the write ups didn't quite seem right though. They say Hicks will start the season in AAA and have a chance for a late season call up one sentance, then mention the Span and Revere trades and say the door is open for him the following line. I have a feeling they wrote the Hicks article quite some time ago and amended the last sentence to reflect the current situation. I think it likely that many of these were done that way. May being that low was surprising. They reference his high strikeouts and high walk rate, then in the next sentance say his ceiling is a "No. 3, innings eating starter." How many high strikeout/high walk rate pitchers are inning eating #3 pitchers? The high walks usually limits innings and the high strikeouts generally make you a 1-2 or the walks cause you to bust out into the bullpen. Interesting that Polanco got the #9 spot. He passed over some of the bigger names but with a solid season, he'll likely be ranked in the top 10 on everyones list next year.
  22. Harden read this thread thought he was done and booked a flight home is what I heard.
  23. How could there possibly be any indecision about this? Duensing is clearly a bullpen asset and severe starting liability.
  24. As much as we like to throw Buetera in Gardy's lap, I would assume the 3rd catcher is what Gardy is willing to sacrafice to get the big bat. It would be either giving up the 3rd catcher or a middle infielder; I don't imagine they are going to cut back on the bullpen with all the question marks in the rotation. Unless Gardy assumes that Selig will grant the Twins a 26th roster spot. At the end of the day, it's not Gardy's call, Ryan has final say over who breaks camp with the team.
  25. My spidey sense was right, it was not a coincedence that Guerrero was advertising that he would take a minor league deal. Darren Wolfson Tweeted that Guerrero's people did in fact approach the Twins, but Ryan said no thanks. I'd guess they approached the Twins after it became known they weren't interested signing Thome on a major league deal. I wonder if the issue of having a bigger bench bat might cause some discord between Gardy and the front office.
