  1. I think the short term solution is just to give Doumit regular bench duty. His bat is better than most of the bench options the Twins typically have, but hasn't that been a concern? It would seem to me that Arcia's bat in the lineup is an improvement and Doumit's switch-hitting, multi-positional bat on the bench is an upgrade. Win on both fronts if you ask me.
  2. Thank you for this post. This is the most frustrating part of the the Twins approach. Every other team has realized the most efficient way to get outs is by strikeout. This season and last the Twins have a team K/9 of 5.84 while the Indians are second lowest at 6.85. The Indians are actually closer to a top 10 team in terms of K/9 than they are to the Twins; the gulf is that large. Even if these guys were limiting hits, having five pitch-to-contact arms is never advisable. The good teams only have one per rotation. Why do they treat the pitching staff this way? They'd never put a lineup together with 9 leadoff hitters. This team is so set in it's ways it fails to adapt to the changing tides in this league. This is a multi-billion dollar industry and leaders like Ryan and Gardenhire belittle the one guy in the organization who deals in statistics. This "old school" way of managing a baseball team is crap. You now have these many tools to evaluate players, USE THEM. I don't know when stubborness became a positive attribute. Adapt or die.
  3. Listening to Dick and Bert talk about Sabrmetrics. Bert got into the Hall because of these stats and then implies they are useless? Surprised Dick said he thinks they are useful. He likely knows more about them than Terry Ryan.
  4. That may require a ton of posting to keep up with the curiosity demand!
  5. I'll keep my draft pick Dalton Hicks.
  6. Exchanging Rameriz for Arcia would likely cause Doumit to be more of a bench bat. Gardenhire was practically begging for a stronger bench all preseason. So it seems to me the Twins want their cake and to eat it to. They want to have an adaquate number of capable bats both in the lineup and on the bench, but they don't want to have any of those adaquate bats to have reduced playing time. Something's got to give.
  7. Arcia likely should not be a regular CF, but let's not forget that the reason he hasn't played much CF the last two years had more to do with the fact that he was playing with Hicks and Angel Morales, two of the most talented defensive players in the system. If Arcia hits in his brief audition, I see no reason why Ryan Doumit would block him. A) Doumit has not been hitting. He has been very fragile in the past. C) Haven't the Twins been searching for a better bench bat this offseason?
  8. And Luis Tiant, though obviously Carlton never pitched a game against the Astros in the Twins uniform and the Blue Jays hadn't been invented yet when Tiant pitched for the Twins. My first thought was Mike Mussina agains the Twins too.
  9. Sounds a lot like the third catcher arguement. They finally put aside that safty blanket.
  10. However this is professional baseball. The goal is to win and I don't know how anyone could argue that after the 2010 season, Slowey should have gotten the 5th rotation spot over Blackburn in 2011. Even if the Twins laid on the lame "clubhouse harmony" BS, it's not like he was off the team, they initially put him in the bullpen until he blew up and got a demotion. If the Twins intent all along was to put him in the bullpen knowing he would stew and complain long enough to demote him, that's pretty dirty and underhanded in itself. Slowey is a widely regarded as a jerk while Blackburn is widely regarded as Gardenhire's good ol' boy from Oklahoma. It's clear the decision was at least made in large part due to personality, is that the best way to win in this league? I don't believe so.
  11. Bowie Kuhn and the other owners should have ran him out of the sport. He had a lot of power though, he was VP of the American League at the time. It goes without saying he would not have gotten away with that now. It just doesn't seem like it was that long ago. Or perhaps it was long ago but I just don't percieve it that way since it happened in my lifetime.
  12. Everything about the French is lazy. Edit: Ha, sorry, just realized your name sounds a bit Frenchy! And Pavano, Marquis, Blackburn, Walters, Swarzak and Duensing. What I wouldn't give for a starter who could manage a 5.0 K/9 right now.
  13. Earlier today I rescued my 1979 Sporting News "Official Baseball Guide" from the hands of my two-year-old. Being curious I checked the Twins section and saw some old Calvin Griffeth criticisms. As they were vague I decided to check online for some original source material. Upon my first try I found what I was looking for, namely this: Griffith spares few targets in Waseca remarks Most of these Griffith anecdotes I had heard before though I never heard them in context, nor did I realize that all these terrible racist and hate driven rants were taken from the same Lions Club meeting. I'll never defend the Pohlads, but this is a nice reminder of what a truely despicable human being former owner and Hall of Famer Calvin Griffith was. For anybody not inclined to check the link, the most inflamatory statement was when he said he moved to Minnesota "when I found out you only had 15,000 blacks here." Sounds like New Orleans was a possiblity previously until he recieved this "good news." So it's nice to know we have our Twins because the previous ownership viewed Minnesota as a racists haven.
  14. Minnesota Twins: Batting 2nd is ... um ... er ... Brian Dozier ... right? - TwinCities.com On how he'll set the batting order: "Once we start, I'll make that final decision," Gardenhire says. "I'll sit down with my staff and our stat guy and see what that computer spits out, and then we'll go from there. If it's coughing, then I'll do it my way." And before that he called Sabrmetrics, Cybermetrics which Beradino, the author says is what Gardy always calls it. This was less than a week before opening day. The "stat guy" is Jack Goin. I find it likely that Goin or someone else was already telling Gardy that Mauer batting 2nd would be best for the team and he was feeling the pressure to do so and did not like it. I can't find an unarchived link for the article about Terry Ryan and Goin from last winter, but Ryan basically said the same thing. He said they had a singular Sabrmetric guy and his trusty intern. He basically said if he likes what they tell him he'll agree to it, if he doesn't like what they have to say he'll do it his way.
  15. Both Ryan and Gardenhire have made comments since the end of last season that make it clear they don't respect Sabrmetrics much and only begrudgingly use them. They have both taken opportunites to belittle the lone advanced metric guy in the Twins front office. Hawk is not the only person who feels this way unfortunately. He's an idiot, but the worst thing he said was that teams should stop using Sabrmetrics and go back to finding guys who want to win. Dumbest statement of the week. So what, guys who Bill James likes don't want to win? Edit: Did anyone see the poll results while Kenny was ranting? The fans watching thought Sabrmetrics were overrated and the only people watching the MLB Network are true baseball fans. I just hope people were voting that way because they don't like Kenny.
  16. Lack of consistancy? His first start was terrible, why would they want that consistantly? While his second start was far from an instant classic, it was still probably the fourth best performance from a Twins starter this year. Two outings and an improvement in the second and the judgements been made. This organization is a mess. I'm awful curious to see what the plan is with Pelfrey and Worley if they don't improve. I'm farily confident there is no plan and they are just winging it. Poorly.
  17. College catchers seem to have a rather high success rate. I'm not retracting my displeasure about drafting a HS catcher until I see D'Arnaud and Mesoraco perform and perform well. Mesoraco has had three years to take the starting gig in Cincinatti and he has yet to do so. He can't even beat out Ryan Hanigan. Looking like a bust at this point. I think D'Arnaud will succeed but it's no sure thing, he's already 24, after seven seasons in pro baseball, you're kind of expected to be where he's at. Also, if John Buck keeps hitting, D'Arnaud is going to be a 25-year-old rookie next year.
  18. Borbon works better for what the Twins would look for from that spot on the roster than Boggs. As a defensive replacement or pinch runner, it's Borbon by a mile.
  19. Even if the Twins don't want to demote Hicks yet, it's not as if they can't replace Rameriz with a superior fielder.
  20. He and Matroianni have similar skill sets, though they bat from opposite sides of the plate and neither are likely very good every day options. If Hicks gets demoted, he'd probably be a decent platoon option for the short term. No need to think about Boggs and Thomas.
  21. I'm just relieved we got a comparison of a white player and a black player. Now Buxton doesn't have to be Andrew McCutcheon and Trout doesn't have to be Mickey Mantle.
  22. No: lead off double => sac bunt to move runner to 3B => game tying single =>go ahead double =>pitching change. Ahead, behind or tied, in a one run game and a man on 3B with less than 2 outs you need someone with a reasonably high probability of a strikeout on the mound. Correia has one of the worst K% in the league.
  23. Molitor also may be underestimating teams' current willingness to suffer through poor defense for an offensively talented player, espcially at third. There is no talk of moving Miguel Cabrera, the Red Sox are going to give Will Middlebrooks every chance as are the Pirates with Pedro Alverez. Heck, even Lonnie Chisenhall is getting his tenth chance and he hasn't even shown any offensive promise. Nor has Chris Johsnson who has found a third team to send him out to play terrible defense every day. It's no secret that teams are counting on strikeouts more (well 29 teams) which takes more balls out of play which in turn minimizes defensive deficiencies.
  24. I'd like to hear more. It doesn't seem likely they'd trade a prospect for a vet at this stage of the rebuild and I wouldn't think he'd have much value if they wanted to trade him for a similar prospect but perhaps you have an angle I haven't thought of.
  25. So Bill Smith will be pushing to trade Alex Meyer and Danny Santana for him in two years?
