  1. Are you saying Norris is the next best thing? There isn't another level of pitcher between the HOF'ers and Norris? Or two or three levels? It's likely going to cost an Arcia+. Playoff hopefulls are going to drive the price up. I'm not interested, the price will surely be high as he is not a rental, though considering this team likely still won't be competing next year, that's hopefully one year of a #3 pitcher in a season that matters. Count me out, a player on a two year deal might as well be a rental as far as the Twins competition schedule is concerned. I'd take him as a free agent but not for a top prospect.
  2. Wasn't the belief that coming out of spring training Porcello had the job for a possible audition for a trade? There were plenty of rumors, that's for sure. I can't say I've seen him pitch a ton, but I'm guessing he's pitching better than his ERA suggests. His K/9 has jumped nearly 2 points while his WHIP has lowered significantly as has his BB/9. He's probably earned that spot now. Even if Smyly had actually earned it going into the season.
  3. There are only a couple of pitchers on the market next year who have few enough age/health/performance questions to recieve deals longer than 2-3 years. Hughes along with Garza and perhaps Ervin Santana and Ricky Nolasco could rangle a 4+ year deal under the right circumstances. Lincicum is too risky performance-wise, Johnson health-wise and Halladay age-wise. Considering that whoever trades for Garza will surely try to re-sign him during the exclusive window before free agency begins, Hughes may very likely be the pitcher who signs the longest term deal next year. I'll be shocked if it's less than four years with five being possible. By default he is going to get overpaid, I don't see the Twins anywhere near him. His agent won't even have to do any work, he is going to be constantly talked about once free agency comes around because there won't be enough quality names to hype and discuss. NY loving ESPN and the big market media have put this guys name on the map even when undeserved and everyone knows (or at least correctly assumes) that his splits away from Yankee Stadium are quite better. Being the youngest free agent pitcher on the market is also going to make him attractive. Even if the Twins did somehow sign the season's "top free agent pitcher contract" what a bummer it would be if it was the year it belonged to Phil Hughes.
  4. Not intersted as the asking price will be high. He's not a front of the rotation guy. Decent pitcher but not special enough for a top prospect. That K/9 would rank 6th compared to Detroit's five starters. I'm tired of the Twins considering these kind or arms "Aces."
  5. I didn't misread, just mis-interpreted. I didn't mean to imply we weren't on the same page, it appears we are.
  6. So the lesson is the Twins should never bid on anyone because the Dodgers can pay more? As mentioned above, the Dodgers already have ton of starting pitching candidates. They can certainly afford him, but perhaps they get to a price where they decide they don't need him considering their depth. The Twins don't have that luxery. Besides, if the Twins offered $60 and the Dodgers countered at that price and got him, isn't that a victory making another team pay $10 million more than they originally intended?
  7. If Morneau isn't worth a very good prospect, then aren't teams saying the same thing about him? Do they want to pay $6 million for a not very good player? If the answer is "No," then no trade will happen and the Twins are paying the $6 million anyway and are out the money and the prospect. The contract is guaranteed, the money has already been budgeted, ditching Morneau for a simple salary dump is an awful move if it doesn't benefit the team.
  8. Peter Gammons is reporting that the Dodgers are preparing to offer Gonzalez a 5 year $50 million deal and he'll likely accept. That's lower than we have been speculating. If we assume the Twins would have to pay more, what would it take? 5 year $55 million? $60? It's a lot of money, but really not that pricey if he is your highest paid pitcher, and by a lot. I understand the reports indicate Ryan won't go for it but this is frustrating if true. $12 million per year easily fits in the budget for the next half decade.
  9. GM Terry is shopping his LOOGY. When he asks what he can get for him, every other GM says: http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTlv3FO_v1J56KDDnNNg11CI6TCrevj6rriVdvTXEUw8QdaW6bs Seriously, that was one of the first relevant Match Game images on Google, why is this one yet to be used?
  10. This makes Drew Butera angry. You wouldn't like Drew Butera angry.
  11. I really like Vargas, but really, this is more important to me.
  12. No, your point was clear and valid. I just tried to add a rider to the opinion and my statement may have come across as contrary when it was actually intended as supporting evidence.
  13. I think trading Ryan Doumit may be a necissary deed for accomplishing many of these tasks. If Mauer is going to play less catcher, it would probably be ideal for one of the potential future backups to get most of the left over playing time. Herrmann should get playing time, but perhaps later Pinto. If the youngsters are playing catcher, that leaves Doumit for OF/DH duties, but those spots and 1B should also be reserved for the future guys and Mauer. Even with a hypothetical Morneau trade, I don't see room for Doumit, except on the bench, when Herrmann, Parmelee, Colabello and Arcia are all back in the fold.
  14. I hope the use of your quote for my rebuttal didn't seem too personal, it was just easier to counterpoint that way.
  15. I'm a bit concerned about the non-verbal cues going on here. Morneau seems to be staring intently in Mauer's eyes, but Mauer uncomfortabley refuses to make eye-contact. It seems like the standard morning after awkward moment to me.
  16. Yeah I too don't like the last sentance of that quote, "It goes down to young pitcher needing to understand maintenance on his arm which is not uncommon to power pitchers." In all seriousness, do the Twins, their training staff and coaches understand the mainenance for the arm of a young power pitcher? They have very little experience with them, particularly when a starter is concerned. This makes it seem like Meyer was doing (or not doing) something against the Twins wishes.
  17. Don't they already have a rotation of five? Even without Worley? Albers, Hendriks, Walters, Hernandez and De Vries? Or is De Vries hurt again I can't remember. I'd love to see May get bumped, but I might suspect they'd just recall Vasquez.
  18. Throughout his career, I think Terry Ryan has done a wonderful job of putting together a bullpen. He has never spent big on free agents and he has let plenty of his own guys go, but it rarely matters because he is spot on when it comes to identifying the pieces that make up not only a functional bullpen but generally an elite one.
  19. I love the Twins, I always have and always will, but I admit that my darker urges take hold of me when discussions turn toward the front office. I know this board has lately seemed like it's the Negative Nancy's vs. Twins Appolgists which frustrates everyone particularly those that run this site. After all, we really all have the same end goal for this team. My goal: To periodically (daily? weekly? whenever I feel like it? I don't know, this isn't very well thought out) list something positvie about this organization to help balance out the sometimes negative comments I'm unable to resist posting in other threads. Rules: There are no rules, like I said this isn't well thought out. However I will not attempt to post something too broad or too obvious. After all, it would be boring if I just typed, "I think the Twins minor league system rocks!" or "Miguel Sano hit's the ball far!" Twins Daily pessimists, please feel free to join me! But be warned, this is a negativity and snark free zone. Violating this one term will cause banishment and forfeiture of all property, deeds and parental rights. Though I'm not sure what kind of lawyers the Twins Daily staff has on retainer so parts of that are still up in the air, can a mod get back to me on that?
  20. Well your thought likely means more to the long term health of the team. I'm just in cynic mode today due to Reusse's piece, so I looked at it from the glass half empty point of view. Trying. To. Shake. The. Negativity!!!
  21. Off the top of my head, he may simply help by keeping the other starters off the field. But the same might be able to be said regarding Hicks keeping Thomas off the field.
  22. That's only fair I guess. They did after all recently open up their wallets to install a top notch, inovative and agressive front office.
  23. I don't think Tseng has officially signed but sounds like it will be the Cubs. Were some of the guys the Twins signed in the 20-50 range? I thought Diaz was the only guy of any repute.
  24. Hicks' first game at Ft. Myers was a 1/4 night. The hit was a 2 run HR. He struck out one time. Nice start.
  25. I'll bet Polanco will be on many lists by the end of the year. If he was at SS right now he almost surely would be. These guys love them some SS. All could make a case though, promotions before the end of the year could help too.
