Right, so coinciding with real estate losses and then increasing interest rates. In other words, the kinds of debts and losses their PRIMARY ventures would incur. The debts are likely only baseball related because they put Twins LLC down as a partner in these other non-related businesses. But plenty have suggested that the Pohlad's were only looking to sell the Twins to gain liquidity due to the current struggles of their other real estate businesses. Makes sense they'd try to also make a prospective buyer eat some debt from those same businesses that they care more about than the Twins.

Opening Day Roster Taking Shape?
nicksaviking replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Yeah, they may not, but they are not being given full opportunities to show they can't do it any longer. It would be different if they were bringing in GOOD free agents that they had to climb over and out perform but they aren't. Bader, France, Vazquez, Margot, Gallo? Those guys aren't required to 'earn their keep' but they give long leashes to broken down vets, even when it's clear that nobody else wants to roster them.- 46 replies

This is all really dumb and also really expected. It's my favorite team so I shouldn't laugh at the ineptitude, but I'm going to anyway. What were those two radio stations the Pohlad's bought for Joe to manage that he quickly ran into the ground? If they made a Twins jersey, but with those radio call sign letters on it, I'd probably buy one.

Opening Day Roster Taking Shape?
nicksaviking replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Yeah, Wallner was in my core-4. I would have liked to put Miranda, Larnach, Jeffers and even Julien in that group, but the team keeps going out if it's way to show they they'd rather give guys who'll likely be out of the league in a year or two at-bats instead of those players.- 46 replies

That would be nice, but it won't die, it will just morph into a reflection of our society. There will be oligarch teams that have all the money and take all the good players, and the blue collar schools whose student athletes will totally get screwed over when the big schools take all the TV money, attendance drops at their games and school leadership decides that the sport doesn't make the school enough money so they just start cutting the programs. The smaller, more obscure programs first, like swimming and soccer and dance teams. You know, the ones that had nothing to do with this mess and don't deserve it.

I have to disagree. This off season looks an awful lot like that era of the Twins. They were always signing Butch Husky's and Otis Nixon's and Quinton McCrakon's. Guys who at one point had some name value but now were just veteran filler for the sake of being veteran filler. Ty France and Harrison Bader are basically the exact same caliber of free agents they were always cycling through, but that history has already forgotten. And at the end of his tenure, Tom Kelly showed NO patience with the young players who didn't perform. But unlike Rocco Baldelli, he also showed no patience with the veterans who didn't perform. Therefore he didn't cut off his nose to spite his face; he gave the young guys reps because it was clearly the best answer for the long term.

Yup, my 14--year-old and I watch it. Pretty solid.

Definitely the right thing to do. It is going to kill the current system though. Just look at the NCAA tournament. The lowest seeded team left is a 10 seed? And it's Arkansas in the SEC with John Calipari as coach? Football and basketball will not be very competitive in five years. There will need to be one league with about the top 40, maybe 50 big spenders. Schools like the U of M are going to have to hook up with the lesser spenders. Which sounds like saying they're cheap, so maybe I should instead say, schools and states that prioritize spending money on things that actually matter.

Opening Day Roster Taking Shape?
nicksaviking replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I also don't get the team's reported desire to keep Castellano. Is it just to save the Rule V down payment they were forced to cough up? This organization has NOT suffered starters or relievers with control issues. Why would they make an exception for Castellano? No way they think they can 'fix' him, that's almost always a fools errand. They don't even draft guys with control problems they have to 'fix', they just avoid those pitchers all together or run them out of the system early if they don't show the ability. Mostly I've been negative, so I should clarify that the previous paragraph was actually a complement and an endorsement of their pitching decisions. Stay true to it, let Castellano go.- 46 replies

Opening Day Roster Taking Shape?

And late in the season. I'm still a Royce Lewis believer, but even with him, this club looks to have about 4 players I'm happy to plug into the top or middle of the order, and than about a dozen guys you want hitting 8th or 9th.- 46 replies

Oof, what shape is that? A pear? This might be the least inspiring offense this franchise has run out there since 2013.- 46 replies

I'm not a huge fan of the 'cult hero' players anymore. Even the actual hero players can be a chore to deal with on this site. You have to walk a tightrope if you want to say something less than flattering about Astudillo or Dobnak. But if you have any intention of being critical of Eddie Rosario or Max Kepler, you might need to think about going into witness protection. Man, being a fan pre-internet was waaaaaay easier.

I wouldn't call it a sweet spot. If you can draft and develop, you should be giving these low wattage free agents 600 PAs a season combined. If you can't or won't draft and develop your own players, you need to sign high wattage free agents.

Thanks, it will likely be the same thing I'm always doing though; stump for more offense. Also, hahahaha, of course it was the dreadful White Sox that signed Brandon Drury!

Lol. Yeah, and overall, he was probably a good manager who continually got stuck with subpar talent. I'm sure playing not to lose ends up being a self preservation tactic at some point. I'll bet outside of his expansion Expos, his teams probably rarely finished in LAST place.
-
Mauch sounds most likely. I doubt John Wooden ever played a close game in his life. Sorry, playing not to lose instead of to win is passive and cowardly in my book. Take a chance and script every one of your games to win.
-
To be clear, I don’t trade Vazquez because I think it improves the club; I think any improvement is negligible to negative, but not impactful to the team record. I trade him to force Baldelli out of his zero-ceiling comfort zone, which I do think can impact the record. He has to start being more concerned with winning games as opposed to being concerned with losing games.

I'm not against having a good outfield defense, I just don't think it should come at the expense of a good offense. How many fewer balls per week actually land for hits if you have a good defense compared to merely an OK defense? One? Maybe two? It just doesn't make up for the lack of extra hits and runs you give up by prioritizing a better offense. Go ahead, put together a good defensive outfield, but also make sure it's a good offensive outfield. That should forever and always be the priority.

This is scary: https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/report-aaron-rodgers-is-a-possibility-in-minnesota But I don't think I buy it. I have never heard this reporter tied to anything Minnesota news. She's a ESPN/The Athletic reporter out of New York. This sounds like garbage being pushed by Rodgers' camp.

non-Vikings NFL off season news
nicksaviking replied to gunnarthor's topic in Minnesota Vikings Talk
No Rodgers and no Wilson for me. I don't really want Cousins back either, and I wouldn't give up a pick for him. -
I'm still shocked Jones didn't miss a game last year. The way these things work, it probably means he starts missing games by week three next season. I'm all for getting a dynamic RB early in the draft.

non-Vikings NFL off season news
nicksaviking replied to gunnarthor's topic in Minnesota Vikings Talk
Rodgers loves attention, I could see him drag this out a long time just so people keep talking about him. Of course the teams that want him could decide to move on. But I have a feeling the Cousins/Atlanta dynamic is so quiet because Atlanta is waiting to see what happens with this two peers, then they'll try to shop Cousins to the desperate teams. Honestly, if I was an objective GM, I'd probably rather have Cousins over both Rodgers and Wilson though.
