  1. He also said: "It's not fun to watch the game for the sake of watching the game." Not that there's a rule that owners have to be more than casual fans.
  2. I think the sale of the team in 1984 was continent on the Pohlds drafting him.
  3. Considering basically 23 of the 25 players are always brutally terrible and ineffective at the same time, I'm about to throw every individual stat in the trash and chalk 2016 up to some systematic undiagnosed and contagious mental disease. It would seem mathematically impossible for this team to have the 23 worst players in the whole league. Hazmat suits and quarinteen are in order. No more prospect call ups until the antidote is found. Keep. Them. Away.
  4. Maybe. I wish I hadn't used the word bright. I really meant quick witted. From most accounts George W Bush was pretty intelligent despite his Billy Madison-esque responses to questions. The responses here sounded similar to me.
  5. They picked more HS than normal, so I'm guessing they plan on signing fewer than normal, which is OK with me. Quality over quantity is my preference.
  6. And to me, it didn't sound like he was condescending or even choosing his words carefully. He mostly sounded unprepared and perhaps not too adept at speaking off the cuff. There was a time you could toss a token interview to a kid, a student newspaper or a small town reporter and no one would ever know or care. Now is not that time.
  7. I have wondered for some time if drafting Hicks in 08 had any impact on their decision in 09. Using their first pick on projectable HS centerfielders in back to back years is probably counter intuitive. Even if that did play a part in the decision, Hicks was a great upside pick in 08 and even if they hadn't just picked him, Gibson was also very tantalizing, he definitely fit the Twins profile. If we saw the Twins draft board that year, I wouldn't be surprised if their top four values were Strasburg, Leake, Minor and Gibson.
  8. I agree that his responses can easily be taken out of context. On the other hand, he did a lot of that himself by saying barely-sensical things like this: The importance of winning is so highlighted in our market, it takes the fun out of the actual game. and this It’s not fun to watch the game for the sake of watching the game. Sooooo, fans wanting to win takes the fun out of the game, AND it's not fun to watch a baseball game just for the sake of watching a baseball game? Exactly what is the correct way to enjoy a baseball game, are there other options? My take aways from the two recent Jim Pohlad interviews: 1) He may not be as bright as we might hope. 2) He isn't as seasoned at giving interviews as more experienced Twins personnel. 3) He almost certainly underestimated the journalistic skills of an 11-year-old.
  9. I hope he's signable, but I'll gladly take the extra pick next year if he's not.
  10. Every team is honoring Ortiz, the Giants just did it and there are no ties there. I'd think if all 29 teams BUT the Twins did it, it would reflect quite poorly on the club.
  11. Smart strategy if this team has truly embraced their cellar dweller status. If they can't sign all of these guys, well it's only going to make their already large 2017 draft pool even larger.
  12. I like the handful of lotto tickets approach. Going the "safe" route never works outside of a very few can't miss guys who have gone 1-1 with a bullet, no one is actually a safe pick. Get the highest ceiling guys available regardless of level. It's not like the Twins need guys who will be up in the next couple years, they still have high-ceiling young guys for nearly every position that need to audition as it is.
  13. *****Moderator Note***** Let's stay on topic here, this is a draft thread.
  14. First two picks out of HS. Can they both be signed for slot or less? Or are we looking at college kids the rest of the way through round ten?
  15. I don't doubt your take, but that doesn't encourage me much. Jerks can be good at baseball too.
  16. No clue what this team will need in 4-5 years. If the were picking a hitter, I just wanted the best one. No clue if he's it but screw position, it's too unpredictable.
  17. I agree with most of Reusse's complaints, but he should have left the draft stuff out. Complaining about draft picks numbered 30+ is almost always ridiculous and I'm sure he knows that. However I'd guess he also knows that the average fan does not know the extreme long odds of picks outside of the top half of the 1st round and he is counting on that to help stir the pot more. His diatribe would have been just as effective without playing up the dubious draft angle. No need to manufacture rage, there is plenty of the legit stuff available.
  18. Yes, but many times teams save some of their cap to overpay HS kids in the later rounds to try to keep them from going to college.
  19. Teams don't seem to be against intra-division trades anymore, but in the case of a talented guy like Ventura, they may be.
  20. Interesting. "Off field" issues didn't stop the Twins from drafting Gonsalves, though no two issues are the same. Even if it's not Groome, I'd still go BPA sign-ability be damned. In every other pro draft, teams trade picks, both up and down in that draft and in future drafts. MLB has a unique quirky caveat about getting a free pick the following year if you can't sign one of your top guys, the Twins should really take advantage of this. The NFL and NBA expect their picks to play right now, yet they still trade for the rights to future picks. In baseball, a guy you pick in 2018 could still beat a guy drafted in 2014 to the majors. Some day I think a smart team is going to come around and de-value the recency of their picks in exchange for the ability to hoard picks for a particular draft thus being able to play puppet master and pull all the strings.
  21. If Groome is available at #15, I'd like the Twins to think about taking him. Heck, if the Twins' BPA is on the board at #15 I'd take him, sign-ability be damned. The Twins aren't totally cap-strapped and can create some flexibility, with over $8M to spend. With the success rate of guys picked after round 10, they can draft 30 college seniors and offer 5K to all of them for all I care. Even if they can't get a deal done, they'll have a top 3 pick next year and #16, then they can pull all the shenanigans the Padres, Braves and Phillies are pulling this year. If the Twins had #1 and #16 next year, they could likely get two top 10 guys; I would be more excited about that than whomever they would have otherwise gotten to sign at #16 this year.
  22. I don't trust anyone at #15, so it's a great position to gamble. There isn't a safe pick out there, and I'd probably be upset due to a low ceiling if there was one. If Quantrill has the most upside, and I'm not saying he does as I'm just an armchair fain, I'd take him. I don't care much about injury history or lack of recent playing time, it's a crap shoot anyway. I'd also think the only reason Quantrill hasn't pitched this year is simply because guys coming back from TJ surgery tend to be rusty and he'd prefer not to audition at all than audition with rust.
  23. Hey, listening on the radio and Kintzler's interview with Corey and Danny also earned him a $100 gift card the Continental Diamond. Things are going aces for this guy!
  24. So who had Brandon Kintzler as the Twins closer before the second week of June?
