  1. Personally I'd like to see him in the pen regardless of where his velocity is at. I think he could be good back there with his limited repertoire and I'd rather give some of the younger guys a shot at the rotation. I'd like to give two of May, Berrios and Mejia a shot at the very least. I don't really like having 4 vets in the rotation for a rebuilding club.
  2. Phil's velocity dip occurred in 2015, not last year so I'm not sure if the surgery is going to improve that, but his off speed pitches haven't been terribly good for awhile now either which typically is a problem for starting pitchers. However as he saw with his former teammate Mariano Rivera, a guy can be OK in the pen with a fastball and a cutter. Maybe he can mix his curve in once in awhile or Allen can work with him and he can try the changeup again. Either way, I like him in the pen assuming the move helps increase his velocity as it often, but not always, does. The Twins don't have a closer now anyway, if he's healthy that should be an attainable goal for him. Also, with the sudden frenzy on relief arms, his salary would barely look out of place if he did a decent job back there.
  3. It would be nice to think the Twins, as opposed to most teams, have a better grasp of TOS recovery and how to gauge how the player will respond seeing as they have Phil Hughes. Maybe they don't like what they see from Phil right now. Or Ross may have no interest in the Twins.
  4. I think if they wait much past March 31st, they're going to have fans and a clubhouse full of guys asking the front office what the hell they're doing and why they didn't improve the club from what it was last year. It was pretty much an annual right of spring for us Twins fans (and some less than thrilled players) who for about a decade had a team that seemed to have no end of youthful talent but too much fence straddling from management to use it to fill the remaining holes that were keeping the team from truly being elite.
  5. Right, but a GM in that position could instead just add an aging Rondell White and a Tony Bautista to put them over the hump. No need to go crazy or anything with a better player like Dozier when White and Bautista will do.
  6. Ha, yeah remember when everyone freaked out because Obama wanted to keep his Blackberry?! If he takes a backseat, he's going to be a backseat driver for sure. I can't for a minute see another country or world leader make a critical statement regarding the US or US leadership without him throwing a fit and making things worse. The US and US leadership get criticized globally all the time, and often justifiably.
  7. I hated the Ramos/Capps trade and I do love getting new prospects. However Capps had a track record of being a pretty solid pitcher previous to the Twins getting him. The chances of him paying off were/are much higher than De Leon alone, who has done nothing but get torched at the MLB level and at least in my opinion has questionable velocity, repertoire and durability.
  8. I'm starting to think that if the Twins can't trade Dozier this off season, they should perhaps showcase him at 3B a bit this year. While the saturated 2B market is hurting the Twins ability to move him, he and his agent may find it agreeable to add the position to his resume seeing as Dozier will be trying to market himself in two years as well. Also, on the days that Sano might DH or have the day off, an infield featuring Dozier at 3B, Escobar at SS and Polanco at 2B might be the most ideal defensively anyway. If Dozier can cut it at the hot corner that is. The 3B market is also saturated of course, but flexibility at two positions surely is better than only one.
  9. Sherlock last night certainly seemed like a finale. If so, it was OK as far as finales go but that's not saying much since most are a let down. This one seemed less like a Sherlock episode and more like a Saw movie. It was OK I guess but not great and I'd bet if I re-watched it much more closely there would be a ton of plot holes and continuity issues which you don't want to see in a show like Sherlock. It was a good run, I think the show can end now. I'm guessing the leads are much too busy to even think about doing another series at this point anyway.
  10. BA had an interview with Hunter Greene. It's too early, but I suppose he's the horse I'm backing presently. http://www.baseballamerica.com/area-code-baseball/area-code-conversation-hunter-greene/#HmDgqo4cxW2JrPPS.97 In his off time he likes to fish, so sounds like a really solid fit for Minnesota.
  11. True, and that makes me happy. Of course hypocritically I'd be full of piss and vinegar had it been Minnesota who told the Vikings to get lost.
  12. Castro hasn't been above 88 OPS+ in three years, he's been a pretty poor hitter for awhile now. I'm also not saying the Twins gave Florimon a short leash, but everyone here did certainly Drew Butera as well. But OPS+ really doesn't matter when it comes to overall fan satisfaction. Most Twins fans don't know anything other than back-of-the-baseball card stats. If Castro is hitting .210 you can bet Twins fans will be calling out the front office in short order. But really, all I was trying to say is that he's not setting a statistically high bar for Garver to clear.
  13. Maybe, but that was the thought when the Oilers left Houston and the Browns left Cleveland. I don't recall if there was any kind of political hustle for new stadiums when the Colts left Baltimore or when the Cardinals left St. Louis, but in all four cases either local grass roots efforts were made to get a team again or another business person quickly realized the financial benefits of filling the void and the NFL was more than happy to join the push to put a team where an existing fanbase was accustomed to and was ready to embrace a team. Baltimore was the only city to have to wait more than a decade but even their wait was only 12 years.
  14. One down... http://money.cnn.com/2017/01/16/media/kfile-crowley-out/index.html
  15. Sterling doesn't own the Clippers anymore which suggests the Spanos family doesn't have to own the Chargers forever either. Anything can happen, I'm just guessing that in the not too distant future the Spanos family may find that renting from the Rams in a luke warm LA market isn't nearly as profitable as they hoped. And if they are sold, it probably wouldn't be surprising if someone pops up who wants to be viewed as a white knight with grand plans to bring the Chargers back home. Goodwill from one of the countries largest metropolitan areas is probably worth quite a fortune itself. I'd guess that if the time comes, Kronke will be more than amenable to "helping" them leave LA and reclaiming the market all for himself.
  16. Moderator Note: Keep the discussion away from personal attacks and dismissive insults. I have edited a couple of posts as opposed to hiding them entirely as most of the content is acceptable. However let's not make this debate combative; nearly everyone is on the same side in that most think Dozier should be traded, the disagreement is only on what is an acceptable return. This shouldn't be contentious.
  17. I thought the Castro signing was just fine, but mostly for the message it sent rather than for the actual player, much like the Ricky Nolasco signing. It meant the team was at least willing to go outside it's comfort zone to fix a huge problem. I wonder how long the fans will be satisfied with Castro if his bat is as poor as it was the last several years in Houston? We always discuss getting defensive first players for defensive premium positions but then I harken back to how we gave Pedro Florimon about the shortest leash in Twins history. Anyway, all that's to say that if Garver can hit and catch, I don't necessarily think Castro is going to block him. Also as nytwinsfan suggested, they'd make for a fine platoon.
  18. That was my belief heading into this offseason and I said as much multiple times. However I don't think that's anywhere close to a stone cold certainty anymore, not because Dozier is going to improve his stature, but because there is no demand now. His value is going to increase or decrease mostly due to demand, not performance. Also, we have so many people saying we have to jump on this offer of De Leon plus nothing/minimal pieces. Why don't we just slow down and wait until March? If Dozier is the Dodgers preferred target, they'll come calling back to the Twins before they do anything else at 2B.
  19. https://mobile.twitter.com/RealHughJackman/status/819883222138023941 Jackman tweeted a synopsis of the film. This totally sounds like El Dorado/Rio Bravo, that sounds great to me. Set on the Texas/Mexican border, this is going to be a modern day western.
  20. No thanks on Wood, I want less sinker ballers not more.
  21. Sure but that's because he's going to play until he's 60.
  22. No, that is an assumption. De Leon isn't some magic pill, he still has a high probability of busting. That's why the Twins would be doing themselves a disservice by not hedging their bets with additional pieces with a reasonable chance of being useful players.
  23. I'm not assuming anything, including what the market will do. I just know the market never stays the same. No one's ignoring risk; those willing to walk away are accepting it, I won't speak for others, but this doesn't appear to be a big risk as the reward isn't very big. If this is the peak, then it's not much different than the valley, I don't see any championships from up here with this return.
  24. Those have long been arguments made by those that think the NCAA should pay their players anyway. This sounds like the immorality of the NCAA but with a paycheck instead of a diploma.
  25. I don't mind asylum for people coming from persecuted areas, but Cuba today isn't quite Cuba from days past, at least not from my understanding. Though I think many of the Latin American countries have vast areas of violence and insecurity. I'm OK letting people stay as opposed to sending them back to dangerous areas, especially the kids who will then have a high probability to end up perpetuating the dangerous situations.
