  1. What are the odds De Leon ends up a #1 or #2? Maybe 10%? The Twins odds of getting the same or better deal later is likely still higher than that.
  2. I get it and that's tempting when you look at it in terms of prospect rankings. But I'm inclined to look at this as a 24-year-old right handed rookie with a 92-93 mph fastball and a very questionable breaking pitch. That seems like a much more risky proposition than most top 30 arms, he doesn't have much margin of error. At least in terms of finding an ace.
  3. We're not sure yet, which I guess is why we wait. I like De Leon but I don't have nearly enough confidence in him to not get additional decent prospects. There's also some future value in not getting pantsed by the Dodgers in front of the whole class the first day of school.
  4. The market has already made it clear that Dozier's value is derived much, much more from demand than his stats. There's no reason to think that it also may not be true come this summer. Anyway, since the offers now are way below his worth, there's little reason not to find out.
  5. I agree that this has merit, but we as Twins fans just had a GM who subscribed to this philosophy rigorously and stated so publicly. We didn't get a lot of deals done this way and the ones that did get done in the last decade or so almost all occurred when the Twins player was at or near his nadir.
  6. Yeah, probably even better than what Alabama plays their players . I do like this idea. I don't like the NCAA and how much cash they make, but I also don't like the push that players should have to get paid, playing in college has always been an optional endeavor. This seems like a pretty good alternate option. If you can play, the NFL will see you, go here if you want to make money and not go to class. I wonder how long until the NCAA does something underhanded to try to cripple this thing?
  7. I can't see both teams lasting long in LA. Since the Chargers are basically renting from LA, I'd bet that they are going to be perennial free agents that the NFL will use to get another market to build a new stadium. Heck, maybe even San Diego decides to do it in five years or so.
  8. My post was in reply to a post saying the Dodgers were wise moving from Greinke because they were only two games from the WS. I was simply trying to point out that a team, particularly a big market contender, shouldn't be satisfied with only being two wins away from a chance to play for the title. I'd think most teams and fans would be wondering what could have put them over the hump the previous year and what might put them over the hump next year. Assuming the status quo of getting within six wins of a trophy isn't the ultimate goal. Thus far the Dodgers have only re-signed a couple of their aging players. Standing pat isn't often the strategy used by winners. Good luck to them if that's what they want to do, but I'd think they'd want to actually try to improve the team as opposed to having to rely on other teams to drop.
  9. Probably don't need two of these, let's discuss this here: http://twinsdaily.com/topic/24675-article-pursuing-jose-bautista-seems-unconventional/
  10. Interesting point. I wonder if they would have only been two wins away from the WS had they signed Greinke last year. With Kershaw going game 2, Greinke maybe gets game 1 and 4? Those two didn't work out so well for LA.
  11. If he was told that it was the Dodgers who had concerns about the small market he should feel obligated to say so instead of insinuating that it was his idea. If it was his idea, it's a brand new bargaining platform that only serves to benefit the leverage of large market clubs and has no basis for concern. If it wasn't his idea but the Dodgers wanted him to pretend it was, he's a shill. Regardless of who actually floated the idea it was bad journalism at the very least in the way it was presented.
  12. http://www.twincities.com/2017/01/11/minnesota-twins-have-set-no-deadlines-regarding-brian-dozier/ Berardino says talks are tabled, not dead. Though the Dodgers will have to come calling if they want Dozier because the Twins are done calling and won't accept their current offer which did not include Alvarez, Buehler or Stewart. Unless some way it instead included Bellinger who wasn't mentioned but assumed off limits, yeah, the Twins should walk.
  13. Sorry I forgot the sarcasm emoji.
  14. I disagree also but to be fair, Cameron appears to be unjustifiably high on De Leon, not down on Dozier. I like the guy but a 24-year-old righty throwing 92-93 and a below average breaking pitch? That seems much more iffy than Cameron describes. Seems like he has him as a top 10 kind of prospect.
  15. Right, should he be disqualified because of his last name? It's not like he's creating policy or heading up the draft strategy. He's teaching guys how to square up a bunt and take good angles rounding the bases. Would anyone be upset if it was Tom Kelly's kid?
  16. How's that Sinatra song go? If you can't make it here you can't make it anywhere....
  17. Minor league deals and camp invites shouldn't be too distressing. Though I'm pretty sure I drove to work this morning past three cops going faster than their two-seamers and didn't get pulled over.
  18. Right, without those three top 40 picks the Twins advantage is gone, they'll lose about $2M from their pool. I can't find 2017 estimates, but in 2016 had the Reds (who had the largest pool) lost $2M they would have dropped all the way down to the 5th highest pool.
  19. But what if it's not really a 2nd rounder? What if it's top a 15ish HS kid who's agreeing to be picked by the Twins because they can pay him more than the other teams in the middle of the 1st round?
  20. I'd think if Alvarez was actually on the table the Dodgers would have leaked it by now knowing it would make the Twins look unreasonable not to take their offer.
  21. Is Dan assuming the Dodgers were offering way more than De Leon? Or does he just think the Twins should have taken De Leon and shut their mouths about not getting more?
  22. I'd rather see the youth in the pen, these guys don't miss bats. No harm in giving them minor league deals though if the front office doesn't over-value experience at the expense of ability.
  23. Keeping Molitor is the only thing on that list that I question, though from the owner's own mouth, that was out of the GM's hands even before he was hired. Neil Allen appears to truly have a difference of opinion on pitching than the crew he worked with last year and Gardenhire is basically just an instructor. Falvey can't force other teams to trade for Dozier; hardly any contenders have a need at 2B. Bautista is a pipe dream at best and frankly hearing that the new guys are calling big name free agents should be welcomed, there's never harm in calling, there can be in NOT calling. Vogelsong and Tepesch are getting minor league deals, there's also no harm there either. This is stuff all teams do.
  24. It happens. The Twins got more for Eduardo Nunez than the Yankees did. Heck, if they catch a break and play their cards right, they might even get something for Brandon Kintzler; the Brewers probably never even considered that would ever be a possibility.
  25. The link was to Cameron's article about De Leon from a couple weeks ago to be clear. Cameron is bullish on De Leon, it's not that he's low on Dozier. But here is where his argument raised red flags with me: "In swapping Dozier for De Leon (and whatever else they can get), the Twins would be turning a relatively safe asset into a risky one, but De Leon probably has more upside than one might think just based on his repertoire. Change-up guys who miss bats without a big breaking ball are often underrated as prospects," I'm going to need some examples before I take his word on it. And lots of them, not a couple of guys who may or may not fit that profile. And what does a "big" breaking ball mean? Does that mean no breaking ball? Or guys who don't use one much? Or guys who use one but get little break? Or guys who use one but it's not a very highly rated pitch? Also, the word underrated is a bit vague in this case. Are they underrated because hardly any guys without a good breaking pitch are overrated? If that's the case it would make any pitcher without a breaking pitch but who even sniffs success underrated.
