  1. Discussion is fine, it's when they turn their assumptions and into fact.
  2. I also think a losing atmosphere and team-wide struggles are contagious. I don't know why, but I'd guess if you are surrounded by dejection and poor confidence you probably can fall victim to a self-fulfilling prophecy of similar nature. I wonder how he would have done had he debuted in 2015 when the team was amped and in a pennant race? 2015 and 2016 were light and day for Duffey who basically got the spot most of us were hoping Berrios would grab.
  3. Why would you think he can't play defense? I've never seen anything to suggest he would be a liability.
  4. Welcome aboard Teapot, hope you continue to share your thoughts on our favorite team!
  5. The dreaded 5/12 seed match up. Yeah, that does sound exactly like something that would happen to the Gophers at this point in their development.
  6. That's the rumors we're hearing, but I think the Rubio for Rose stuff is just speculation and not at all based on anything the front office has been saying. For what it's worth, Rubio is playing as many minutes now as he ever has despite the fact that Thib's supposed PG of the future is already on the team. There's a lot of smoke so I believe the talk that Rubio has fallen out of favor, but at this point without more evidence I'm still taking it with a grain of salt.
  7. I went into Goliath wanting it to be both smart and realistic in terms of how the legal system and those within the profession worked. It wasn't terrible but it seemed like a John Grisham story with a genius do-it-all protagonist lawyer and an evil-beyond-reason villain. John Grisham stories weren't bad, and there was a reason all of them got made into movies, but I think I've been spoiled by TV lately, I wanted something different. Better. Maybe my perspective was simply based on my mood as well.
  8. So what are people's thoughts on the Wolves' interest in Derrek Rose? Speculation is that Rubio could be shipped out which makes sense considering the position redundancy. Rose would be a rental, so basically he'd be acquired to try to get the Wolves in position to get trounced by the Warriors in round one of the playoffs. On the other hand he has an expiring contract which is positive if the team wants to bid on a good free agent next year. If Rubio and Rose are both gone next year, are we cool giving Dunn the keys to the car?
  9. Ozzie Smith didn't get into the HOF because of his bat. The only reason people wouldn't say that he couldn't hit was because he is a beloved icon and it would seem rude to do so. Vielma also has a career .327 OBP, which isn't very satisfying considering there is no slugging to prop it up.
  10. He had a .663 OPS in AA last year which represented a career high. Unless someone wants to single out a stretch or two of simply not having a terrible batting average, I think the opinion that Vielma can't hit is more than valid.
  11. Ah, I get it now, I too never knew if this was a particular type of bun. All rolls are not the same though, we need to differentiate between caramel rolls and cinnamon rolls! Not because both aren't delicious, just so I can be specific when I order multitudes of both.
  12. Fair game, it's President's Day and no commentary in sight! I wish I could take my dog to the office some days.
  13. Let's just combined these two: http://assets.atlasobscura.com/media/W1siZiIsInVwbG9hZHMvcGxhY2VfaW1hZ2VzLzJjNzMxZGVhYmRkM2VmNjFjMWQ2OGVjMmY4N2NhMDFkYmRkMWIyZTYucG5nIl0sWyJwIiwidGh1bWIiLCJ4MzkwPiJdLFsicCIsImNvbnZlcnQiLCItcXVhbGl0eSA5MSAtYXV0by1vcmllbnQiXV0/2c731deabdd3ef61c1d68ec2f87ca01dbdd1b2e6.png http://images.politico.com/global/2012/04/120418_gerald_ford_605_ap_605.jpghttp://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2012/11/03/article-2227196-15D24F59000005DC-222_634x841.jpg Funny how a good ol' dog makes everyone seem like a nice guy, even when we know many of them weren't!
  14. With only assumptions about how his secondary pitches are projected I'm going to go out on a limb: they're probably not going to be required to be great pitches if he's hitting 102 as a starter. In fact a 102 MPH heater is going to automatically make any secondary pitches a pretty decent pitch. Good lord, how early does the batter have to make up his mind on a pitch when it's going that fast? I'd think his secondary stuff would be just fine as long as they can hit the strike zone once in awhile and not also travel 100 MPH.
  15. Well either Vargas was proactive enough to get ahold of one of the game's greatest hitters on his own volition, or the new Twins brass encouraged him to do so. Sounds like good news either way. The philosophies of the past regime can certainly be regretted but are no longer valid stones to be cast at the team. Besides, didn't they already say that they did not want a cookie cutter approach to hitting? This is just reinforcement of what they previously stated. Besides, after what Dozier and Willingham before him have done to the LF seats at TF, it really isn't surprising that the new guys would encourage a pull-happy, upper-cut approach, at least when he's batting right handed. Takes a heck of a lot of loft to get it over the wall in RF when batting as a lefty also.
  16. And while I agree that advanced measurements are likely much more difficult and thus less reliable for HS kids, I would also think that some kind of analytics could be used to compare and asses players to similar draft picks previous. Someone could study results of players based on things that can be measured or assesed like velocity, geography, level of competition, speed, position, age, etc.
  17. I used to be a much bigger reader but fell out of habit a bit with all the good TV these days. I started getting back into it again lately. My wife does photo sessions out of our house on Saturdays so I take the kids and go to the donut shop then the thrift store where we each pick out a new book. It's been fun but I've had a couple duds which were hard to get into. With the new adaptations of The Dark Tower and It, I'm thinking about going back and rereading those; see how they hold up a decade or so since I last read them.
  18. Pretty good place for a soft tossing flyball pitcher to make one last plea for usefulness. I just hope if he somehow comes out of this season with a sub 3.50 ERA my favorite team isn't fooled next year in free agency.
  19. Could a better pitching mind than mine help me understand what Berardino meant when he said Berrios is "working hard to maintain a shorter arm path on all deliveries"? Is he talking about how his arm was visible to the batter from behind his body last year? Will this shorter arm path impact velocity? Just curiosities. I'm confident that Berrios will be much improved.
  20. Cabbage seemed to struggle at E-ton last year, I'd like to see him in CR but not sure if that's likely. I like Blackenhorn's versatility. 3B does seem to have a dearth of prospects compared to the middle infield, it would make sense to move him back to the hot corner especially considering he ended last season at the same level as Palacios and Arraez. That could be a fun trio to watch if they stay together through the system.
  21. I might suggest that plenty of kids think their school sucks while they are at it. Teenagers typically are terrible evaluators of everything so looking at your school experience through youth tinted glasses is probably not the best way to determine the situation. I don't think people truly have perspective on public education until they have kids who are in it.
  22. I only made it through two episodes of Goliath. I liked Billy Bob, but the law aspect had me shaking my head again. Right off the bat it was another show where lawyers have two jobs, their judicial duties plus of course they have to do all the detective work because the cops are incompetent and/or corrupt. I'm not a law expert, but shouldn't the conversation go like this: Client: I know it was listed as a suicide, but I don't think So And So killed themselves! Lawyer: Cool, why don't you go talk to a detective then come back to me when you have a case for wrongful death. Also, maybe tables turned or plots thickened, but I'm kind of over having the bad guy unequivocally bad and spiteful. Maybe there was more that I didn't see but William Hurt seemed villainous for the sole purpose of making Billy Bob's job difficult.
  23. "We’re going to have more of the numbers, but not to drive the guys we go evaluate and who we want.” So that makes it pretty clear that in the past the front office was using stats to justify their already established beliefs and actions. That sounds pretty damning to me. It's actually pretty encouraging that Johnson publicly acknowledged that they weren't using stats to evaluate so much as to justify. At least they should be using them with purpose now.
  24. I fail to see the problem. Just lots of people cheering and waiving.
  25. On Pelosi, I also think she lacks substance, but really I think she was a product of over-compensation by the Democrats after a decade of Gingrich and Hastert. They probably thought they needed a brash and tactless mouthpiece vaguely espousing party mantras and denouncing everything the other side did, as the other party had just had two buffoons doing the same thing prior.
