  1. Had Ryan and his cronies been running congress at the turn of the 1900's we'd be under the fourth or fifth generation of the Rockefeller or Carnegie ruling empires by now. Carnegie gave us all free libraries though, so at least HE would have let all his subjects get educated.
  2. I liked Munnerlyn, it's a shame. Vikings brought in ex Pakcers Lacy and Datone Jones in for looks. Frankly I'm tired of them doing this, let's not give that team more ammunition by letting them claim we take their hand-me-downs.
  3. No I just figured you had looked at some numbers on Profootball Focus or something. If he was bad it wouldn't surprise me, I don't know how good he is, in fact I barely remember him at all. But he can't be all that good if the Panthers gave a terrible deal to Matt Kalil instead. I'd gladly accept a Phil Loadholdt caliber player for RT right about now. Can he do that?
  4. I guess he was decent as a RT prior to moving to LT last year. Hopefully he can still perform. Or kick inside to guard. I'd like it if we knew how the free agent discussions go. How much does Spielman get Zimmer, Sherman and Sporano involved?
  5. That's why you stick the back-of-the-rotation vets in the pen where they can be summoned quickly. Having a couple of vets like Hughes and Santiago in the pen gives the team lots of flexibility without having to go to AAA every week and worrying about wasting options and whom to DFA.
  6. I cut Tonkin/Boshers/O'Rourke etc. I like what the Dodgers and Cubs do, they have no problem sending their journeymen vets to the pen and calling them back to the rotation upon need. Are Hughes and Santiago really much different than Bud Norris, Joe Blanton, Travis Wood, Trevor Cahill, Clayton Richard or Edwin Jackson?
  7. I would have no consternation about the situation any which way it turns out if all things were equal. The issue comes when the guys at the bottom of the pole then have to "earn" a spot even when the incumbent vets are bad. Or worst yet, when the incumbent vet is doing just enough to keep his job but not enough to help the team win. Then you get a Pelfrey-like stalemate.
  8. Thank God we don't have that worry.
  9. It was fairly ambiguous, but I can confidently say that this aspect of Old Man Logan was neither implied nor plausible. There was another explanation(s) which would require spoilers to go into more specifics.
  10. And now that the strikezone is being raised this year there might be a greater emphasis to pitch up in the zone regardless of upper-cut swings.
  11. Sounds like every game might look like they're playing through a rainstorm. The seats will be empty and everyone will be milling around the concourse.
  12. You just have to put in a year there then you are eligible to get hired by the D-backs.
  13. It only looks rare because they are two dis-similar skills stuck together and 20 SB shouldn't be an issue. Had Eduardo Nunez stayed with the Twins all year he likely would have done it. Like I said, I mostly didn't like the phrasing which should be taken with a grain of salt considering it was an off-the-cuff chat. I agree it's not likely, but I don't agree that it's particularly not likely. It's more that I'm being unreasonably sensitive to semantics. But 20 HR from a full-time RH hitter at Target Field just isn't difficult. Looking at the numbers since Target Field opened Michael Cuddyer in 2010, Danny Valencia in 2011 and Trevor Plouffe in 2014 are the only RH hitters with 550 ABs that DIDN'T hit 20 HR. And again, that wouldn't automatically make him a good hitter, or make 2017 a success, it's just the nature of the park he plays in and the side of the plate he hits from. If he stays healthy and in the lineup.
  14. Yeah, one of these days fangraphs is just going to up and hire Parker.
  15. If he's making contact, I think Buxton might have decent HR numbers from the get go, only because Target Field is very, very kind to right handers. Lots of linedrives hang up just long enough to find the flower beds. And I still wouldn't really consider him a power hitter. Not yet at least.
  16. Just an issue with the semantics possibly, but I don't think either of those things are really that outrageous. Less than 50/50 either happen, but his phrasing makes them both sound like longshots which I wouldn't think is the case. Not that a 20/20 or 40 HRs automatically make for a good individual season. We've seen players do both and still look pretty ordinary or even poor.
  17. Comic book movies have never left such a loose thread hanging. It makes me think they might save it for later, but if they made a film continued from this storyline I don't know that it could be worked in organically, particularly if Hugh Jackman is truly done. I wonder if there's any chance that it might instead be worked into Legion somehow. Not that anyone knows how or even if that storyline is or will be connected in any way to any X-Man related film.
  18. Yes, but now my fear after seeing that Wagner deal is that the Vikings are going to wait out Kalil while the remaining options all sign and the Vikings will be left without a chair when the music stops and Kalil goes elsewhere. I'm not going to denounce Speilman, he's done some really good things in the past, but I've become less and less convinced that he can put a competitive offense together any longer. I'm ready for a new leading man. Or woman, I'm not a misogynist.
  19. Well it's the 49ers so that should explain it a bit. Maybe there's a reason everyone kept comparing Jon Lynch to Matt Millen after all.
  20. Yes, it was a key talking point for the new front office, something that is more than welcoming. I'm great with everyone having a swing that best suits their skills. I just want the players, Kepler included, to have an open mind when it comes to listening to the coaches who may have more insight than him.
  21. I actually didn't mind the innuendo and loose thread regarding this event. I was only left scratching my head because it seemed like the movie was giving hints at two separate and unrelated culprits.
  22. I think the problem is that the batters embrace his changeup and curve as well. They're just not very good pitches. He'd just be throwing more of a bad pitch. There have been plenty of relievers who have succeeded on a cutter heavy approach though.
  23. Max knows more about hitting than I do (but less than Parker!) so at this point I'll judge his swing by his results. But in my view this is a completely unacceptable attitude. With how often players and teams change their swings, approach at the plate and in-game strategy, a guy can't be this resolute in what he wants to do. It 100% does not prove everyone else wrong and thinking so and saying it on record to a reporter is just going to make him want to commit to that swing even if it ends up needing to be revamped.
  24. But the teams that you say weren't acting ethically also followed the rules. The rules implicitly allowed them to chose option B. How is it any different than a base runner trying to steal signs from the catcher? Or fouling a terrible free throw shooter in basketball? Or requesting an extension to file your taxes? Are those ethical problems as well?
