  1. One of the biggest.
  2. It wasn't a reference to the income of the proprietor, it was a reference to quaintness of the familial atmosphere and adherence to doing things the way they've always been done.
  3. I may not have been fair to Gladden, if he's more open to baseball evolution than I assumed, kudos to him. It's good practice to embrace innovation for any occupation I would think.
  4. No idea. Are the scouts figuring out stuff like launch angle, exit velocity and spin rates? If they don't gather these kinds of new measurements perhaps not much has changed.
  5. Seems to me perhaps the best predictor of MLB success is if a guy in the minors can avoid strikeouts and draw some walks. Though obviously there's not a hard and fast rule about taking good at bats in the minors, these are the types of players I tend to worry about the least. I'd certainly be disappointed if he didn't get another shot to redeem himself next year particularly considering even in this down year, he's somehow improved both his BB% and K% by a significant margin.
  6. I think these are increasingly becoming contradictory though. Conventional wisdom and preconceived notions aren't getting you a leg up on the competition. While I cheer the Twins embracing the advancements for the sake of my favorite team doing all that needs to be done to put a winner together, I am a nostalgic guy. Back in the day I could have recited each member of the 3000 hit club, the 500 HR club and 300 win club. I studied the back of every baseball card and could have given a pretty solid bio about everyone in the HOF. It's a bitter pill, but I want championships. What the game is now doesn't have to tarnish how I remembered it as a kid. It's just, different.
  7. Do all the scouts go to Sturgis also?! I agree with a lot of your points about the where the organizational failings stem from, but I don't really agree that Gladden is tied into modern baseball and unless they pass by the clubhouse and broadcast booth, I'd think he has little interaction with the scouts who largely work remotely. The idea that job security is going to be based on productivity and malleability instead of tenure does appear to be coming to fruition though. That's progress as far as I'm concerned, even if it's the impersonal and corporate way to do things. If you're going to win, you have to keep up with the Joneses. Mom and pop shops aren't suited to win in today's big money sports environment.
  8. And in your first couple of hours you came here to post instead of doting on her constantly? Man, there really should have been some advice in this thread advising against that. Sorry, we dropped the ball on that one. Also, congrats!
  9. They can and have won with inferior players at those positions. But would winning be easier if those two were replaced by cheap young players and their earmarked dollars were reallocated to drastically improve the pitching staff?
  10. Clearly he doesn't, which is going to make it even more imperative for him to learn that he has to work in the zone. If he doesn't have the same stuff he'll get no one to chase; major leagurers are going to take, take, take his stuff and he's going to fall behind everyone. Like many young guys, he's likely going to have to learn that lesson the hard way. I'd prefer it be this year instead of next and just like Berrios, it's likely not a lesson that can be learned at AAA.
  11. He doesn't work on the edges and outside of the zone relying on minor leaguers to chase? His high pitch counts despite the reports of good control would suggest he does.
  12. Age 68 after a long battle with cancer. There likely isn't a Twins player that had such a lopsided ratio of games played compared to amount of respect and adulation as Baylor. It's hard to believe that his large impact on the 1987 team was only measured in 27 games. He impacted so many teams both during and after his playing career. A great ambassador for the game.
  13. If he's one of those guys who likes to pick at the corners and get swings and misses out of the zone I think he's going to have a tough time at the MLB level regardless of when he is called up, like Berrios last year. I don't think that's a lesson he's going to learn anywhere but at the highest level; if the team is hoping he'll contribute next year, I'd like to see him take his lumps this year and adjust his approach as needed next spring.
  14. That would go over so well here.
  15. Yeah, and humans like new technology, even back then. If the steam engine could have called balls and strikes they would have had one plopped behind home plate in every ballpark in America. People went nuts for the steam engine. But even more than technology, people like things being fair, equal and accurate. At the game's inception, umpires called balls and strikes out of neccessity, obviously if they had the technology they would have used it; baseball wouldn't be the sole institution that would eschew it. No one laments the loss of blacksmiths any longer.
  16. Why do teams use innings to measure a pitchers workload when individual games are measured in pitches? It goes without saying that all innings are not equal. They do not create the same amount of stress on a pitcher, physical or mental.
  17. Ha, now the transcripts of his initial phone calls with the Mexican and Australian leaders have been leaked. https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2017/politics/australia-mexico-transcripts/?utm_term=.1c9cbc378708 Regarding the Syrian refugees: "The President: Malcom [sic], why is this so important? I do not understand. This is going to kill me. I am the world's greatest person that does not want to let people into the country. And now I am agreeing to take 2,000 people and I agree I can vet them, but that puts me in a bad position. It makes me look so bad and I have only been here a week." Ha, what the hell?!?
  18. I think the market has already confirmed they have marginal value at best and it likely hasn't changed since last winter. Certainly they have much, much less value than us Twins fans would like. Dozier plays an undesirable position and Santana likely is more expensive, older, and strikes out too few batters to move the needle.
  19. That's always at or near the top of my list of issues with the team. But looking at the drafts since about 2011, the lack of strikeouts has been addressed. Just so very, very poorly. They knew it was a problem but unlike every other franchise, apparently didn't know how get the kinds of pitchers that could fix it at the MLB level.
  20. Yeah, and you want to be just like me!
  21. Yes, it displeases me very much that she changed it. If she offers to remove anyone's warning points in exchange for their soul, don't fall for it.
  22. Good thought, the team might as well go with him as the closer.
  23. I can't quite make it out. Are the dogs sitting on it?
  24. It's certainly nowhere to be found in game threads.
