  1. I don't know, I think if TB wants Kepler as a main part of an Archer deal they're the one's overpaying. The guy can't hit lefties, he's almost certainly going to be a platoon player. But no interest in Cobb, the guy can't strike anyone out which is this staff's biggest problem. Unless the can get Arrietta on a one year deal, pass on the free agents, none of them have the ceiling to be what this team needs.
  2. Seems pretty affordable. I'm going to be disappointed if we don't later find out that the Twins offered a better deal but he didn't want to come here.
  3. It sounded like the dig was aimed at TB. It seems to me most people are way too critical of defensive capabilities of minor league shortstops. There are only two types of minor league shortstops defensively, those with a standout glove or those that will have to move. There's no room for the Jorge Poloncos or the Asdrubal Cabreras or the Trea Turners or Javier Baezs of the world.
  4. All good stuff, this in particular. Yes, yes do this one regardless if you sign Darvish.
  5. I don't want Napoli, but if he's a requirement to get Darvish I can find enough half full glasses to make me less shy about him. Like his obscenely low .225 BABIP last year, what looks like a career outlier in terms of BB% and his spray chart looks a lot like Brian Dozier's and Target Field tends to help that profile a ton.
  6. It counts for something in my book, because so far this front office has made it clear that they want outspoken team-leader types. It would be best if the team didn't have to use free agency to get those qualities and it would be great if the players they got to fill those roles were actually standouts on the field as well as off.
  7. I don't think ERA is a great indicator of production. Yeah, if a guy is going to give up an extra base hit I'd prefer he can strike out the next guy. Archer's adjusted values are much better than average.
  8. I'll take the high strikeouts over the ERA. This team's biggest deficiency is too many pitchers who put too many balls in play, that needs to be remedied in every way possible. But I'd probably balk at those three players as well. I might be able to be talked into Lewis.
  9. I buy into just about all of that except for the bolded sentence. I buy that many Trump supporters lack the education and/or the desire to think about complex subjects themselves and would prefer to have someone tell them what to BELIEVE, but these are the same people who buy cabins in the mountains of Montana and build bunkers in their backyards in Arkansas to avoid government intrusion and these are the same people who absolutely lose their minds when anyone utters the word taxes. I don't know that I buy that these people want to be told what to do, it seems to me that nearly all of them at least want the illusion that NO ONE tells them what to do.
  10. All things being equal, 81 wins sounds about right to me. But in the AL you've got 7-8 teams that don't look like they're trying this year. I think the new trend to tank is probably going to mess with projections until we have more data on the prerogative.
  11. Sure, but I thought the hypothetical was Martinez and Archer vs. Martinez and Kepler, as Kepler was part of the bait to get the pitcher. Under the same hypothetical, Martinez is only out in RF for a year or so anyway while the team waits for one of their young guys to emerge.
  12. Hunter had a .3 UZR in TF and a -18.3 at Comerica the prior season. Similarly Martinez had a -17.2 in Comerica his last full season there. Both players were most hurt by the range factor, something that is largely negated by the tiny foul territory, the shallow but tall rightfield wall and Byron Buxton typically shading in that direction. Sure, I'll take a good defensive player, but if the Twins can afford a position to sacrifice offense for defense, it's easily rightfield.
  13. I don't think there's any collusion. I think the bad teams have realized that a 75 win season doesn't do their bottom line any better than a 65 win season but due to draft picks, payroll flexibility and a lack of long term contracts, a 65 win season is a much quicker path to contention as counter-intuitive as it might sound. Additionally, I think the smart front offices are realizing that the abilities between an expensive veteran and a cheap young player are too often negligible. With all the technological innovations and advances made throughout the game, the minor leaguers are much more prepared for the majors than they were two decades ago.
  14. It's right field at Target Field, it is perhaps the least demanding position in baseball. Just ask 40-year-old Torii Hunter who turned in a league average season in RF a year after being the worst outfielder in baseball playing in Detroit.
  15. I agree except I'd prefer we used a stronger word than "customers". It sounds too benign to me when we're talking about children.
  16. I assume you mean year as opposed to years because Lewis will be up and raking losing his prospect status by July!
  17. Yes, the Twins gave him a contract knowing full well the various consequences of a hypothetical injury. The Twins shouldn't be pressuring him into any medical treatment he doesn't want just as all of our employers shouldn't be pressuring us into any medical treatment we don't want. Most of us have worker's comp available to us, he has a guaranteed salary. And it's a good reason for the teams to take out insurance policies on the larger player contracts.
  18. Injuries and surgery are a side effect due to the occupation, they are not an obligation. An employer that tries to take domain over their employees' bodies would be human traffickers. It's not the club's call, it's the player's, no matter the severity of the procedure.
  19. Because it's his hand not yours and surgery sucks. If he wanted to wait and hope it fixed itself, he's got that right.
  20. On this, I'm a silver lining guy. Partly because I don't trust Santana and regardless of when he comes back, this injury is going to at least cause some nagging doubt in those calling the shots. In other words, his leash will be shorter than it would be if he was healthy. But mostly, this will prevent the timeless Twins tradition of fence straddling! Now if they don't sign Darvish or trade for a front line starter, they are all but telling the fans that this team isn't as good as last year's not-good-enough team. Now if they want to sell the fans on contention they HAVE to make a bold move. Otherwise, it's just the same old Twins. They can't stand pat on this one and win the pot; have to go all-in or fold.
  21. It would be great if the Twins can get some resolution to the Darvish drama because if they don't get him there's not another starting pitching on the market I'd care to sign to a multi-year deal. In the (more) likely (than not) scenario where the Twins don't get Darvish, I'd be interested in a bigger spend for a RH bat who could see time in the outfield.
  22. I'd never kneel during the anthem and I'd rather the athletes find a better way to protest. But I also don't worry about myself or my family getting shot during a traffic stop or struggling in any way because of racially pointed political policies so I'm sympathetic to the message which was in no way getting through to people until they did something bold and eye-opening to much of our population. Nothing is working for them. Nothing is changing, it's going backwards in fact. If it was me, I'd probably try about anything to make the world better for my kids. Very little would be off limits.
  23. I appreciate what you have dedicated your life to, and I'm fairly confident in saying that support of the military is strong in nearly every area of our nation, but why does the military get to claim sole dominion over the National Anthem? Doesn't it represent school teachers, firemen, bankers, bakers and construction workers too? Doesn't it represent police officers and politicians also? They tend to wear our nation's flag on their uniforms and suits and those are the targets of the protests. I think the problem is that Republican's have falsely claimed the right to the flag, the national anthem and everything patriotic. If I were to protest, I'd protest their bogus confiscation of those principles and the fact that they have blasphemously started injecting Fascism into them.
