  1. Considering the Saints previous success against the run, I thought the OL was OK last night. Obviously it's not a good OL, but I expected much, much worse. The worst OL play on the night came from Pat Elflien too, the one guy who's supposed to be reliable. He got blown up on a three man rush and got Cousins clobbered. Hill wasn't good, but I didn't notice O'Niell, which was encouraging. Not sure what to think about the defense since it was the offense who kept putting the Saints on the board. I'd like to say the secondary was pretty good even without Rhodes, but the Saints really didn't test them deep. The Vikings were probably playing soft underneath to compensate for missing Rhodes and therefore not just going straight man on Thomas, which is probably also why they were giving up extra yards on the ground. I can't believe I'm saying this, but of all the players out, Anthony Barr's absence might have been the biggest loss. He can be pretty quick to the line of scrimmage plugging up running lanes. Still, it looked bad, but the Vikings outplayed the Saints. Two just mind-blowing turnovers and a terrible play call on 4th and 1 in their own territory. I don't like to do the "We beat ourselves" bit, but the Vikings were their own worst enemy last night.
  2. Nonsense. I’ve seen Brian Duensing start not one, but two different playoff games. Oooooh....
  3. I fell asleep on the couch and kept waking up thinking it’d be over. I finally went to bed in the middle of the 18th. Oops.
  4. Yeah, it’s just, no words. I’m sure he’ll give up his agency upon being hired but how does he look Noah Syndergaard in the eye when he starts making decisions that are in ownership’s best interest at the player’s expense? Or is this going to usher in some new era utopia where player interests and owner interests magically align. I would presume in the utopia where both players and owners are satisfied it means fans are doubly screwed?
  5. As someone who’s spent all summer day-dreaming about Manny Machado in a Twins uniform, man, I’m really starting to reconsider. Everyone is talking about the defensive issues and lack of hustle, but geez, the bad vibes he gives me are even worse. I don’t like jumping on and off bandwagons though. Maybe I just table my preference for now.
  6. So it sounds like the Mets are going to hire this Brodie van Wagonen guy to be their GM. His current job is as agent to half of the Mets team including deGrom and Syndergaard. I mean this is all very pretty weird, and it should be fun to see how screwed up the Mets end up, but I'm thinking it's going to be a pretty safe bet that those two pitchers will NOT be available this off season?
  7. I don't think that's true, and if it is, that's the problem, not Buxton's lack of production. If the team is built with a lynchpin player and if that player struggles or gets injured the team falls apart, then I don't think your team is very good. I'd love for Buxton to get on track and I don't care who's responsible for doing it, but he nor Sano, nor Berrios, nor Rosario nor Lewis nor anyone should be viewed as some kind of must-have player who's the fulcrum between success and failure. There are thousands of ways to win a baseball game.
  8. I don’t know, I’d think saying you want the local hero to stay, regardless how you really feel, when you know he’s going to retire is probably on page one of the PR handbook. Forget the front office, it was probably the first thing everyone told Baldelli to say when they prepped for his press conference.
  9. I thought the general rule was, that if you see a company advertise pizza on a national TV spot you should be ordering from somewhere else.
  10. Well he's been working full time for the Rays since he retired. I don't know why it wouldn't have been an issue then but it is now.
  11. Wow, good company. I'm taking a listen now. Edit: Ha, just got to the part where Luhnow was praising St. Louis' use of analytics to win the WS and then immediately said he can't sit up on stage and share his secrets! Oh the foreshadowing! It's at the 18:30 mark.
  12. I considered the possibility that I'd be shown up so I slyly slipped a double negative into my post
  13. They did offer him an extension.
  14. What the heck Topps, even that stamped signature says Rocky. I ain't never seen a Lawrence Berra baseball card.
  15. My only concern with Espada was that it seemed like it might be over-mining the Astros system. Alex Cora is about to win a World Series, let's go do the same with Espada. That's probably not why a team would want Espada, but I'd be concerned that it would probably be why many of the fans would. But I don't know anything about him, I'm sure he would be great also. I'm happy with Baldelli, I like the Plouffe endorsement, not because I want Plouffe's input, just I can hope that it's representative of other players as well. While free agency is largely based on money, it's also based on geography, hopefully Baldelli is popular enough to offset some of the Twins unfixable geography issues.
  16. He was a pretty high profile scout, I wonder what he was being paid. Perhaps there was an anaylitics issue, though I wouldn’t want to stereotype. Seems to me these things happen in the corporate world all the time. If a company can pay two or three upstarts with a more modern education to do the same job, it wouldn’t be economical not to make the switch. I feel bad he lost his job but I’m glad the Phillies are letting him continue if that’s what he wants. I’d think this a societal issue though, not a Twins-specific issue.
  17. For awhile there after the team drafted Cook, and then again once he got healthy, it didn't look like paying Latavius Murray was necessary. Signing him and then retaining him was been pretty fortuitous.
  18. I like the pen arms. But mostly because I assume most of them are still starting right now. Which is the way it used to be before the Twins went on that reliever-heavy draft binge last decade. I'd guess the lower upside starters you referenced in the first paragraph will mostly end up in the pen.
  19. No, the interest in the team waned after they started tanking in May and June. Most of their audience was gone well before they decided to trade. If they want to keep interest they need to put a continually good product on the field all year long. All teams have ups and downs, but interesting teams don't bottom out as thoroughly as this team seems to do at least once a year.
  20. I empathize with the fans who wanted to watch the best possible team even in a lost season. But judging by the fans in the stands, the game thread participation/death and surely the TV ratings, your passion was surpassed by a mountain of apathy and frustration. Choosing to stick with a fruitless present to appease a minority of fans would have been irresponsible. They aren’t going to win back the fans by putting their best team on the field after everyone has already tuned out. They’ll win them back by putting their best team on the field next April and the April after that and the one after that.
  21. Perhaps the new strength and conditioning team were brought in to help with that. Along with getting Kepler's swing and Polanco's shoulder stronger. Also with getting more bullpen guys able to go multiple innings. And Sano.
  22. Well we know that Escobar was willing to forgo free agency, we know that the Twins did offer him a contract and we also know that the consensus is that Arizona got him for a bargain price. That coupled with Arizona's long history of being more attractive to athletes (and moderators) than Minnesota, what we know is much more indicative that Escobar just didn't want to be here.
  23. So is the contention that if the Twins had kept him he would have eventually just signed a contract? He played for both AZ and the Twins last year and immediately re-signed with AZ. This theory seems to boil down to the Twins should have Flowers in the Attic-ed Escobar so that he'd never find out that the grass is greener elsewhere. My suspicions would be that he already knew.
  24. That guy got fired already. And before that he also once resigned after fudging up all the contracts.
  25. The Vikings allowed 16 points to Garoppolo and the Rams allowed 10 to Beathard and that is a negative for the Vikings? The Vikings/Rams game was 38-31 on the road yet this is supposedly the second coming of The Greatest Show on turf. What gives there? That should have been a blowout if the Rams defense was so superior. The Seahawks are a mess yet they scored more points against the Rams than they have against any other team thus year. Holding any team under 20 points this year should be the new barometer. Any team can score on any other team.
