  1. Also sad: this is a pretty clear indication that despite being a professional franchise, the Twins are below some (probably lots of) college football teams in the sports hierarchy.
  2. He seemed like the most balanced Twins journalist. On the scale of being a complete homer and being eye-rollingly critical, Berardino seemed to be really good at staying on the fulcrum.
  3. I'd just like him to be a rotational guy at 1B so as to be able to rotate others into RF based on matchups. I'd like to see 1B be a quasi DH next year for the Twins; no one has their name written in ink and it's open to anyone capable.
  4. I agree that I would want a team to pay for his potential if he's being dealt straight up. However, if the Twins were talking to a team about getting an ace or an in-his-prime elite RH bat and that team wants Kepler as a 2nd or 3rd piece, I wouldn't get too emotional about selling low on him. If the other team gets a bargain in the process, good for them.
  5. Based on his unhealthy desire to bring in over the hill players from his coaching glory days, I'd think Thibs was perhaps just lucky in his previous job. If you can't recreate what you did before using different but younger and more talented parts, heck, if you won't even try, my guess is you didn't know what you were doing the first time and just stumbled into the situation.
  6. While I'd love for the Twins to nail the science on these kinds of discoveries, I don't think it's logical to expect it. I Max Muncy could just as easily have been Jordan Schaffer. Scooter Gennett could have been Taylor Motter and Blake Treinen might as well have been Brandon Kintzler. No one's ever too thrilled when they get these guys off of the scrap heap and their success rate has to be 25% tops. And by success, I mean barely justified in sticking on a 40-man.
  7. Does J.D. Martinez count? The Twins drafted him in 2006. Four rounds before Anthony Slama! And 27 rounds after Danny Valencia.
  8. I actually like the momentum shift that so often accompanies a new manager. It seems to me "surprise" teams commonly have new managers. I'm not even necessarily saying it's the old manger's fault or the new manager's doing, it's just that all-to-often something intangible seems to take place unexpectedly and in a positive direction. It happened with Molitor's first year on the job in fact.
  9. Perhaps I could use a history lesson, but wasn't Greinke pushing for a trade out of KC and then wasn't thrilled when it turned out to be Milwaukee? After spending the better part of the last decade in LA and Pheonix I might suspect that mid-western teams make up quite a bit of his no-trade list. But if that's all a load of baloney, cool, I'll take him and his salary, even at that age. They won't be able to spend that money anywhere else. I still want to spend good money on relievers though, and not the kind that have to wait three months to sign and become "bargains" because the other clubs are all weary. They seem to like to sign in groups lately to form a nice back end block, so go get two of Familia, Herrera, Allen, Kimbrel, Britton, Miller, Robertson or Soria. Then get an Adam Warren, David Phelps or Bud Norris for good measure.
  10. Selling a star player will always stink in the NBA as long as it's an accepted practice to protect the top draft picks. Where's the motivation to move a stud player when the pick compensation is going to be #12 overall? That needs to change.
  11. It's hard to reconcile Butler's well regarded all out effort and anything-to-win attitude with his desire to play for three of the worst teams in the league. Not questioning his motivations or anything, just ick, the Knicks might be more poorly run than the Wolves. Well if the coach has to bring in vets to motivate the young guys because that's not his strength but the only good vet doesn't want to be here, I think it's time for a new coach.
  12. Tangibly, I think they need to identify a reliable big RH bat. I'm not giving up on Sano or Buxton, but they need someone else they can be reasonably confident won't falter. And go crazy on free agent relievers, but unlike last year, get the high velocity variety this time. Intangibly, they need new energy. This team never looked like a confident contender at any point of this season. They need to get someone or do something to kick-start the enthusiasm again. Not with the fans, just with the players. Winning is all you need to breed enthusiasm with the fans.
  13. Yes, the MiLB articles are perhaps the most consistently excellent part of our site, I know we have many posters who follow this site just for those write-ups. Could be those folks already have a head start hibernating now that the minor league season is over! Thanks for all the hard work guys!
  14. If Siemian were to get enough playing time to convince people he was worth multi-year deal, I'd think that would have to mean that Cousins went down for an extended stretch.
  15. Kind of bummed about Coley, I thought he looked like he had some talent. Is Zylstra going to be the #3? I can't imagine Robinson is anything more than the 5th guy at least for a few weeks. He surely doesn't know the system.
  16. The Seahawks cut Tom Johnson in an effort to re-sign him to different terms (allegedly) and the Vikings swooped in and brought him back. Not a lot of playing time to be had at DT most likely as they are already running a four man rotation, but I'm more than happy to have Johnson as depth and really happy to pull one over on Seattle.
  17. Can Kyle Sloter be the #2 so as we can see if he has any NFL ability if the Vikings happen to run up the score a bit? I think everybody already has a legit assessment on Siemian. By legit, I of course mean poor.
  18. They didn't sell off the nucleus though, just the guys who were going to soon be gone anyway. Considering that almost every deal happens right near the deadline, making it earlier seems like the wrong move. If you want a bad team like the Twins to hold on to their players longer, you'd want to move it later in the year as they'll draw out the trade process hoping to get a better return as other teams are feeling the pressue to improve.
  19. I just like that there is a thread that acknowledges we should evaluate the parts, not the whole. Some things are working some things aren't; I'd like to keep the stuff that is while fixing the stuff that isn't instead of tossing everything in the trash and starting over.
  20. Coley is fairly slight, but Zylstra is 6'3" 220lb. His body type indicates he'd be a good outside target to go up and get jump balls and box out DBs. Sounds like his route running is great too. He's got a lot of exciting traits, but it all could be baloney and just too much hoping for another Thielen. It would just be nice to give us a glimpse to see if there's anything there or not so we know if we should stop holding our breath.
  21. Wright was a weird situation, he always seemed a reliable 3-4 WR. Only thing that ever occurs to me is that he was too small and they must have felt they needed a bigger body because of the guys they had ahead of him. Diggs wasn't going anywhere and while Thielen is 6-2, he's not really a big body. Before Thielen it was Greg Jennings who was also small. I have no interest in Bryant, he looked shot the last three years. I think he's much more name than talent now and has been for awhile. Gordon I'd have a little interest but only if the front office knows for sure the Browns were wrong on him, I'd have no interest in any drama. But it sounds like New England is getting him. But just like Robinson, I don't want new wideouts that haven't been around since the training camp. Can anyone think of one that has had a good year moving to a new team without being around for training camp? Honest question, all I can ever come up with are a bunch of busts.
  22. I'd rather that pressure come from Coley and Zylstra. At least they've been around all off season or longer and know the system. Robinson is 30 and has never been able to carve out a meaningful role anywhere, I hope he doesn't eat away at any snaps that would otherwise go to the younger and higher upside backups currently on the team. Probably no reason to be concerned though, I'd guess the organization that found a Pro Bowler from a community tryout probably knows better than to overlook the unknown in-house products.
  23. ***** I moved the last page of the conversation to a new more general Vikings discussion thread seen here: http://twinsdaily.com/topic/31366-2018-vikings-in-season-thread/
  24. Hmm, I'm not big on WRs transitioning to new teams midseason. So if he's taking Carlson's spot, who's spot is Bailey taking? This guy has basically followed Kyle Shanahan from Washington to Atlanta to San Francisco and the 49ers decided they didn't want him. Not sure I do either.
  25. Just to keep a bit of order. I'll be moving some of the posts from the Vikings/Packers thread here momentarily.
