  1. I think the small market mentality is certainly an issue with the fan base, I'm not sure about the front office though. They did chase Ohtani and Darvish last off season. They ended up stinking it up in free agency, but it wasn't for a lack of trying. At the very least there should be a lot of action this off season, they may make all the wrong moves again, but hey, maybe they won't. Either way, I liked the fact that last winter there was always a reason to be checking in here and at MLBTR. But what I really am waiting for are the trades. They haven't really moved prospects yet, which I find odd considering they reeeeally don't seem to care for most of TR and Anthony's guys. Fingers crossed on my left hand that they start dealing some guys ASAP. Fingers crossed on my right hand that the guys they trade for work out.
  2. No way. You know how bad a classic early century wool suit is going to smell after doing wind sprints? He would have been paying his dry cleaner more than any of his players.
  3. I wouldn't think so, new managers are quite often a catalyst for a quick turnaround. I couldn't say why, it's perhaps intangible, but it happens very frequently, including with Molitor. I was in favor of a new manager if for no other reason than to kick-start this club (but there were other reasons also).
  4. I don't want Grossman back, I think this team can do better. That said, with Mauer likely gone, Grossman's skill set is probably less redundant moving forward. Additionally, anyone who tuned out the Twins after they went in the tank missed seeing Grossman's best stretch, he probably was the Twins best hitter the last month or so. Still, no thanks, I'd look for more power and defensive flexibility. Best I would do is keep him around through spring training in case of an injury then part ways come March.
  5. I want someone who is creative. I want someone who has new ideas, not someone who has to be taught all the new ideas. I want someone who is as foreign as possible to this organization so as not to have been burdened with our specific Upper-Midwestern mores and modest expectations. But mostly, I want someone who the young players can relate to and feed off of.
  6. Can't merge regular threads and Articles without screwing up the OP article. And yes, you have chewed my butt for closing similar threads as that is the alternative That said, this is a better place to have this conversation: http://twinsdaily.com/topic/31490-article-twins-manager-paul-molitor-fired/
  7. OK folks, Mike's putting $100 up against anyone that the Twins will sign Machado. Looks like his bookie has them as the runaway favorite.
  8. I can't 'like' your post with the inclusion of that last team. I'd fear the 'like' would be misconstrued. Thankfully, everything the White Sox touch these days turns to dust, so hopefully Machado and his agent have been paying attention and are superstitious.
  9. From the sound of it Machado doesn't want an opening at SS or 3B, he just wants an opening at SS. I don't see the Dodgers moving the defensively superior Seager, who is also a really good offensive player, off of SS to acquiesce to Machado. I'd guess the Twins couldn't get him, but I'd also bet the Dodgers don't make a huge effort as long as he continues to state that he only wants to play SS. My money would be on the Phillies; with their defensive experiments of Rhys Hoskins to the OF and Carlos Santana back to 3B and mid-season trades for both Jose Bautista and Asdrubal Cabrera, I'm not reading them as a team that is overly concerned about defense.
  10. The Twins have money and prospects (supposedly) coming out of their ears. Free agency isn't the only avenue to improve.
  11. This could be interesting. All of us seem to want Machado and none of us actually think the Twins can get him. But in this age in which defense is heavily analyzed and prioritized, what does Manny do if none of the big market teams will commit to him at SS, but the Twins or another similarly unattractive market does?
  12. Yeah, I'd prefer to bring in Neil Young than to keep letting Graham Nash write filler songs.
  13. Where the heck did Yelich's power come from this year? With Miami he was like one of those dinosaur hitters who was still sticking with the flat as table swing, trying to generate line drives. Is whatever update Yelich got available for Max Kepler in the App Store?
  14. Maybe see if the possibly rebuilding Giants want to get out from under most or all of Brandon Crawford’s deal. Solid defensively and while his bat isn’t worth his salary he’s never a black hole.
  15. Expected doesn't mean correct. Those publications expected Jay to go to the Twins because they'd been talking to him a lot and they'd had a history of taking relief pitchers way too early. Most of us expect Eddie Rosario to throw the ball ten feet over the cut-off man's head too.
  16. I didn't think I'd enjoy reading any article about the Wolves this year; I was wrong. So I went from being bummed that this team likely now has no shot to make a run at top five seed to excitedly waiting to see how much havoc this train wreak will cause, all in about a week. Maybe I'm just a bad fan, but I suspect the swiftness with which I became apathetic actually says more about the franchise.
  17. Geez, he's just a kid, no need to kick him when he's down.
  18. I guess as long as it isn't impacting the payroll, I don't care what they pay him any more than I care that the team got to pay Dozier a fraction of his worth for three of his past four years. And the team should have known, and likely did know, that Mauer's 2009 power was going to go away. I swear, just about every one of those HR he hit in the Metrodome that year landed in the first row.
  19. I agree, there are valid reasons to criticize Mauer (though I don't think any are worth much anger) but his contract isn't one of them. Last year was the only year the team even approached an uncomfortable payroll and even that didn't stop them from chasing bigger names. If on the unlikely chance that Mauer's contract kept them from offering Darvish a $20M higher winning bid, well then I guess they got lucky on that front. Full disclosure: I wanted Darvish.
  20. I hope Kyle Gibson has a nice long talk with Stewart this off season about the dangers of getting too comfortable with being a sinkerballer whilst having shaky command. They're very similar pitchers as far as repertoire, velocity and control goes. If they follow the same trajectory, it sure would be nice if the Twins could simply avoid a few of those wasted years and just cut to the good part.
  21. I guess I'm out of free Strib articles but this was also syndicated so here's a non-Strib link: http://www.inforum.com/sports/football/4504236-struggling-weeks-explosive-griffen-was-asked-stay-away-vikings Man, this is just sad. He's battling something heavy, I really hope he's able to return to his previous level of functionality. I feel terrible for his wife and family as well.
  22. I don't know enough about mental health, but I'd think it's not a completely predictable science. I wouldn't be surprised if someone with mental health issues is able to reign in the problem for a decade but it somehow resurfaces later. If so, that should be the outcome I'd hope for as he was able to overcome it previously. As suggested, if it was CTE or something degenerative, that's not reversible at this time, so got to pray it's not that.
  23. Good for him. I'm glad he's getting to realize his potential. It didn't look like he would for the longest time. Can't do anything about it on our end and the guy who made that decision is gone, likely at least in part because of that poor decision.
  24. Maybe something overly stressful was a catalyst. Sometimes mental health issues just percolate out of nowhere though. Perhaps his pre-draft red flags were based on this? It kind of sounds like he thought he was staying at that hotel, yet obviously the rest of the team wasn't there. He sure sounded confused. The team likely would have heard about this Sunday morning, perhaps this was such a heavy load that they didn't play well. It would also explain why Zimmer was uncharacteristically NOT upset about how the team performed. I suggest this not as an excuse for the loss, but if the team played like crap because they were too concerned with Griffen, that's a good sign that he's got a lot of teammates who care about him. That's got to count for something as far as recovery goes.
