  1. I like Wells and think he has a shot to make a name for himself, but "throws hard" is a pretty good qualifier.
  2. Or he meant, I've said my piece and I'm not going to talk about it anymore because I now realize I've probably said too much and regret saying anything at all, so "that's the way it's going to stay". Either way, working with the team's hitting coach is probably not his call.
  3. I don't imagine many players hit with the hitting coach in December. Is Rowson expected to tour the country and the Caribbean all off season scheduling sessions with all the players?
  4. Excellent stuff, always happy to have celebrities stop by TD as well! Congrats on the success Niko.
  5. Looking at the Twins 40-man I don't see a lot to get stressed about. My DFA list would run about 7 deep before I ever had a hint of a second thought.
  6. He's not that good? He was a top 15 outfielder in the whole league last year. Top 10 based on other evaluations. I like Rosario and have hopes for Kepler and Buxton, but none of those guys have been as good as Hicks has been the last two seasons.
  7. I think Hicks found himself in a Kyle Gibson-ish age conundrum. He would have been hitting the market well past his perceived prime. Seems like a good deal for Hicks to me considering the current climate regarding players over 30. Good for Hicks securing a job (or at least a paycheck) long past an age most players these days are afforded. I'd imagine for a lot of guys, not having to go through what Marwin Gonzalez did or what Adam Jones and Denard Span are going through is worth it in itself. Not that I don't think he's worth it, the players are just getting railroaded by the owners these days.
  8. That's probably more dependent on what kind of control (and reputation) your pitcher has. Oh, sorry, you said experts, disregard.
  9. Lots of other teams are winning baseball games without Sano and Buxton. Should those two not live up to expectations, I should hope the Twins are able to figure out how to do so as well. That said, I hope they live up to expectations and think they can.
  10. At the beginning of the offseason I would have been more than happy to have Iglasis on a MiLB deal. But I prefer what the Twins did instead. Maybe Schoop's already washed up, but he at least has the offensive potential to be a very good contributor. I'll give away defense for offense every time, so I'd rather do Schoop, Polanco and Gonzalez than whatever the alternative would have been with Iglesis, he just doesn't hit enough for me. Santana wasn't particularly cheap if he makes the White Sox though, he's getting 4.5M which is more than the Twins signed Perez for. I don't particularly want either pitcher, but if the Twins had gone with Santana, he'd have that built in organizational equity which tends to give guys longer leashes than they otherwise would get. If the Twins were going to go with a low cost veteran pitcher, I'd rather they see about Clay Buchholz.
  11. Great news, that means he should be in the Twins front office in a couple of years. I'd like to say TB is a feeder system for the Twins. But I can't because then I look at their records and remember that makes no sense.
  12. I agree, Marwin doesn't raise the ceiling much, but he raises the floor tremendously. This signing is taking away at bats from Adrianza, Field, Grossman, Petit and Motter. I'd think it would go without saying that this team is going to have guys hurt/terrible/suspended again in 2019. Who those players are is unpredictable, but now there's a league average hitter on the roster who can cover near any spot saving us from watching a 29-year-old batless journeyman who's been DFA'd three times in the last two months and has spent most of his last five season in AAA. This isn't a blockbuster deal, it's not putting anyone over the top, but everyone and their mother complained about the Twins lack of offensive depth last year, and justifiably so. This should shine as evidence that this team finally cares about establishing a MLB quality bench. It cost them 10M per this year and next? So what, good for them.
  13. If this team does find a way to have Astudillo and Gonzalez on the 25-man, it would also be pretty helpful when calling up prospects. If a starter gets injured, they could call up the best hitter period, not the best hitter who plays a particular position. Maybe now we get Kirilloff or Rooker instead of Tyler Motter or Gregorio Petit.
  14. We must remember last year differently then because typically each game there were at least three guys in the lineup who I didn't even want on the team.
  15. I think this would all be easier to digest if it wasn't viewed as him taking away plate appearances from the starters, but as him taking away some of the 1886 PA made by Grossman, Adrianza, Morrison, Forsythe, Wilson, LaMarre, Castro, Petit, Field, Gimenez, Motter and Graterol last year. There should be plenty of room for everyone who should be playing to play.
  16. Why? Last year the Twins had only one player play more than 140 games and only four play more than 110 games. Even if healthy, one of the starting nine will have a day off just about every day and this is baseball, they won't all be healthy.
  17. That's only because we as Twins fans have long forgotten the benefits to having league average hitters available on the bench. It seems like a good thing in theory, but we haven't gotten to test it out in decades.
  18. Well Adrianza played in 114 games last year and no one was intentionally trying to get his bat in the game.
  19. I want to see a game this year where the Twins do a double Caesar Tovar. Gonzalez AND Astudillo play all 9 positions in the same game.
  20. From my recollection, Garver seemed to improve quite a bit in the second half of the season. Though maybe I was wrong. Or maybe no one noticed because the Twins weren't giving anyone a reason to watch their games anymore.
  21. He thought the White Sox would have been won 85 games with Machado this year? Was he going to be their #1, #2 and #3 starter as well?
  22. That's OK too, because now that this leaked, the team can't hide behind the idea that they don't have money to spend. If they don't get Gonzalez, get Kimbrel. It's reasons like this that probably causes the Twins to have everything all buttoned up. This leak probably came from Gonzalez's side trying to drum up interest.
  23. Marwin or no Marwin, I don't expect Austin to be with this organization past June unless he makes it through waivers. His strikeout problems are just too glaring and they've got controllable and option-able corner bats at every level. If this team had both Asutdillo and Gonzalez on their bench, they'd have all kinds of flexibility. Not only would that help for day-to-day roster construction but they could afford to move just about anyone to make additional upgrades if they're playing well, or move anyone on expiring contracts if they're not.
  24. I'd rather have Kimbrel. But after decades of having next to no competent hitters on the bench, I'll take a league average hitter who's a versatile but below average defender over a guy with no bat. He's not a high priority for me, but I don't want Adrianza on this team anyway.
