Back in the day umpires purposefully gave good experienced pitchers (that generally being pitchers too expensive for the Twins to afford) a bigger strikezone. Now the umpires only errantly expand the strikezone against the Twins, likely due to the perception that they strike out a lot. I don't like the Twins current hitting philosophy, but they shouldn't be penalized doubly simply because of incompetent or spiteful umpiring; umpires 100% should not be influencing game plans. Considering it takes an act of god to get rid of bad umpires at the MLB level, they need to move forward with the automated strikezone. There have been a bunch of changes to the game recently, and while there was lots of consternation prior to implementation, most of the changes have been accepted, this one would too. -

I think it's a continuation of 2023. I know the bats picked up at the end of the year, but this is pretty much what we saw the first 4-5 months of last year too. I don't think their 'take all the pitches' hitting philosophy is the one-size-fits-all approach they think it is.

Yeah, as much as I like to see Cleveland short handed, this is getting to be a problem leaguewide. For the same reason the NFL tries to protect QBs, it's not good for the game if MLBs best pitchers can no longer stay healthy.

Trading for a big pitcher doesn't seem like a Cleveland move. Definitely sucks for Bieber, but seems like it doesn't suck for the Twins. Obviously this hurts Cleveland this year, but he was also on the short list to get traded for a huge haul. Now they won't get a dime for him as he'll be a free agent before he's ready to pitch again.

When other teams get runners on, many pitchers tend to start nibbling at the corners to avoid leaving a big hit out over the plate. Obviously nibbling leads to more balls, which leads to more base runners. So if the other team knows that the Twins won't swing at the first pitch, the Twins are putting themselves at a huge disadvantage. No need to nibble. In the long run, the Twins won't be seeing more pitches, they'll just be taking more called strikes. -

Buxton has been one of this team's best hitters this year. Bad day today, but his strikeout rate was 19% before today. Funny how everyone else gets criticized for NOT swinging at enough pitches and Buxton here is getting criticized for taking cuts. Overreaction. There are other players to lay this load on.

Two innings from Funderburk. No hits and only 2 walks? Seemed like it was four times that number of baserunners he was responsible for. I suppose that wasn't too bad of an outing. Defense blew the run when he was on the mound.
