    A bigger (stronger) Nick Gordon probably would have been a pretty good player though. I know some people wanted Brecht and others wanted Honeycutt, but the Twins have been pretty reliable about doubling down on what is currently working, and running far away from the things that aren't working. They have steered clear of pitchers with command issues for a few years now and hitters with strikeout issues since leading the league in that category last year. On the other hand, middle infielders with good bat-to-ball skills? They've been doing well there at all levels, so this is no surprise.

    I don't think WAR is terribly reliable, but lately it has been pretty reliable in who the voters will choose. So for these predictions, I think it's a pretty safe benchmark.

    I think voters already know the issue with using counting stats now. I think Greinke gets in by year three on the ballet at the latest. I think Votto, Goldschmidt, Freeman and Betts are basically locks too. How many guys with .890 OPS, or whatever they'll finish with, aren't in the HOF?

    Fun discussion. I mostly agree with those tiers, but probably not the relievers as locks. The voters can't make up their minds about that position. Mariano Rivera is the ONLY unanimous HOF amongst all positions, but then you have to twist their arms to put anyone else in? Make up your minds guys and gals. Altuve is close to a lock but so was Carlos Beltran. We'll have to see how that trashcan blow back turns out in the years to come.

    He was always more of the crafty type, working with that low velocity. His velocity and movement look to be the same, I wonder what changed with him.

    I agree with going after ceiling players, not floor, and I'd give up a ton for Steele. However, I do think Kikuchi has the stuff to be a top end arm though. Even if it's only for this season when no one is hitting HRs anymore. I like him quite a bit more than Gausman and Bassitt. Just my take.

    He's had a HR problem in the past, like Joe Ryan. They both seem to be benefitting from this year's suppressed offense. I'm more than happy to take advantage of current climate while using past results to lower his cost. Then when they tweak the game next year to heat up the bats, you just don't re-sign him.

    I actually think Kikuchi might be the best of the three. He has the best K% and BB%, the two things I think are the biggest contributors to shutting down good offenses, which is what you'll see in the post season. The counting stats may keep his price down, meanwhile FIP says he's the one to target regardless of cost.

    I agree, I'm skeptical they sell. They might test the waters, but they're not that far back of Seattle.

    The tighter purse strings were a surprise this year, and then they got their TV money late in the offseason after there were no good free agents left to spend on. I think the odds of them expanding the payroll are lower than 50/50, but I'm not writing it off completely. A deep playoff run surely wouldn't hurt next year's TV negotiations, and after last year, surely they know starting pitching is the best bet to get there.

    The Rangers had a loaded roster last season, how were they a surprise champion? The lineup was stacked and they traded for Scherzer and Montgomery at the deadline. They were on everyone's radar. And AZ ran out of gas and got toasted in the World Series. They would have had to win four series against superior teams; they got close, but as expected didn't pull it off. Anything DOESN'T happen just by making the playoffs. The best team doesn't always or even usually win, but ONE of the best four or five teams pretty much always does. The goal needs to be one of the favorites, not just a scrappy underdog who got a ticket in.

    Agreed. If the Pohlad's are willing to re-open the wallet, Eovaldi seems like he could be a playoff starter. No interest in Lorenzen. He's always been a smoke-and-mirrors pitcher, I don't want him anywhere near the mound come October. And if the Twins need him just to get to the playoffs, then this team isn't a legit contender anyway. Andrew Heaney wasn't mentioned, but didn't the Twins try to sign him a couple years back?

    I'm disgusted by this country's toxic super capitalism, but it doesn't happen every time. His contact is for 4.8M, 800K of which was already paid as a signing bonus. An NFL team withholding 4M in in today's market would be worse for them than paying it. It's peanuts to these owners; the good-will alone would be worth more than 4M. The only reason they wouldn't pay is for salary cap reasons, but I'm sure they could work something out easy enough where they cancel the contract and just cut a check. So yeah, feel free to be heartless about corporate USA, but not because they won't pay, but because they may be doing it for the wrong reasons. But again, the Vikings keep getting top marks for how they treat their players, there's no reason to think the Wilfs won't realize the Vikings make 4M every other day from the franchise and think it's the right thing to do.

    Not sure what they'll get, but the Vikings keep getting top ranks for how they treat their players. I'd bet on them to do some degree of right by the family. But you're right, hardly the point at this time.

    I didn't like the Santana signing, but I'll be happy for him to continue to prove me wrong. But garbage titles like this is what is wrong with discourse in our society. Not enough people are willing to change their opinion on a topic despite evidence elsewise anymore. A certain demographic will NEVER admit they were wrong about something, but condescending finger waiving only makes the people who may be open to change, double down on their positions harder, it doesn't bring them around to see your side.

    Doesn't much matter which order you get the wins in. Except when it comes to claiming fan interest. The TV situation is brutal, but even when fans could watch them, slow starts were always bad for season-long attendance; they might want to figure that out one of these years.

    Raise the ceiling, not the floor. This sounds like a trade just for the sake of making a trade.

    I think teams have gotten much more adept at realizing the difference in value in improving the 'floor' as opposed to improving the 'ceiling' of their teams. A guy like this likely only minimally improves the team more than a waiver claim guy like Caleb Boushley or whatever the Brewers have floating around AAA and AA. Adding someone you could stick at the top of your rotation is still going to cost a pretty penny I'd think.

    I like Waller, but the Twins are good at developing this type of player. If they can package him for high upside starting pitching, I do it. Doesn’t have to be him, but I’m not saying no if he’s what is asked for.

    Most of the Cubs rotation is filled with guys who despite being lesser known, may have the upside to be a top of the rotation arm. Some are currently injured but none sound serious. They have a couple bigger name guys too I guess. Obviously not getting Imanaga. Anyway, they have more starters than they need considering how terrible they are.

    It's definitely trying to be more experimental with it's episodes this year, so the folks who were most into the drama are likely turned off somewhat. But it's season three, even if it was great, the backlash was predictable in today's TV world. Season 1: A few people find a great new show and tell everyone they know about it. Season 2: It starts to build a sizable following and everyone awaits the next season. Season 3: The reviewers and original fans get resentful because they liked when only they were analyzing and talking about the show, and it's way more popular to be a contrarian than to be the last person to think a show is still fun. I'm not saying there's not criticism to be had, but if Breaking Bad season three was playing right now, people would be jumping ship in fear of being accused of being passé.

    I really like Joe Ryan, and I'm not anticipating a dramatic 2nd half fade this year. But I still really want another playoff starter. Not a Carl Pavano or Ervin Santana or Michael Pineda; a guy this team knows isn't a post season ace but is willing to settle for to squeak out a playoff berth. I want an actual strikeout-capable, high-upside starter who when you put him on the mound against Max Scherzer or Gerrit Cole you think, OK, maybe we have a reasonable shot here. If Joe Ryan is that too, all the better. I'm not expecting to get another guy like that, but that's what the goal should be.
