  1. Let's just say that the Pohlads shouldn't complain about losing money...in the long run.
  2. If you send him to Rochester and he blows their playoff chance...whoa! I hope the Twins go with a six-man rotation in September thru season's end. AT this point, keep throwing the guy out there to see what you have. The more games the Twins lose, the more they can spend on draft picks next year, too.
  3. It probably wouldn't have happened to Santana. That was one of those gambles...a player that shuld've never been in the majors, but someone saw something.
  4. Tosoni is sitting here at AA looking for a job soon after getting 40-man roster money. He'll either stay with the Twins (doubtful) or have to go to the indy leagues to see if he can advance to an AAAA contract sometime next yar. Necause he is at AA, his chances of getting anything worthwhile are slim.
  5. Leave Duensing in the bullpen!
  6. It was a good year to sign with the Twins as a minor league free agent! Let's swapout Butera for Towles. Maybe Casilla for Holimon. We pretty much ate up the serviceable pitchers.
  7. I also try and keep track of personnel at http://www.twinscards.com...look at rosters majors/minors. A class and above (plus some stragglers)
  8. I wished they maybe sent him down sooner, when they decided to Plouffe at third base, and let us look at Chang or Holimon as a backup infielder. Let Carroll play short and Casilla second. When Plouffe went down, bring Burroughs back up for a week after trading away Valencia. Yes, we are doing some 40-man shuffling. Dozier will be given every chance to shine again in 2013. Hopefully for the next three weeks he can work on his swing. It seems in the majors he had great bat days and then forgot what to do on he field, and vice versa. And, yes, no one in the wings, especially if the Twins don't keep Casilla around (who should be playing short, but the second coming of Luis Rivas moniker isn't helping him). Going to the minors isn't a bad thing. It allows you to work on certain skill sets more. Unless you fail mightily (look at Tosoni) you are still a prime prospect.
  9. What it shows is that we may be paying out waaaay too much in drafting players that will never reach he majors, or not even start in the majors. Out of the 40 or so drafted each year, 30% usually don't sign, another dozen are cut before they reach high-A ball. Most major league teams work in ONE player a year in a starting role, and ONE pitcher a year, if lucky, in the bullpen (who may be a starter). Another 3-5 may come up to the bigs for a temporary cup-of-coffee and may hang in the system for another year or three. Another 1-2 each year are groomed to become regulars. Even when trading for chips, you never know...but you can pick up another's team million dollar onus baby for a vet easily. And then you have Rule 5, 40-man roster adds which come with a waiver price if you decide to send them back to the minors...there are players out there to look at who are the 26th-28th players on the major league roster but in the minors, or the 41st-45th guys who aren't quite major league ready and not Rule 5 ready either (which Bullock was.....would we be adding him this year to the Twins roster, or risk losing him in the Rule 5). Being a GM is a tough job, you have to juggle so many players and POTENTIAL. And that potential changes every year from level to level.
  10. Sometimes you get lucky and your guys hang around for additional seasons (Waldrop, DeVries). It all depends on the money. Most veteran minor league guys can make $50-60,000. The Twins look pettygood to go after 25-30 guys again, with pretty much all of Rochester disappearing.
  11. Some can play in the other winter leagues like Guerra and Vasquez. An yone sent is probably being added to the 40-man roster this year or next.
  12. Yeah, wouldn't be surprised if DeVries is dropped, and depending on how he returns, Walters. Both getting resigned as minor league free agents, if hey wish. Players like that will be on the bubble. Twins have to decide on Baker and Casilla, and would they keep Manship and, say, let Swarzak walk. Deduno is an interesting guy...a few more starts. And I wouldn't consider Florimon a given........or Butera, if you have to add another catcher. The question is, will the guys then jump ship, rather than stay and give the Twins depth in the minors........And Bromberg and Slama. Really, when you look at the Rule 5 guys and the minor free agents, there isn't much that need protecting.....or that other teams will sweep in and grab.
  13. Why not just keep Toshi as the reserve. We need the 40-man spot, two guys coming off the 60-day shortly which means two players have to be designated for assignment or waived.
  14. Luis Rivas.......
  15. The strange thing is the Twins have to find a roster space for Pavano once he is activated, especially if they still want to try and deep-six him to another team, so someone has to be waived (Tosoni) or maybe Capps just switched to the longer-term DL. And then Waters is rehabbing, too. Pretty much any of the relievers like Gray, Perdomo would go thru w aivers. Imagine the Twins could cut ties with Waldrop, or even Oliveros, early. Probably Tosoni not making the stay.
  16. Collabello is a great story, and I can see the Twins resigning him and trying him at AAA next year, assuming Parmelee isn't back there with Morneau staying put. There is no need to call him up and "waste" a 40-man spot, just to designate him for reassignment. He is, right now, what he is...backup in the minors. I would give him a good look at spring training and hope that he can handle AAA pitching and maybe give him a cup of coffee next year. On a side note: I do wish the Twins were more inclined to do stuff like this September. Remember Jacque Jones...what a thrill it would've been to bring him back as a September callup, for example. If there was one legacy from the Griffith-era, Calvin was great for calling up vets to get them that little extra service time.
  17. Lehmann for Butera. Waloters probably won't be kept. Try to resign him again as a free agent. The Twins have to take a look at Guerra. Sadly, by being injured, Slama for the second year lost opportunities to be with the Twins. I bet the Twins try to remov e Nishi from the 40-man, but they can still keep him if no one claims him. IU see no one coming up that isn't already on the 40-man. The Twins have to make decisions in the fall on players like Hirschfield, Bigley, Bromberg to name a few.
  18. I can see another season of Butera, until one of the other backup catchers mature. Yes, Jeff Gray. What about him. Or Burnett. Or Swarzak. And, Blackburn. You forgot a few.
  19. You wait for him to be non-tendered. A team would be foolish to trade for him unless they truly believe he is worth $5+ million.
  20. The Twins may have to move Parmelee just because he's out of options, and they could extend Morneau and have Mauer. Carbo is an aging temp replacement only problem. Mauer playing first means more games for Doumit behind the plate. Then Willingham DHs more. Yet we can all fear when Hrbek went down after we let Sorrento go (because he was out of options, the 26th man) and Paul tore up baseball for a couple of seasons...
  21. The Twins biggest problem offensively is moving runners and bringing them home, especially with limited outs. And a solid bench so you can have a better chance to get that fly ball, keep out of a double play, sacrifice, or run like hell (Mastro does serve that purpose).
  22. The Twins is 2013: Need to address 2B/SS Carroll/Dozier and someone for backup is adequate. Plouffe at 3B - let's see how he comes back from thumb injury. Revere and Span in the OF -- two very similar players. Do we want more big pop in RF, or settle for getting on base and speed. Bench - non-existent. The Twins, to succeed in 2013, need to improve at-the-plate. Advancing AND scoring runners. Taking more pitches. Running. The possibility exists. Bullpen: A strength. Right now 2-4 suitable long men. A dynamite lefty who can get out one or two batters. Decent setup. Terry Ryan did good trolling last winter. Starting Rotation: Diamond, Deduno, DeVries (potential bullpen longman), Duensing (keep in bullpen, but he throws lefty). I'm not sure Walters will contribue. Hendriks will get to show off some in September. The Twins still need two starters, top of the rotation innings eaters who won't pull up lame. You can spend the money if you wish, and that would be the easiest way -- buy them and hope they pitch to keep 38,000 butts in the stands and everyone who has been performing the latter months of 2012 continue to do so equally.
  23. They had a couple of injuries at Eliz and needed some players. So, why not the two biggies.
  24. There isn't really a lot to look at in September if Terry just brings up 40-man roster guys, and expect the new 40-man roster to be very young. If the offense can advance and score runners, and with the current bullpen candidates, we might be one to two very good healthy starters away from contention, which is all the Twins carry about to put butts in the stands.
  25. Take the plunge and claim Cliff Lee on waivers.......
