  1. You could be Twins tickets for a quarter. Don't know about free shipping, though.
  2. The Twins can sign anyone they want by throwing money at them, but even outrageous sums of money do NO GOOD if they player doesn't want to play with a twice last-place team. The second part of any signing equation is that they will be second fiddle to Mauer in this town. The third part is that the Twins are an attraction to guys on the fringe, minor league free agent, players coming off a bad year, et al who see the Twins as an opportunity for playing time. Hell, even Jeff Gray got a potential upside to play somewhere in the bigs in 2013 because of what he showed as a Twin. The Twins either have ti badly overplay a player top get them here, ot still overpay a modest bit but give someone like Torii Hunter a 3-yhear contract. Considering tghey didn't want to give Cuddy a four..........
  3. The Twins will try and pull a Slama and get Guerra thru waivers at the last minute, probably using him as a filler and dopping him if they sign a free agent. Tosoni will pretty much have to stay with the Twins. His chances of a competing minor league contract are slim to none, that is assuming the Twins want him. The Twins won't give up on Benson, but he could be waived off the 40-man (another team would have to keep him on the 40-man). A lot of smoke and mirrors happen in that phase. The Twins will make some outright cuts from the 40-man. Some guys may not be offered arbitration (Butera, Casilla, Swarzak). Any one added to the 40-man can't be cut until the season starts. But anyone currently on the 40-man can be dropped as you go thru free-agent signings and into spring training. I;m waiting to see if the Twins get a bug jump, like they did last year, in siging minor league dree agents. At least they didn't pepper their roster with the Garys, Florimons, Maloneys, Vasquezs like they did last year...adding them to the 40-man efiore seasons end, only to drop them (and add a couple back).
  4. Last year the Twins had a contract with Blackburn, were paying a disabled Baker, somehow was eating $$$ with Toshi, Marquis was a bust here and adequate elsewhere. Not to mention the expensive look at Zumaya. Then you had Capps and Pavano not making their salary. We are strapped with the Mauer contract which is 1/4 of payroll. Morneau is an expensive liability, Just need to spend wisely. The other $100 million, the Twins need to spend on drafting, besides paying down their own debt to make the team even more profitable. Sadly, attendance can take a hit in 2013, which also means concessions take a hit, et al. And with no big names, you don't sell more jerseys and such. Be interesting to see the TwinsFest buzz this season.
  5. Don't complain about what we got from the White Sox. Got two players that will contribute something. Liriano was a dead arm. If the Twins (or the White Sox) wished to keep Liriano, they would be on the hook for much more than he is currently worth. The only factor in considering Liriano is that he HAS to pitch well next season if he wants to make big money or get a long-term contract. He HAS to pitch the best he ever has. The upside is that he may come cheap, and of he shines, you can flip him for a couple of players. If he pitches okay, you can still flip him, possibly, for a couple of players. Man, I could see the Astros signing Clemens, getting a bunch of wanna-bees (Liriano and Young, for example), selling some season tickets, and still flipping guys for more promise and hope.
  6. Liriano will probably only get a single season offer, might hit $3.5-4 million, but probably with a backend team (or maybe even the Astros). I doubt that he'll be signable for a multi-year and his agent will be stepping all over him to actually pitch in 2013 if he wants to make big bucks. So i might be a good year to gamble on him. Here's a guy in for a big letdown...starting 2012 with the thought that he'd easily make $8-10 and probably sign a $36-40 million multi-season deal. Yes, Francisco and Delmon are both in for a rude awakening...and look for them on-the0field in KC, Pittsburgh, Colorado or Houston. But not Minnesota!
  7. It's pretty darn perfect. Of course, the option is resigning Butera as a free agent to a much lower salary than he would get in arbitration, and the chances of him getting a million from anyone else should be slim or none. Also, we must ask how bad the need is for a third catcher.
  8. Benson's time with the Twins may have come and gone. You hope for a good showing, and a nice glimpse if someone is injured in 2013. and then use for potential trade bait...as you do have others on his heels. of course, that is assuming he doesn 't become Mike Trout and you still want to stay with, say, Revere.
  9. The bigger question is who takes over at Rochester. I really wouldn't advance anyone in the system. We know Jake Mauer is on a somewhat fast trak, but that may be pushing it too much.
  10. Molitor, I believe, openly expressed in the past that he didn't want the on-the-road grind. As a Twins instructor, he gets to work now-and-then. But his situation may have changed and he would like to be a big-league manager, and get on that road. Bench coach would suit him well.
  11. Matt LeCroy seems fairly happy coaching by where he lives. Redmond would be great, but Cuellar will be the bullpen coach, until he moves into the pitching coach position. I'm surprised that Molitor isn't a shoo-on as bench coach. I doubt that Jake Mauer is ready to come to the big league roster...yet. Sometimes a total housecleaning would be so much easier. Gardy does need some input, as they largely report to him. I doubt that Gladden or Coomer would leave the media world behind. Better yet, who do the Twins bring into Rochester. And I sure wish Vavra and,Ullger were just minor league rovers.........
  12. My understanding is that Molitor didn't like being a coach when he was with Seattle because of the time living there and being on the road. He took a job as a roving instructor because he could be home more and just drop in on other towns. Now that his family has aged, he is more available to the day-to-day travel grind of baseball. Or so I seem to remember.
  13. Kyle Waldrop!
  14. Gardy will lobby for Rick Anderson as Kelly always had Dick Such in his back pocket. Jerry White could easily find a new job anywhere. Scott Ullger needs to go somewhere where he might be a rising star. I don't think he would be heir toi Gardy these days if he stays here. Vavra might be best suited as the minorleague head batting coaxh, something he has done well as in the past, or the bench coach, which is still a hitting coach persay. Steve Liddle may wish to just retire. Stele needs to retire (sadly) and you could even have Cueller come up and do what he did in Pittsburgh, be the bullpen coach. I don't think you have to go outside the organization. And maybe Gladden, Molitor, Frank Viola might wish jobs...who knows. The Twins are pretty darn good with their roving instructors (past Killebrew, current Molitor, Carew, Oliva).
  15. Yes, it is. What is the price of a 33-year-old reliever. Can you find a comparable non-closer. Burton, is, sadly in the make $2-4 million and shut up. He may be given closer duties (think Rauch or Hawkins) but will never get a permanent job at his age....because of track record. A team wouldmore than likely try an upcomer than just reward him with the higher paying job.
  16. Stele could be replaced (sadly, but let us be realistic). Ullger should move on to somewhere that might offer him management opportunities...he is NOT heir to Gardy. Vavra could move aside. Liddle leave on his own. Bring back Redmond. Promote Bruno. Do something.....
  17. He will also be 32 entering free agent and coming off another year as a bullpen set-up guy. He would, if successful in 2013, get monies along the lines of Crain or Guerrier, if luck....$3-4 million a year. He isn't tradable if signed to a long-term contract and flops in 2013...another team will just wait to see if he is released before giving him a chance and the Twins would always be on hook for most of the contract. Tough decision. If the Twins can sign him for 2 with a third-year option vs. buyout, I'd go for it.
  18. You can better spend any of the money. No need to even pay a Capps $2 million. He may be worth that, but bullpen at any price above that, for the moment, is not a necessity. I would rather see the Twins go after, say, a Jon Rauch again if there was the need. But Starting pitching and middle infield are the two places you need to spend. Spend Pavano and Baker money on one pitcher, spend Capps and Casilla money (and Marquis) on another. There, that was easy........... Next year you can spend Toshi and Blackburn money on yet another pitcher or hitter......
  19. You can attract players, but the first stop is contract money and second is playing for a winner. 2-3-4 years or more. Or, you wait out and sign people to a one-year.
  20. Y'know, this is a no-brainer. Even coming into this year, I think Carroll knew he MIGHT not be the regular, as he hasn't REALLY been a regular, but is capable of playing 2nd/SS/3rd for extended periods if need be. Carroll seems contnt and happy with this role. Considering the Twins seem to want to try out other alternatives at any of those positions, he is nice to have around for at least another year, and if someone does step-up, he is tradebait. The Twins probably could've moved his salary this summer, but for his production and attitude, he is worthwhile to keep in the organization. Of course, looking towards a 2014 option at age 40 next season might create a different attitude come next mid-summer if someone is looking for a quick utility player. He works hard, has a great attitude, and it is always nice to have a veteran with those qualities in the clubhouse. RIght now, I would rather carry the aging Carroll, than a much younger Alexi, even if the salary is the close to the same.
  21. I really don't see any movement of anybody. Seems pretty stale, unless someone takes a manager job somewhere...and overall the minor league seasons were pretty decent for the teams.....
  22. Oh, we could bring Jason Bartlett (and probably Orlando Hudson) back into the mix, too. And maybe a Mr. Guzman is getting hungry again!
  23. I would say Luis Rivas II...steals bases, has some pop when plays a lot, but totally inconsistent at the plate. You could make an argument about why you pay Carroll $2.5 million to do pretty much the same (yes, there are subtle positive differences with Carroll). Casilla will grab on with someone at a reduced salary, probably bounce between the majors and minors. I doubt that he'll ever start fulltime...unless he sets his sights on say Houston for 2013. Major leagues rules and such priced him out of the Twins marketplace for next season. So, who is going to be the translator now for Florimon?
  24. Okay, who are the top 25. The bigger question is will the market be able to pay out that much money for that much starting pitching. I doubt it. So could some bargains, or some nice backend deals.
