  1. Yes, putting a ball in play can also cause the forceout or double-play. If he is batting #2, he has to have the ability to sacrifice. If he leads off, he has to figure out a way to totally tilt the slap-hit or bunt to his favor...he can assume he MIGHT beat out any grounder in the infield.
  2. Revere has to prove an able Span replacement. He steals bases, but so does Casilla,,so does Mastro. Span has shown consistency. Revere has yet to do so and if he doesn't finish the season above .300, he is just another cog in the system. Revere does have a smile, coves ground and is enthusiastic. But with Hicks, Arcia (and still Benson) in the wings...do you stay with two more years of Span (who is only tradable during the season) or the exciting basepath promise of Revere. Revere is exciting, but he has to learn to bunt or chop, And take more pitches (shades of Carlos Gomez).
  3. There is no reason Baker can't and shouldn't take the buyout and see if someone else offers him a 20-year contract with incentives. The Twins have to convince people they can win to get people to sign with them, period.
  4. I like Zodiac. Of course, we need stellar years from an aging Willingham, Plouffe has to be a year-round third sacker, and the Twins hav to find something to fill 2B/SS/ Can Parmelee shine as a future Cuddyer in RF? The strength is the bullpen. Enough arms to run thru 7-10 pitchers during the season. Do the Twins need a lefty starter? Okay, they need 5 starters.
  5. Redmond (and Tom Prince) would come up and do a nice sacrifice. You didn't lose everything when you needed to start them. Same with Henry Blanco. Keeping a guy around for less that 100 at bats...no. Let's have someone who can pinch hit, field decently, and play another position. Maybe time f\or Drew to become a relief pitcher?
  6. The Twins see a NEED for a left-handed starter and they don't have one. But I would rather see them promote and drag out David Bromberg and have him take his licks ala Hendriks and leave Duensing as the long-man in the pen, where he has been brilliant. Will be interesting to see how arbitration goes. But this crapola that oozes in the Twins organization that you need a power hitter at this position, a contact pitcher in this spot, a lefty doing this, we need to keep a guy who ran out of options etc. rather than just field the best team possible with players playing their best at certain positions......arrgh!
  7. I don't think so...he starts in Arizona soon and they want players there for the duration. He's not on the 40-man and no need to add him early. The Twins would do better to just add Rivera or Towles, if need be. Remember quite a few years ago when LeCroy was on his last legs in the minors and had gone home, but was recalled just-in-case after batting a pitiful .190+ at AAA after his return from Washington. Got like 7 games of work. But then the Twins have the 40-man roster full. Maybe they could finally then move Capps to the 60-day if they wanted to add someone else. I would give it to Rivera...as a bonus for sticking with the Twins another season........
  8. Capps could come back for $6 million right away or $2.5 if the Twins wait him out!!!!!
  9. Guerra is out of options. Manship will be out of options. Is Swarzak arbitration eligible? Burton will be a keeper...if he stays healthy he can be flipped. DeVries could be in the long-relief mix. Robertson has options. Blackburn is owed money. Waldrop is also out of options, I believe. The Twins have some guys they need to worry about more than Perdomo. I bet the Twins put Slama on the 40-man. Will they DFA Carlos Gutierrez and Lester Oliveros?
  10. We got a whole slew of backups and need at least one stud from outside of the organization for 2b/SS and hope Plouffe can hit homers and equal his 2012 play for another season. Carroll and one plus an organizational outsider. The other two join Tosi at AAA for most of the season.
  11. If he needs a rest....go for it. But it would be nice if he is on the field in someway during the homestands.
  12. Willingham...decent contract. Doumit...has shown that he can catch and continues to hit. Mauer will always be in demand but basically unaffordable. Morneau...teams are going to wish they had overpayed for him in July. Perkins...has a reasonable contract and can be a lefty or possible closer. Revere is over Span right now. Span's value is when a team is desparate for a replacement player. Twins missed it not trading him in July. Deduno has come out of nowhere...but would have to be packaged with, say, a Plouffe or Parmelee.
  13. This trade deadline was the time to move Span, sadly, probably packaged with another player or two to really drive up value at the moment. Now, you compete against free agents, both great and adequate. And being injured again, although it is keeping him from plummeting his average like ti did lat season, raises questions. The Twins would probably be better served with more punch than speed in two of the outfield spots, and leav ing the punchless middle infield intact.
  14. There is a difference between making throws from third to any base, and just catching them.
  15. If the Twins are going to competitive next year and actually sign an arm of two that will be around for at least three seasons, yes, explore something for the 2B/SS/3B position. You can hope that Plouffe bats an acceptable .240 with 20 homers and a few more rbis. You would like some speed eitehr at 2B/SS, as Alexi has shown, but a bit more in the BA department, as well as the ability to over runners around. Dozier hasn't impressed in the field. Florimon not much better. Carroll is the parfect utility guy. But if the Twins aren't competitive, then don't purchase any starters yet. Give guys more of a look. Have a payroll of $70 million and lots of empty seats to go with your announced attendance of 25,000 a game.
  16. Yeah, it doesn't really make sense. But they got another year of him in the system by not 40-manning him, something similar to what they did with Kyle Waldrop and, also, Cole DeVries. Be interesting to see if they try it with Carlos Gutierrez this fall.
  17. You have to also look at the season ticket base, and what happens to the tickets those people don't want. This year, it has taken a while, but people are buying their single game tickets now on stubhub, not the 5,000+ the Twins still have available for every game. My wife and I are also reconsidering our season ticket desire. This was a tough year as jobs made us miss more games in our packet than the norm. We managed to not lose ANY money yet on our ticket resales, which is a plus, actually turning a profit on a couple. Next year, don't see that happening at all. Next year, we see the opportunity to, eprhaps, buy tickets for a game for as little as $5, or a buck. Who knows. The incentive today is the CHANCE to buy A TICKET for the All-Star game. But the strip could cost as much as your season ticket package. This year they are offering a 10% discount on concessions and such. Already get the free magazine and yearbook. I get free pop being a designated driver. I will save a half-buck on my hot-dog. It will be interesting to see how the season ticket base turns out. Like myself, weighing the games assigned for me to go to versus just being able to wak up and buy a ticket (or purchase easily on stubhub -- amazing place, folks......). This month, go to a weeknite game with 30,000 in attendance and roughly count the empty seats.
  18. Okay, this year Revere is a better #2 hitter...well, isn't Mauer always batting third. You see some better pitches. As a lead-off guy, they come at him right out of the gate. He has to improve what he looks at tremendously to hold down the lead-off position. Span, you pretty much know what you've got...except that he has now broken down for the second year. Wouldn't you feel better right now having Span sitting on someone else's bench and a solid pitcher in our rotation? Span had more worth during the trade deadline. In the off-season, he is just another player competing against a slew of free agent outfielders and other trade bait. Now you have to ask the worth of Revere as a trading chip compared to Span. And WiIllingham will still be the guy everyone wants.
  19. Well, Slama got thru the system last year because he was injured, which also hurt his chances for a call-up at the end of 2011. Seems that when he got injured this year, he deep-sixed his big opportunity. He came back gangbusters, but the Twins see the need to have a longer look at Waldrop and others. But think about this, to escape the Rule 5 the Twins just need to add Slama to the 40-man. They do this is November and its for 2013. There is really no reason to add him for 2012. They still have the options of sending him up and down. And (correct me if I am wrong) he was only on the 40-man in 2010 and 2011, so the Twins can still have another year even to fool with him if he continues to shore an upsize, 2014. Shades of Pat Neshek for an aging reliever that may shine for a few years for minimal pay. Maybe management knows how to run things more than, say, us fans!
  20. I just had a thought. Slama was on the 40-man in 2010 and 2011. If the Twins added him this year...they would eat up a year. Because of injury, Slama basically played himself, out of an early opportunity to join the bullpen, compared to some others (doesn't explain Guerra) that the Twins wish to make decisions on for next season (Manship, Waldrop and any number of free agents). But the Twins CAN add Slama to the 2013 40-man roster, and still have not just one, but two more seasons of up-and-downs options with the pitcher. So, like the decision on Hicks and others, they are waiting until they need to sort out the 40-man in November. Considering the number of guys on the bubble, this is a meeting I would love to be, when the time comes. It also allowed them to have a spot to do another Gray/Maloney/Vasquez/Florimon pickup in this final month of the season.
  21. The Twins may actually be waiting to add Slama as a 40-man guy for the 2013 season rather than waste a year by adding him this year. So that might be good news. Again, anyone added in November can't be cut until after spring training, so you need some dead bodies to cut if you add free agents.
  22. And so many of the guys, starting with the already demoted Thomas, Gray and Maloney, and adding such folks as Walters, Perdumo, let's throw in Butera, Carson, Manship, the injured Gutierrez and Oliveros -- to name but a few would be unclaimed and available again, or easily replaceable by other ilk in the systems. And why not give recognition and expsoure to guys IN your system that you have promoted and supposedly believed in -- Guerra, Slama, Bigley even.
  23. For a game like Tuesday, nice to have a big roster/ Question regarding Slama, if not going to use him for what he really is, why have him close games at Rochester...why not just use him as a 7th inning guy and give those important innings to supposed guys you think might help the team. Have him up here. See if he has worked on stuff. Maybe he is the closer in 2013.....and Perk can remain as setup with Burton.
  24. Hey, if someone picks up Slama in the Rule 5, the Twins get 50-grand for him, and if he fails, they don't have to take him back. Is that win-win for the current regime? On another note...every player called up in September makes what, $50,000 + road room/board?
