  1. I don't really like them myself. They're fun to watch, but I do see them as more of an extension of the regular season. Aces would still likely pitching in a game 163. I also view a 163rd game as more exciting than the wild card games. That's just my opinion. I don't really get too bent out of shape about it though and I'm certainly not loud about it. I think the bigger reason that I don't care much for them is that baseball says "we need to shorten the postseason time frame" and then went and added games to it. It's nonsensical and backwards. Clearly it's a money reason rather than baseball reason. I'd rather they just be honest about it rather than talking out both sides of their mouths. I'm not trying to argue with anyone. I'm just conveying my opinion on the matter.
  2. The Cubs may have finished strong, but were able to take the foot off of the gas peddle so to speak. Momentum is a powerful weapon, in my view, so getting into the wild card spot needing to win is more beneficial than clinching really early and allowing to heal up.
  3. Admittedly, I'm a bit biased, but I worry that the Cubs peaked too early. I usually like a team that had a good surge into the playoffs like the Mets and Giants. I'm going with the Giants over the Rangers.
  4. I'd have to go with Dozier myself. That being said, I think it's far more important for the franchise to see Vargas and Buxton even on that list.
  5. Welcome aboard and good luck with the rebuild. We're pretty hungry for some good baseball by the home team around here.
  6. If Mauer did retire, and assuming Park and/or Vargas weren't traded, I'd let Sano, Vargas, and Park duke it out in spring training. At this point, I'd pick Vargas to win the 1B job based on defense, Sano to DH (somewhat unfortunately) and unless Park shows great improvement, I'd send him back to Rochester or try to trade him. I really like the Justin Turner idea though. That would get my approval.
  7. To some extent that is true, but the pitching staff needs to be almost completely rebuilt. That isn't going to happen in one offseason. In my view, down to the studs isn't exclusive to the players. The coaching staff needs to be overhauled and the front office will have some turnover. It shouldn't take as long here as it did in Chicago however. As you said, there are many pieces in place, but whether they pan out remains to be seen as well.
  8. This is a similar approach to what the Twins should be looking at. It'll take some patience, and it'll take a little bit of time, but there is a formula to follow. Those guys earned that extension. Good for them...this is coming from a Cardinals fan.
  9. This might be the most depressing post that have ever been posted on TD. It's like getting multiplier bonuses in a video game, only the multiplier is a negative.
  10. Yeah, there's really no reason that Murphy shouldn't be playing every day. Zuke and Centeno have been up all season, you know what you've got in Centeno and Zuke won't be here next year. Same story, different young player.
  11. I could use a locksmith to unlock the secrets to the deliciousness that is an orange...and also why they insist on squirting their juice in my eyes when I peel them. They're aim is impeccable. Got Santana on the bump. Should be a good one!
  12. Why the long face?
  13. I missed the game completely, but noticed that Berrios got an early hook while perusing the box score. I looked at the play by play for the inning and was just as puzzled, so it's interesting to me that you bring it up. Knowing that this is relatively common for Molitor to do to Berrios (among others too), I tend to chalk it up to Molitor not having the patience to allow a kid to work through his struggles and learn at the major league level. To echo gunnarthor's comment, on a team that needs to rely on it's youth to get out of this chasm they've put themselves in, the level of impatience is a fireable offense in my book. Maybe Molitor does a fantastic job in another managerial situation, but the situation that the Twins are in currently is not one of those. It just doesn't seem to be the right fit.
  14. Maybe somebody killed him? But who?
  15. Accomplishments are important, after all.
  16. So you're to blame! {shakes fist angrily}
  17. I attended Saturday's game. I was actually a little disappointed that I wasn't able to witness the 100th loss in person.
  18. As a guy that doesn't get into many of the advanced metrics, I can't agree with this enough. Old fashioned eye tests and gut feeling still need to have a place. Stats are just another tool to use in evaluating talent.
  19. This. For a team that doesn't reside in a large market, developing their own pitching is a must in order to stay competitive over the long haul. That's how the Rays were able to maintain their run of excellence. Most teams cannot simply go buy pitching talent every offseason, so developing that talent is a must.
  20. Drafting is certainly not the only definitive failure when it comes to the pitching staff. My take on the homegrown thing is this: pitching is more expensive and harder to come by than position players, typically. Being able to develop your own staff is advantageous because you can focus your financial resources on the position players instead of constantly chasing something that is more difficult to find/acquire. As always though, there is more than one way to skin a cat.
  21. i was an RA for 3 years. Free room and board. I earned my spending money over the summer building lake homes in the Fergus Falls area. I'd give myself a monthly allowance. By the third year, I couldn't afford enough beer to be able to make my ire towards the 500 freshmen I lived with go away. That may be why I'm a whiskey drinker now.
  22. And would anyone actually care if it did? Besides those posting on this thread I suppose.
