  1. I'd rather he not. I'd prefer him to decline the assignment and become a free agent. I don't know from whom, but Shoemaker is just stealing innings from someone that might actually help the big league club in the future. Happ joining him only makes it worse.
  2. So much for carrying the positive momentum through the break... Man, what a plummet back to reality.
  3. I'm all for getting Gordon reps, even in CF, but with Celestino on the bench and the 2 spot not up for another couple of innings, it's certainly a questionable decision in that spot.
  4. Yup. This was a case of an infielder playing outfield. Still should have been caught, but perhaps a bit more understandable. That really doesn't make it any less irritating though. Kudos for Schoop running that ball out. Goes to show that you never really know what will happen, so play hard until the end.
  5. ...and this team finds yet another ridiculous way to lose a game. You can't make this stuff up.
  6. It's been a weird season for me. I can't watch games on TV (Hulu subscriber) and I can't always listen on the radio. Even attending games has been difficult this year. I do usually find a way to at least check into a game somehow though. The teams play only compounds much of my other frustrations surrounding the season. So, it's kind of a love/hate relationship that I have with baseball this season. Even so, it's still great to be able to talk baseball, whether it be here or at the water cooler.
  7. Pitching, even with velocity, is an art form. Good pitchers have the ability to hit their spots when the want/need to and can throw multiple pitches for strikes when they need to. Velocity helps cover up weakness in the location aspect, but that doesn't make them good at pitching. Ultimately, pitching is, and always will be, about keeping hitters off balance. Velocity is just one part of that.
  8. It could be said that it's unusual for them to reach base 5 times at all...:) But to answer the question, in a game like this one it's not ridiculous.
  9. Nice to take some positivity into the break. Hopefully that will carry over on the flip side because that stretch promises to be taxing on the pitching staff.
  10. Wondering if it's legal to cross state lines with Scotch for @Squirrel?

  11. Without names, I'm not sure that I trust these "sources"! What does Stu expect me to do? Math?!?
  12. My psyche probably could have done without reading this...yikes! It probably doesn't matter, but the team is in a different position than it's been since this FO took over. It remains to be seen if they actually take advantage of being a seller rather than a (timid) buyer.
  13. Love this quote from him: “I think my favorite part is the relationship you form with the pitchers. I take a lot of pride in that. It’s not about me back there. My job is to get the best out of those guys. For me, I try to be there for them if they want me to catch extra. Get to know them off the field. What’s their personality? And most important, what is their stuff like?” That's an impressive perspective from a guy his age. I look forward to seeing how he works through the system. Thanks for the write up, Seth!
  14. Just as "meaningless" as run prevention. They're both important.
  15. I think this deadline will be as interesting as any deadline in recent memory. And not all for good reasons, but interesting nonetheless. Between the CBA expiring, the economic aftermath of COVID and now the sticky stuff implications, I'm very curious to see how trades materialize, particularly for pitchers. As for the Twins in particular, I tend to think that the price for Berrios should be sky high. Donaldson's return will likely depend on how salary the Twins will eat. The direction that the FO takes in trading players under contract beyond next season will tell us what they're plan moving forward is.
  16. The big thing with that inning is that both of the walks scored, albeit aided by the defensive blunders. But they scored nonetheless. Those two runs alone beat the Twins. Berrios had a very good game, but the box score doesn't tell you everything. Those walks were huge. Going against Rodon, there's no guarantee that a team will score much. Especially true when that team is the Twins.
  17. I'd keep Kepler, for now. I'd like to see how he does the rest of the season before making any real judgements. Will he be more like 2019 or 2020? Obviously right now he's the 2020 version. If that's the case, maybe try to trade him and see if anyone bites. I hate that this team always seems to sell low (if at all), but at this point, I'm not sure timing matters.
  18. Interestingly enough, Gordon has only played one game in his professional career at 3B. 2016 with Ft. Myers where he had three chances with a PO, an assist and an error. I'm not sure that proves anything either way, I just found it interesting since I didn't think Gordon had ever played the hot corner. At this point, getting him in a game should be a priority anyway. If that's who they throw over there if Donaldson is traded, fine by me. I know that I don't want Sano there and I'm not crazy about Arraez there. I'm still leery about Miranda at this point. I'd be fine if they brought him up, but I think I'd rather see Gordon get some reps there first. Assuming he's not getting reps elsewhere due to other trades anyway.
  19. That's fine in the short term, though I wouldn't like it either. Most definitely NOT for the long term. I do wonder what his playing time would look like if the team were healthier, but that's a topic for a different thread.
  20. In fairness, I don't think this discussion revolves around the recent disdain. It should/would be happening regardless of recent events. He's an asset that can be traded and potentially help other areas. I tend to agree with your overall point though. The lack of solid option at 3B is a problem for me too. There's potential it could be more problematic than intended.
  21. Too early to label the FO a failure. There's enough there to retool, especially with position players. I'm not convinced there is with pitching, but that's another discussion. What to do with Polanco is a question in and of itself though. Assuming that Donaldson, Simmons and even Sano (doubtful) are all dealt, is there enough infield depth to replace an entire infield? Obviously, something that can help would need to come back in a deal somewhere. I like Polanco (at 2B, not SS), but I'm not opposed to dealing him because I do think he has decent value. Tearing down an entire infield feels more like a rebuild rather than a retool though. Regarding Buxton and Berrios, this question will hang over this team until they're either extended or gone. However, it's an important one to answer to determine the direction of the team long term. If they're both gone, the team has further to go to reach serious contender status. There's already too much to do on the pitching side.
  22. Good write-up, Seth. I agree with your take on the playoffs. I think it would be more beneficial to have those extra 10 games or so. Surely, it's more fun to have the playoffs and the push to make them though. And they do provide an "education" of their own as well. But, I think to have all of the minor league affiliates playing those extra games is probably the better idea in general. Game reps are important for development.
  23. I'm not against trading Donaldson. In many aspects, as pointed out in the post, it makes a lot of sense. I disagree with the notion that he can be replaced though. I don't feel that he is a luxury either. The FO made a concerted effort to upgrade the infield defense. He was part of that. He may not have been the primary target, and I've never been crazy about the signing, but he's a pretty good pivot move. I think moving Sano back to 3B or playing Arraez there regularly is a rather large regression. One can hope that Miranda can fit that bill sooner rather than later, but I'd like to see more than just a two month white hot streak before I depend on him. These are fine for a short term answer for the rest of the season, but I'm leery about the long-term outside of Miranda. None of this is really the point though and the benefits of dealing Donaldson probably outweigh them. Any salary relief must be reinvested. I'm not one that feels that it'll be a difference maker in bring back Berrios or Buxton, but it certainly can't hurt. Regardless, they've got a mess of a pitching staff that also needs to be dealt with this offseason. So, if they can unload him and get some salary relief and maybe some lottery tickets too, then that's the correct call. I can deal with the short term question marks.
  24. As if it weren't obvious already, I think I'll go ahead and book that fall vacation now. I certainly don't need the money, or the availability, for playoff games... Probably a good thing that Monday's game was rained out or they'd be even further in the hole.
