  1. We disagree. I don't believe the offense Doumit contributes while catching is anywhere near the deficit from his defense while catching.
  2. All of this is the randomness of small sample size. It takes nearly a full season for OPS to stabilize. The wider variation that Plouffe has shown in monthly splits isn't meaningful. He isn't as good as his best monthly split or as poor as his worst. Taking as whole you get a guy who hits a little above the median team production for 3Bs while fielding poorly. At his age, both can get a little better and rank in the middle of third basemen.
  3. The Yankees and Dodgers also have the resources to spend more on catcher yet choose inexpensive defenders. Does the Twins decision to sign and extend Doumit make sense for an inexperienced pitching staff? Wouldn't the Twins staff be much more in need of care? Doumit costs the Twins more than the Yankees, Rays or Dodgers spend on their catching core. It is not simply inexpensive solutions. The Pirates signed Martin and he's made a tremendous difference.
  4. In the last few years some teams choosing defense over offense at catcher. Look at the Rays decision to sign Jose Molina and give him more playing time at 37 and 38 than any other time in his career. He can't hit. The Dodgers roster the light hitting Federowicz over Ramon Hernandez knowing that they would be giving up offense. They value Butera and his defense highly enough to give up a prospect. The Yankees fill their catching position this year with light hitting defensive minded catchers. As the Twins make roster decisions about catcher I hope they make defense a greater priority and show it with their roster decisions.
  5. Plouffe's OPS and wOBA are a few points above the median team OPS and wOBA from the thirdbase. His defense brings him down. If he has any growth left at the plate, he can be an average 3B. If not, he has enough bat against lefties to move to 1B or corner OF as a platoon player.
  6. I hope the Twins make changes to pitching throughout the organization starting with Rick Anderson.
  7. It doesn't take long to be sidetracked back to the same topic in every threads. Any thoughts on moving the hard throwing pitchers earlier? How are the A's and Rays finding success in their young pitchers? They all haven't dominated the minors. Should the Twins move Alex Meyers to the majors in April? How many bullets should he waste in the minors. I would say the same about May if he has success in the AFL hitting haven.
  8. It is individual but Verlander was 23 in his first full season. Jimenez pitched half a season at 23 and full time at 24. It is Meyer time. Any domination of AAA is a waste of bullets.
  9. Other solutions... Abreau Sano (no guarantee he can play 3B) Plouffe I really think it will be Mauer. Brain injuries trump stubborn.
  10. Contemplating Archer, Moore, Price, Cobb, Helickson, Griffin, Parker, Malone, Strailey, Gray... Those guys all came up young. While most had good strikeout numbers they weren't all dominating in the minors. They didn't show perfect command before they arriving. I think Alex Meyer needs to start with the club next April. I think we are seeing some teams calling up pitchers younger while they still have most of their bullets left. You certainly see it in the Rays an A's. I don't think the Twins should worry as much about service time with pitchers. Injuries are much more frequent. I also think they need to have Trevor May on the team even if it means he is in the bullpen while working on a third pitch. A study or two is in order. What happens to velocity as pitchers age? What is the growth curve for a pitcher? Is it the same for hard throwers? In any case, the Twins need to do something different. They have shown no ability to develop pitching. They need to look at the whole organization from Anderson on down. They need to make some changes.
  11. Very similar to the Santana situation last year. He has a team option for next year. If the Pirates decide not to pick up the option, they may look for anything they can get before releasing. Since Houston is picking up 5.5 million though, I think the Pirates will pick up the option.
  12. The Rays traded two years of James Shields for Wil Myers. It is going to take at least Sano and probably others to get Price.
  13. Some perspective... The big time free agent was 36. He was coming off three years of ERAs above league average. The previous two were well above. He was signed to a one year contract with options that were much lower than the base. This was written at the time... "At age 35 -- he'll turn 36 in May -- Morris is likely past his prime. He hasn't had a winning season or an earned run average below 4.50 since 1988. But his second half last season -- 9-9, 3.94 ERA, two shutouts, one one-hitter -- showed he still can pitch effectively." Wouldn't a one year Johan Santana signing this winter be very similar? Johan would be a year younger than Jack. He hasn't had a good season for three years. I looked for a different comp that was healthy but there aren't very many guys that put up ERA+ of 79 and 89 and continue getting the ball every fifth day. I thought maybe a guy like Buerhle but he has performed much better the last three years.
  14. The demand and value of starting pitching was made clear at the trade deadline. Starting pitching is the best currency in baseball.
  15. Dozier certainly saw better pitches with Mauer behind him. Not much in this line up to protect anyone.
  16. Can anyone think of a recent trade of a 2B that netted a good return? Uggla was traded following a monster 2010 season for Florida. He netted another 2B in Infante and a LOOGY. Infante was coming off his best season, but he was 28 and mostly had a career in a utility role. Teams can always find a way to fill 2B. No one is going to be desperate for Dozier or Rosario. Starting pitching is the best currency in baseball followed by shortstop and centerfield. If Castro is made available, the Cubs will be looking for starting pitching.
  17. I was trying to find it. I would guess they hit poorly in every situation. With some very poor hitters in the line up it must be easy to pitch around better hitters. Those hitters either take a walk or try to be aggressive and swing at a pitch difficult to hit.
  18. I am with you on the scouts. However, we will never really know what the scouts reported to Ryan. I do feel that the Twins have 40 million of space in the budget before they are really stretched beyond their market and revenues. I would direct all of that towards Tanaka or front loading bonus in an Abreau contract. They need to add that one key piece for 2014 and the future with a greater burden next year and flexibility to add in future years. It won't be near enough for 2014, but will show commitment towards rebuilding a winning team. I will never know what the scouts report. Short of that, I expect the biggest play they can make. To me, that is 40 million for 2014 split between posting fee (30 million) and year one salary (10 million).
  19. So if he doesn't check out, you are OK with the Twins not bidding.
  20. What posting fee would you expect of the Twins? It is easy to take a position after the fact tht the Twins should have gone higher? The Twins don't luxury of knowing the winning bid. So should the Twins put all of their 2014 eggs in the Tanaka basket? Would a post of 30 million and salary next year of 10 million be enough? The contract will run several more years but the burden on 2014 would be the most difficult. That's my bid. 40 million on the books for next year. Go young for 2014. Add more in 2015 when the posting fee burden is gone. If another team goes higher I have no complaints.
  21. Terry states disappointment about the offense, but he should have known. The drop in offensive production was in the projections last November. That was even prior to the Span and Revere trades. A portion of this blog entry detailed the concern about the offense. Projecting the Twins: Early 2013 ZIPS - Blogs - Minnesota Twins News & Rumors Forum The Twins did nothing in the offseason to address the offense. It's production should not be a surprise. With an OPS+ of 92 the offense has contributed at least as much to the poor record as the pitching.
  22. Seems like game threads are serving a purpose and entertaining some. Probably no need for a second place to hang out. There are other places to chat about the game and strategy if that is the interest.
  23. I have changed my mind as I read the posts about the budget. I have come to believe that season ticket holders need a better team next year even at the cost of the future. I fear the risk of players to large contracts only to have them ineffective or injured when they are needed in 2016-2017. I think it gives the Twins a better chance of fielding a very good team by timing the signings after the base has major league experience. However I realize that if something isn't done to make this team better next year, revenues will decline. Declining revenues could prevent the possibility of signing players in the future. It is better to try to be competitive every year instead of trying to time it to build a very good team in the future. Maybe they will get lucky one of these years and make the playoffs. Maybe they will just hang out around .500 every year with a mix of improving young players and declining old players. In any case, the act of making moves and signing a good free agent will generate ticket sales. Those revenues are needed and the season ticket holders deserve the attempt to be competitive.
  24. The Twins can't cut it. Mauer has a brain injury. It may not be responsible to play Mauer at catcher any longer. Even if they do, he may be one shot to the mask away from ending a career in baseball or at least as a catcher. The Twins have to have a plan. They need to know if Pinto can handle the spot defensively. If not, they need to find someone who can.
  25. Do the game threads serve their intended purpose?
