  1. Which is better for the team? Keeping this kind of stuff in house or using the press to call out players?
  2. Three terrible seasons and really not enough talent to expect more. This year is different. His performance and retention needs to be judged by wins. I would set the bar at 85. I think he will get there.
  3. When Pinto returns, there has to be a plan where he will be used regularly. There is no other solution long term for catcher.
  4. Nice game today though. Single, double, walk so far. Nice to see a typical Mauer game. I hope he can string several together.
  5. I would have expected Suzuki to hustle every play. There was no reason for that to be a close play. He needs to hustle out of the box. I hope we don't need the runs.
  6. The Twins goal this year is to win. 75 wins isn't winning. It isn't progress either. It would only be progress if the players responsible for winning 75 games were a core of young players improving together. If the goal is winning, the minimum bar must be 85 wins. Anything less than that really isn't a contender. Failure to meet that goal should mean change of the on field and front office staffs. I will acknowledge the goal may be to evaluate where the team is in 6 weeks. At that point, trading off decline phase veterans and handing the bulk of the playing time to younger players like Pinto. Meeting that goal means actually trading the decline phase assets and a manager willing to play the younger players even when presented with veteran options. Goals need to be met. No excuses this year.
  7. This may be his post concussion skill level at this point. I would bat him 8th until he shows otherwise. I would also sit him against lefties with Morales at first and Pinto as DH.
  8. I think the Twins agree with you about catcher defense. I don't agree about Harper. He only threw out 22% of runners in the 1991 season and prior to that it had been in the 30s. That got some notice with the team in the news. The most important part of what a catcher does is receive the ball and call the games. One thing that usually stands out over time for catchers that lack in this skill is poorer K/BB ratios relative to the team. I believe the k/bb ratio with Brian Harper catching was better than the team average in each if his seasons.
  9. This is Pinto's 9th year in the organization. In the first 8, hopefully they will have assessed his defense skills. If there were significant concerns they should have been addressed in the first 8. Going to Rochester might help him fix a recently developed mechanical flaw and shake some rust, it won't develop a skill if it isn't there. Getting at bats in a Rochester will also help, but it won't help him adjust to major league pitching. The Twins are going for it this year. They can't go for it and develop struggling young players. Teams can't do both well. With no one running away in the central it makes some sense. In order to help the 2014 Twins, they need to send Pinto (and Hicks) down. It won't help their long term development. They need to send them down so they get regular at bats and time on the field as they wait to be called on when an injury occurs.
  10. It is hard to be confident that 4 is enough.
  11. He has always performed much worse with runners on base. In relief, he would be best in a role where he starts an inning. That us assuming he has an arm that can recover quickly to be useful in any relief role. I don't see the fit.
  12. It is not possible to be ready to pitch consistently in the major leagues by pitching to AAA hitters. That may take 50 major league starts following successful accomplishment of AAA. It also is not possible to look at AAA data beyond the basic rate numbers (K, BB, GB, FB) in support of an argument over who should be called up. I do hope May and Meyer will start their major league adjustment soon. I expect struggle and would not be surprised if they performed similarly to Gibson's 2013.
  13. I have 37 starts and 18 at catcher in 62 games. I guess those pinch hitting games is where the 70% comes from. That doesn't seem like consistent play. I also am hopeful that we have leaders that understand small sample size is not predictive and a week of poor numbers is not an indicator about the next week. After May 8 he started 7 of the next 21 games in May. Should it be surprising that he didn't hit as well? This is is not how a team develops a young player. The Twins are trying to win. Fine. Then win.
  14. Suzuki was signed to be the starter. The Twins may have based that on his 66 second half at bats. Playing Pinto regularly as a catcher or DH was not in the plan I fully expect the Twins to make the huge mistake of extending Suzuki into his 30s. He has a poor arm. His well below average framing numbers have stayed about the same except that he now ranks virtually on the bottom starting catchers. http://www.statcorner.com/CatcherReport.php I don't think his skill has declined. Other teams stopped catching the guys that used to be regularly below him. Doumit, Buck, Montero, Santana and Napoli aren't catching very much any more. A few other younger guys like Perez have improved. At the end of this year, the Twins will be no closer to solving the catcher position than they were at the beginning.
  15. It is clear the team goal is winning this year. Failure to meet that goal must lead to changes in the front office and coaching staff.
  16. Josmil Pinto will be the next young player Ron Gardenhire starts exposing in his press conferences. Look at his use this year. What young catcher could have been successful with the way Pinto has been used? Why take your developing catcher and use him primarily with a pitcher who is among the most difficult to catch in the majors? How can you work on your technique when catching Sam Deduno is different than catching any other pitcher? The Twins have a veteran in Suzuki that should be working with Deduno. Gardenhire wouldn't do that to a veteran. He isn't hitting recently. Playing twice a week, what else can you expect from a young player? He needs consistent at bats Gardenhire set up Pinto for failure and now I expect him to o start implying that he needs to go down and work. The front office has provided Gardenhire with the veterans he loves. They have used a franchise record number of players in their 30s. The team needs to respond with wins this year.
  17. Sign him. Put him in the Midwest League. Give Nick Burdi the opportunity to dominate. That is more aggressive than the Braves were with Kimbrel. He pitched three levels his first year but started in the Appalachian League. Paco Rodriguez made it to the majors in the year he was drafted. He started in the Midwest League.
  18. I don't think Arizona is giving up on him. They need to pass him through waivers to get him to AAA and have a chance to work through his struggle. He is willing to go. They are risking someone will claim him. That team would be responsible for about 17 million through 2015 plus a buyout. That team would also need to keep him in the majors.
  19. The Twins are using a Guerrier in mostly low leverage situations. While he is not going to hurt them there, I would rather invest those low leverage innings into a younger pitcher like Tonkin.
  20. I have seen and heard a different explanation of the 25 million average per year increase and what it means when comparing 2013 and 2014. One link http://www.royalsreview.com/2014/2/19/5423414/mellinger-on-the-royals-finances I am not sure which is correct. If teams received the same fixed amount in each year of the previous contract and will receive the same fixed amount each year for the next 8 years of the new contract then it is a 25 million dollar change from 2013-2014. If both of the contracts have built in year to year increases and it is a difference in average per year, then the change from 2013 to 2014 would be significantly smaller than 25 million. The year 2021 would be around 25 million more than 2013 and the year 2014 would be around 25 million more than 2006 assuming the contracts were the same duration. In either case, the Twins can absolutely afford Morales. That is not in dispute.
  21. I think the math on the 25 million increase is misleading. I believe it is the average of the old deal over several years compared to the average of the new deal over several years. Each deal increased annually so 2013 was the top end of the previous and 2014 is the bottom of the current. The actual amount might be in the 5-10 million range before mlb takes their cut.
  22. To the above list I would add Rosario. I would not want to buy the further decline of Willingham or Morales and continue to extend the cycle of mediocrity.
  23. For some reason I like this move. I can't imagine it has more than a 1 win impact. I know that they could have filled the spot with a third catcher and played Pinto regularly. I know this means Willingham is stuck in LF. He will wear down and his performance will drop possibly costing the win they gained. I know Morales will be elsewhere next year and really won't be very marketable this year. I know you don't rebuild by fielding your oldest team in the last two decades. Morales adds to the record number of players in their 30s the Twins have used this year. ... and I still like the move when it goes against reason. Intellectually, it makes so much more sense to build the next winning team. As a regular viewer and listener, I seem to care more about the ever so small increase in likelihood that they will win the next game.
  24. i am aware of Gardenhire's reasoning. Is it reasonable?
