  1. I think he will eventually be released. However, anytime I advocate for a multi year contract I do so realizing a team with Minnesota’s market will be very reluctant to toss away year’s of that deal. If the player declines suddenly we will be stuck with him. They have 3 good seasons for the 13 years they gave Santana, Hughes and Nolasco. That isn’t a recipe for success.
  2. Rotating through the end of the bullpen with options and AAAA pitchers is reasonably typical practice for competeting teams. The Yankees certainly lengthen their bullpen with this practice. It fixes a short term need while doing little for the long term. Where is the Twins focus? Should it shift towards the long term? The middling short term signings kind of make it appear that they want to focus on both. They aren’t doing it both well thus far this season.
  3. Is there data on how often Twin pitchers are throwing first pitch fastballs? The Reds were jumping all over those fastballs. I am not sure Hughes has any useful pitch but he was getting killed on early fastballs. Duffey’s rate of throwing fastballs is way up in his short stint this year at the expense of his curve ball. Maybe he needs to reverse and throw his off speed and breaking stuff first. Neither of these pitchers should be consistently throwing fastballs early in the count. On the other hand, Hildenberger’s most successful pitch last year was his fastball. Why is his fastball usage way down this year?
  4. I am sending out a reliever. If forced to pick I have to go with the younger player who has the longer track record. The older guy has options.
  5. I was wondering what the thoughts were about the Hughes extension at the time of the signing. I think this is the most critical comment.
  6. Does he need to be on the 40? If not, of course they keep him. The Angels can’t afford to stash a rule 5 when they are trying to compete. Minnesota might follow their lead.
  7. Tommy Pham had an .840 OPS in AAA first arriving there at 25. LaMarre has a .726 OPS in AAA. The 12 plate appearances are meaningless and should not be part of your argument. They don’t predict the next 12 plate appearances. Your comment about making the roster is meaningful and persuasive. If we have to look at LaMarre’s collective data, there is nothing to support he will be successful. There was evidence in Pham’s minor league career that he could hit. So we can’t look at numbers but he is on the roster for a reason and is getting a chance today.
  8. I am not sure we need a third catcher either. We did need someone to bat for Castro late in the game yesterday. If Molitor is more willing to do that with a third catcher, it might be more valuable to have a third catcher than a 13th pitcher.
  9. If we are going to judge by numbers, we can start using slash stats at around a full season of plate appearances. We can look at strike out rates, walk rates and ISO at around a quarter season of regular play. Are you asking for to get an opportunity to the point where the sample is meaningful?
  10. The Twins have 13 pitchers and 9 relievers with Busenitz replacing Buxton on the roster. It doesn’t seem that the roster construction is best meeting their needs. The Twins now need a fifth starter. They will call up Hughes to be the 5th starter. It would really help to have a reliever that could go 3+ innings. They can get by with 7 relievers if someone could go long. Duffey is the best pitcher for this job unless Mejia is ready to start and Hughes goes into this role. It would really help to have a right handed bench bat. They have Garver but Molitor won’t use him even to pinch hit for Castro last night. Give Molitor a third catcher and go with 12 pitchers. If they call up Astudillo, he will have options and be able to shuttle back and forth. Would calling up Hughes, Duffey and Astudillo for Kinley, Moya and Hildenberger give them more flexibility on the roster? If these moves were to be made, I would make only the Hughes move this weekend. He might have a short start and they can throw two of the relievers that are being removed so they have a fresh pen for New York.
  11. I don’t know if Kinley should be in the major leagues. I do know he is 27. This isn’t a case where you take a rule 5 pitcher and stash him in the back of the pen with hopes for the future as they did with Ryan Pressly at 24. At 27, he needs to produce now. He needs to be used now. I don’t know if Luke Bard (also 27) will be a good reliever. The Angels are using him regularly to mixed results. If you draft a 27 year old in the rule 5, you do so because you believe he can help in the current season. Use him or lose him.
  12. Turns out it was a horribly bad decision. I wonder if it was viewed that way at the time.
  13. That extension doesn’t look good now but I don’t recall thinking it was a bad idea then. Part of the risk for a mid market team is that it isn’t reasonable to throw away these sunk costs. They committed 13 years to Hughes, Santana and Nolasco and have a good return on 3 of those 10 years thus far. That is not a recipe for success.
  14. Hughes didn’t pitch yesterday. I wonder if he will be the 5th starter and pitch as soon as Sunday. Mejia starts today so he could go the 24th if he doesn’t have a high pitch count today. Looks like Hughes this time. I don’t know how much longer he can rehab.
  15. Teams can back date three days.
  16. It seems like Mejia was going to get the shot on Friday until the game was postponed.
  17. I am glad that they weren’t influenced by Hughes’ contract in the decision. I also hope that Hughes pitches well and makes a contribution to the team this year.
  18. How many do they need? Does it compare unfavorably with other teams? The 4th bench player has options and can be moved for a 13th pitcher. Moya and if necessary Hildenberger have options and can be flipped if the bullpen is overworked. I think he have the necessary flexibility.
  19. I think it was Mejia up yesterday. It would be great if Hughes has his velocity around 92 to win the opportunity. It doesn’t seem like the money mattered yesterday.
  20. According to JAWs, Joe is the 7th ranked catcher and Ernie is the 7th ranked SS.
  21. I I think they will treat him like Ernie Banks who is in as a SS though he only had 45% of his PA as a SS and more as a 1B. He was a great SS through age 30 winning both his MVPs. 80% of his WAR came through age 30. Banks was a HOF SS and mostly a below average 1B the second half of his career. I have no doubt that Joe Mauer will be in the HOF.
  22. There is value in having that option. The bench and the bullpen should be fluid. Good management and depth can make it effectively a roster of 27 or more.
  23. Are you arguing this is how you expect HOF voters to look at his career or is this how you personally look at his career? I have to believe most voters will see him as a catcher for those 10 years and understand the significance. There will always be critics but a solid majority will get him elected to the HOF.
  24. Joe Mauer was a catcher through 2013. In every one of those years he had the wear and tear of catching. It is hard to imagine that he is close to matching his plate appearance in seasons since. It can’t even be close. It would not make sense to split out any DH/PH/1B at bats from his seasons as a catcher but maybe that was what was done. He was still catching a lot of games in those years which would be tough on the body,
  25. Was it Mejia and not Hughes in town to start today? He was scheduled for Rochester who went with a bullpen game today instead.
