  1. We will have the first pitching coach on injured reserve from drawing too many circles.
  2. Latter I'm with you on that. My first name is spelled right about half the time (multiple versions). My middle name is Harl, which people always want to change to Carl or Harold or something else that's normal (no Harald yet, though.) My last name ends in ad, which is frequently changed to ead. I hope my spelling trespasses are forgiven as freely as I have forgiven (which has been completely and without reservation.) I also wish I could say the same about my forgiveness in all other areas of my life, but some still give me trouble (such as the the JJ Hardy trade (Jim #^&$!@ Hoey))
  3. Just spending isn't good enough. Who would you sign? How much would you be willing to spend? No team can afford to spend money for the sake of spending. The contest is about efficient and effective use of limited resources. I know the saying goes "You have to spend money to make money," but it's not completely accurate. You have to spend money wisely to make money. Even the Yankees can't afford to throw away too much money without hurting their ability to compete. Would you sign Max Sherzer? Would you sign him for 7 years/$200M, or whatever crazy figure it will take? Would you trade Buxton for whoever the Shields equivalent on the market is today? The Royals have some things they did that are worth imitating - especially paying attention to OF defense - but sneaking into the wild card and getting hot in October isn't a repeatable strategy. Maybe they knew something about will Myers (and Wade Davis) that nobody else could see, or maybe they got lucky. They did have a number of former top prospects who they believed were on the cusp of putting it all together, so they went for it. Are the Twins there right now? i'm going to leave that as an open-ended "maybe" right now, because I have to go. Just know that if the Twins go for it now and fail, it will be disastrous. KC almost did that, and they still have to pay the piper this off-season, although with the post-season run they made, they might be able to afford it.
  4. Today I learned that there are two r's in Chris Herrmann's last name. I remember being proud of myself for remembering the second n, but now I see it wasted. I'm blaming his father (or grandfather or great-grandfather) - I was spelling it right, darn it. (I may or may not have misspelled Parmelee's name for a while, too.) I hope I'm still allowed to be mad about the JJ Hardy trade, because I'm not ready to let it go yet. (Jim #^&$!@ Hoey. )
  5. Just throwing something out there to see if there is anything to it - is it possible the disruption of the previous two years had more of an impact on pitchers? Nobody pitched 200 innings in 1994, and in 1995 there was the shortened spring training. Then in 1996 everyone was back to the full schedule. I'm not sure how we would test that - DL rates, maybe? Attrition rates? Were there a large number of pitchers who continued to pitch for a while but were never the same after the strike? I think we're really fighting Occam's razor on this one, though, because 1996 is right in the middle of the steroid era, and the whole generation is suspect. (Even Andy Pettitte used them?) My understanding of the way steroids work is they allow shorter recovery times between workouts, so they allow more workouts. Maybe someone can follow that type of routine for a limited time without steroids. Maybe Steinbach was working out with one of the users - there was no shortage of them. But that's one maybe too many. The simple answer is maybe he was juicing. Even if he wasn't, it was so prevalent that there's no way he knew nothing. If he knew something and did nothing, he's an accomplice.
  6. Thanks for your interest in the manager position, but we have decided to move in a different direction. Jim Pohlad asked to keep a copy of your resume on file in case he has any other openings you might be qualified for. I'm not sure what that might be, but he seems to have something in mind that he won't tell me about. - T.R.
  7. I am of the opinion that tangibles matter more. Being on great A-ball teams doesn't change the fact that it's tough to overcome a 25% K rate. RBI totals are greatly influenced by opportunity. ABW is an interesting prospect, but he has some serious flaws in his game that could very well overshadow his strengths as he moves up.
  8. It does seem like I had more than 4 years worth of George Mitterwald and Phil Roof baseball cards. I guess 4 years was a lot longer back then. I agree 100% about Herr and Liriano. There are some career minor-leaguers/cup-o' coffee guys that I'd rank ahead of what Herr did for/to the Twins.
  9. I'm sure that depends on which birth certificate he shows.
  10. That's probably not going to get him the invite to spring training on the reunion tour. I'm pretty sure even Livan Hernandez could keep his ERA under 50 in the Mexican League. (I'm not so sure about Sidney Ponson.)
  11. The Real Deal is still playing pro ball???
  12. My first thought was "there's no way wind power could generate enough electricity to do all that" but then I saw Dozier's hairdryer wasn't included in that, so we're good.
  13. If Ozzie gets the job I'm leading the campaign to get him fired from day 1. I'd rather have THE Ozzie and manager than that clown that used to manage the White Sox. Don't make that call, Terry.
  14. Payroll spiked precipitously with the move to Target Field. It went up more in 2011 when they went for it and failed miserably. In 2012 and 2013 they cut payroll because they were in the process of blowing the thing up to rebuild. In 2014 they started spending again. It didn't get them far because a few key pieces under-performed. This year I expect them add at least one solid free agent (two would be nice) - not elite, but in the Hughes or Nolasco payroll range (and hopefully in the Hughes performance range). If the under-performers bounce back, they could compete I disagree. The only financial benefit i see is it might help make the team better which might sell more tickets.
  15. If he was a bandwagon critic he probably wouldn't have been commenting on the Twins firing a manager who had lost 90 games 4 years in a row. I don't like his politics and I think he sometimes (OK, frequently) says outrageous things just to be outrageous, but he's been around sports long enough to know a thing or two. (I can't believe I'm defending Olbermann.)
  16. Hopefully he won't be the big off-season signing/new left fielder, either.
  17. I thought he was out to lunch on the Twins marketing department, too. It was one innocuous question mixed in among many.
  18. I don't see it. Managers get fired all the time who deserve it less than Gardy. It wasn't like they handled it in a callous manner (like the Astros did, or like the Braves did with their GM). Gardy and TR even did the press conference together. Change is hard, especially in an organization that has had very little of it. It was time.
  19. Dougie might have had some of the "outside the organization" rub off on him while he was with the Red Sox. "No to Ozzie" isn't nearly strong enough.
  20. Junior high, high school, whatever. It sounds like you're already out.
  21. I would add that the tendency to make the back-up the personal catcher for somebody can skew the data if that somebody is horrible at holding runners on. Wasn't Pinto catching Deduno early in the year?
  22. Or you could get her a screen name ...
  23. Four 90+ loss seasons were bad enough. What would four 180+ loss seasons have been like? How empty would Target Field have been on Christmas Eve? Two fans? (Seth - who would be there with you?) Would there even be enough players showing up?
  24. Just a tune-up for us before the play-offs. The Tigers are just playing out the string and look like they have quit for the year. Oh, wait...
