  1. You should get him to kick in $25K ($50K?) to cover the posting fee. That was great about the Johan Santana trade - the Twins got him for free since the team they traded with (Astros?) paid the posting fee. Maybe your guy will win a couple of Cy Young awards too.
  2. 0 PA, 69 PA, and .577 OPS. Two propects of some sort and we know Florimon.
  3. My understanding is that when there is a grey area in a CBA, it is normally interpreted narrowly in a way that favors the side that didn't add the language. It's assumed that the side protected by the clause is the one that added it. In this case, the owners would have added the clause that allowed them toll the contract if a player was physically unable to perform for a certain amount of time. As the Bengals found out with A.J. McCarron, being physically unable to perform is not necessarily the same as being on the PUP list. Bridgewater (and/or his agent) had already had already said he was able to play at some point before he came off the PUP. It sounds like the Vikings saw the writing on the wall and decided not to pursue that fight, either to avoid alienating Teddy or because they just weren't all that interested in bringing him back. (I'm guessing it's the former.)
  4. And I thought I was irrationally optimistic. In 2014, Hughes was better than he ever had been before and better than he has been since. If he can get back to 75% of that, he could still be useful, but I would still give long odds against even that happening for any extended period of time.
  5. The Ramos trade was Bill Smith, wasn't it? (The Ryan-Smith-Ryan era all does seem to run together, I guess.)
  6. Is that the right movie, or did they let Chargois go because he has an ugly girlfriend? (No confidence.)
  7. Liriano just signed for $4M + incentives (another likely $1M). I would have preferred that to 3-4 years of Lynn.
  8. Go with your first instinct - not tough at all. It's an excellent article, but the headline really detracts. Plus, Cody isn't a fragile newbie blogger; he can handle the truth. That was the perfect response.
  9. I'm more optimistic about Gibson than I ever have been in the past. That may be a bit of damning with faint praise, but I also think he might have made some changes that can lead to sustained success. That bit about the slider is encouraging as well. Hopefully he doesn't forget how to do everything that works like he and Buxton seem to do in the off-season.
  10. I have always liked him and wouldn't object. Take a mulligan - sign him and release Sanchez.
  11. If they get 4/60 that would probably be better the 17 now and betting on 3/43 or more at age 32. I'm not sure where you would draw the line. Would 4/50 be better? 3/42? A pitching arm is a fragile commodity and I'm sure there is a desire to lock in as much total compensation as possible, and players will likely accept a lower AAV if they can lock in enough years.
  12. So there's hope - maybe they will notice that the right arm hasn't been attached to the body for the past 3 years
  13. I agree on the Lackey thing, although I can't remember why.
  14. To paraphrase the horrible old song, if that's wrong, I don't want to be right.
  15. I've heard Nuke as a verb, but definitely not Lalooshing.
  16. Apparently we passed on the rowboat, motorboat and helicopter and will be waiting for a couple of the young guys to become Cy Young candidates.
  17. He didn't ditch the Twins for A&M yet (unless I missed something), so he still could flip the switch and turn into a pitcher.
  18. I had forgotten that. You're now in charge of the grudge department around here. (I don't want to sign him because I don't think he's any good anymore.)
  19. It was really only one colossal thread, and it was AWESOME! None of the Darvish threads will hold a candle to that one until they hit as least 500 posts.
  20. There are some subtleties, like slight turns of the body or the wrist on certain pitches, or not rising up too high to catch a pitch near the letters. But for the most part it's just difficult to actually do it at a top level while also worrying about so many other things. There always were guys who had the reputation as being good receivers. What's new is the attempt to actually quantify the advantage (or disadvantage, depending on the catcher.)
  21. I don't remember too many people being OK with Correia, and I remember a lot of people being upset about the Twins wasting a roster spot and $10M or so on a replacement-level pitcher.
  22. What would your answer be if it was Cobb/Lynn at 4/$48M + $12M in achievable incentives (say, $3M/yr for 100+ innings)? My understanding is the $50M threshold to lose a draft pick only counts guaranteed money. When I read that, I was curious about the fine print to see how far the non-guaranteed envelope could be pushed. I could see some team offering pitcher like Darvish (except subject to the draft pick loss) offering a 5/$49M contract plus a $71M bonus (paid over 5 years) for throwing at least 1 pitch at any time during the contract.
  23. If he continues to play baseball, they still have the exclusive rights they paid for. If he met the terms of the contract, he owes the Twins nothing morally. If he stays and makes the team and wins a Cy Young as a rookie this year, with the Twins pay him like the best pitcher in baseball next year, or will they pay him like a 2nd-year player who has almost no leverage? I suppose they might sign him to a long-term contract with some money in exchange for more years of control, but we don't call the pre-arb players "serfs" for nothing. Right now he's at the less-than-serf stage. If he decides this isn't working and he wants to get on with his life, he is free to do so, free of charge. Edit - I know my post may be piling on, but I think you're far enough of base on this to add to the pile. Normally I either agree with you or at least can see your side, but I'm missing it this time.
