But this isn’t just a Rocco thing. This is the modern-day baseball thing. If not Rocco, it would be someone else doing the exact same thing. You and everyone who doesn’t like how the sport is going these days seems to have put this dislike in the man. While I agree that hate is a strong word, and as I said, not one I’d use here, I a,so think this massive dislike toward Rocco is also misguided and a tad irrational.

The thing that always kind of annoys me is what was mentioned in nick’s article … the attitude that Rocco is to blame for the losses, but no credit is given for the wins. While hate is a strong word and not one I’d use here, it would seem to me that the blame/no credit process is about disliking the manager no matter what. If the manager is the only one responsible for the losses, they are responsible for the wins, too. But I don’t really think either is true. I’ve often said that I don’t think the manager affects the outcome all that much. Players who can execute and getting players who can execute … that’s on the players themselves and the FO for assembling the team. The manager today relies on a committee of people to come up with a game plan. This committee does a very good job, from what I can see, at making sure that the players are prepared with that plan. The players then need to execute that plan.

I'm older than you and have been a Twins fan since the mid-60s. My recipe for winning is to score more than the other team, however you manage it. Some days you'll score a lot of runs and win; some days you won't score many but the pitching was great, so you still win. Winning is what matters to me. I don't care if they win scoring 1 run or 10. Just win. Again, I'm older than you.

Twins 4, A's 3: Bullpen Completes Sweep of Oakland
Squirrel replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Pagan … I don’t think he’s the closer. I don’t think we have one. It’s a traditional mindset that I think most teams are moving away from. But usage … yes, it makes me very nervous seeing Pagan warming in the 9th when the game is close. But it seems that’s all we’ve had is close games. Duran is young and somewhat new to relieving. (He’s a starter … has he been used in a relief role much in his development?) They aren’t going to use him every day. while I don’t know the reasons, I’m sure the Twins have lots of reasons why certain pitchers are being used in certain situations. Could some of this be a result of not having Alcala? Definitely, imo. As much as these close wins could have easily been lost, they weren’t.- 40 replies

I don’t know if this changes your argument or not, but Duran came into the game when the score was tied 3-3, then gave up two solo shots. Bringing him into the game in high leverage situations is the place to use Duran, imo, whether or not it’s the 9th. Maybe a tie game isn’t high leverage enough to have used him then, but I think an argument could be made that it was. I’m 50-50 on that one. But I don’t like using Pagan as he was last night, that we, and most of us, agree on. I just don’t think your example of when Duran was used the other night enhances this argument.

Oh come on, Mike. I’ve read a lot of your posts over the years, and you are way better than this. While I question the use of Pagan in these situations, they don’t put any of their players in any of their roles game to game, just to prove how good they are.

This isn’t a Rocco thing, never was. And it isn’t just an organizational thing, never was. This is an MLB-wide thing, always was. We can hate it, but this is how the game is being played everywhere.

Twins 7, Orioles 2: Twins stay hot behind Ryan, Bats
Squirrel replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Also, the season is young and Ryan is still a rookie. With the bp there, as you have stated, why risk it. The kid has been doing an impressive job, even through last night. While maybe not quite as sharp, this early in the season, there is no need to push it. Now, if this were August, I might think differently.- 42 replies

We questioned it long before then ... just sayin' ...

During the off-season, when FA starting pitchers were going off the market and it looked like we were going with trades, youngsters and/or reclamation projects, many of us were then focussed on, ‘Okay, then, they’d better get a stellar defense in place.’ While the pitching has been so much better than expected, not enough can be said of the defense. That play of Correa’s last night, and Urshela’s the night before … wow. Even the pitchers, in interviews, have commented how much a boost it is to them to have that defense behind them. While Correa’s bat needs to finally show itself, his defense is a difference maker. And I thought we were going to miss Donaldson. As much as I was upset they traded him, and as much as I like Donaldson as a player, I’m saying to myself, ‘Donaldson who?’ Defense matters … right, @nicksaviking? ??
