  2. There was the scene where the two male characters were at a football game and in the batting cages. I actually just watched this recently.
  3. It's not the first time ... but I think Van has been the only one to seek advice here. Or has Aggies also asked for advice?
  4. Just be yourself. If he doesn't like you for you, he never will. But note that parents have this thing about their daughters ... no one is really, truly good enough. There, that should settle your nerves.
  5. omg ... I guess we had to think it was coming ... but wow ... still NEWS! The whole thing is just collapsing ...
  6. I'm using these two quotes to give a moderator warning to EVERYONE. Please, for the 783,432nd time ... STOP BROADLY CHARACTERIZING OTHER POSTERS WHEN THEY DISAGREE WITH YOU. No one is complaining, and no one is applauding. If you can't have a discussion or disagree, even passionately, without going there, name calling and characterizing posters like this, then stop and walk away.
  7. Is this why we eat chicken dinners when they win? And are you then suggesting we should be eating eggs if they lose?
  8. Have you read any of the articles I posted? For me it's even more troubling that these are from post war eras because of the specifics that they symbolize. It's as if no lessons were ever learned and there was no acknowledgement of the wrongs committed and gives license for these attitudes to continue to exist because those that want this to thrive rally around these things. These statues were erected, specifically, in the heights of Jim Crow to make sure that black people 'knew their place' and to emphasize white supremacy. There is no mistaking that. If there are those who don't see it that way, and have adopted alternate ideas of what these things symbolize, they are just wrong and likely do not know the proper history or context. And I don't think the statues can or should stay just because some either forgot or never learned their history or come up with the reasons such as 'Well, they're okay because that's not what I personally see in them.' For me that's really akin to saying, 'Well, I'm not racist so this isn't about me.' I can't say it plainer. If the only thing these statues represent is 'We are southern' and nothing more, that's really quite lazy and why nazi and white supremacist groups are able to exist. None of these statues should be on pedestals surrounded by beautiful parks because that is NOT what they are.
  9. I'm using this post to step in here with a moderator note. Please start another thread, in the ML forum, if you want to have this discussion about Sano. This is not the thread for it. Please keep on topic.
  10. Here is a good, very basic, article with timeline: http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2017/08/the-real-story-of-all-those-confederate-statues/ "No one should think that these statues were meant to be somber postbellum reminders of a brutal war. They were built much later, and most of them were explicitly created to accompany organized and violent efforts to subdue blacks and maintain white supremacy in the South. I wouldn’t be surprised if even a lot of Southerners don’t really understand this, but they should learn. There’s a reason blacks consider these statues to be symbols of bigotry and terror. It’s because they are."
  11. That was a pretty random meeting! Did you have a Twins hat on or something and she commented?
  12. Just to be clear, when I talk of historical accuracy, this is what I'm referring to.
  13. Yes ... you should read the article I posted about this a few posts ago.
  14. Perhaps. And maybe what these statues once stood for has been forgotten as generations pass. It still doesn't change why they are there. They were erected by a past generation to remind whites and blacks of white supremacy. To me it doesn't matter how they are viewed today because why they are there in the first place is ugly. Again, the historical accuracy matters. They do not represent Southern pride even if some have adopted them to mean as much. But what we witnessed, it is clear that Southern pride is NOT what those statues mean to the groups of Nazis, white supremacists and white nationalists who descended on Charlottesville last weekend. And that level of vileness and hate should not be protected under any circumstances.
  15. Thank you.
  16. Here's something to consider about remembering/preserving an ugly history: "Often the argument for preserving Confederate statues and allowing Confederate flags is that we should not forget our history. In Germany, Nazi buildings are extremely hard to come by — nearly all have been destroyed. Yet Germany certainly has not forgotten anything: There's just a recognition that remembering and memorializing are two different things." http://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2017/08/16/543808019/the-view-of-charlottesville-from-berlin?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=npr&utm_term=nprnews&utm_content=20170816 And I don't think it's up to white supremacists from all over the country to descend on a community that they don't even live in and insist the statue stay ... that isn't free speech, imo, and I don't think these people should be allowed to hide behind it anymore when what they espouse is absolutely contradictory to what America stands for.
  17. There's a difference between disagreeing with and disliking the message and one that incites hate and violence and that is just wrong, and incites an ideology that seeks to not only discriminate but to remove sectors of the population by any means for not being white. I'm not sure how far, exactly, free speech protects their message. And, it doesn't mean that they are free from consequence. And I find this issue very different from the issues of genuine human struggle, white or black. And these statues don't 'honor' the confederacy, if you understand their history ... and I'm not sure why we need to 'honor' the confederacy in the first place. We are still fighting that war ... the confederacy is DEAD and needs to remain so. People who want to 'honor' the confederacy do so because they want a tiered system that is not of equality. If you want these statues to exist, then put them in a properly contextualized surrounding with historical accuracy of how these statues represent the height of Jim Crow, of why the war was fought and what it represented, and not on pedestals surrounded by pretty parks and flowers. These are not some 'glory days' here that should be or need to be honored. I'm not suggesting removing them from our history, because they are part of the ugly side of it, but historical accuracy as to what they represent should be the story.
  18. In other words ... evil.
  19. You can't get in at all? Or can't send anything? Make sure you aren't at capacity. But if it's anything else, yeah, Brock issue.
  20. It's only a jinx if I ate it before the game. Am hoping to have a late night chicken dinner.
